So we were just wandering around downstairs on the floor because we always got there early. The lights went down and no one was particularly rushing to get to the front...until the lights came up.  The music started and when I saw Prince I practically RAN to the front of the stage. I didn't move until he was done. I think I was in a state of shock. His entire act was much more polished by Controversy, and he had clearly gotten a lot better - even freakier, but in a different way: More cosmic & surreal. Although he was still relatively unknown by the mass media, I knew from the Controversy Tour that this guy wasn't going to stop until he took over the music business. In fact, my friend that I went to the show with and I joked after the concert; "Is there anything this guy CAN'T do?" I asked my friend "I wonder if he could do movies?", and we looked at each other at the same time and said "...well, we KNOW he can ACT!", lol. So no man, you caught  live at a good time in his career, your imagination can fill in the parts that came before, lol. I had a chance to see P when he played The Roxy right before he was added to the opening slot for Rick but by the time I went to get tickets, they were all gone. I remember thinking that I had time to get a ticket cuz for some reason, I wasn't thinking that it was going to sell out right away...WRONG. When P played out here again on the DM tour, at a club called Flippers, I didn't even know about it untill they were giving tickets away on the radio. I was like "What?!" There was no advertisement that I saw before hand. Not the standard ads in the paper or local mags. And definately no word on the radio. I called up to Flippers and the lady there said to me "Oh honey, those tickets have BEEN gone!" I'll never forget that. I called the radio station like a fucking lunatic trying to get thorugh and then when I DID get through, I wasn't the right caller. You know, I had to be caller 50 or whatever the hell. Man, we have been living such parallel lives. I absolutely remember when he was playing Flippers! Flippers was this big roller disco on Santa Monica Blvd at La Cienega, which was later turned into an Espirit clothing store (I'm sure it's something completely different now). But that show WAS advertised, I believe in the L.A. Weekly. I remember that show because I had just moved to Los Angeles, and had just seen Prince opening for Rick James just a short time earlier in Charlotte, NC. Just having arrived in L.A., I saw the ad for Prince and I was like "OH SHIT! I gotta get to this show!", lol. But I had no idea where this "Flippers" was or how to get there. So I told my brother, who had already moved to L.A. a few years prior, all about this cat Prince I had just seen with Rick James. I asked my brother to come along with me and take me to go see Prince, and my brothers response was: "Man, I aint taking you to go see that Faggot!"  So needless to say, I missed THAT show, lol. Same as you, by the time he rolled around with the Controversy tour at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, I knew my way around well enough by then, and I WASN'T missing THAT show!
Years later, like in the early 90's, my brother finally came around and admitted: "I was wrong about Prince, I should have gone with you to see him at Flippers because I could have witnessed history in the making". Today, my brother has been buying Prince since "Musicology" and thinks he's a legend. Should've listened to his little brother, lol. | |

That was a big draw for me as well. Because growing up, I didn't follow only the soul/funk groups of the day, I was tripping on Bowie, Elton John, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, George Harrison, Janis Joplin, and all that; basically living my own little hippy-dippy peace & love-powered existence, lol. And I recognized early that Prince was playing around with all those vibes. | |

Yeah that James Brown Mike vs Prince clip was on youtube for a while too I thought it was total rock star that Chick carried Prince to the stage It was funny how you see Mike instigate the battle telling James that Prince was in the audience and to call him up Right, that clip were Prince got up on the stage and play a musical instrument and Michael Jackson got up on the stage and...dance. We were talking about Chick carrying Prince around at a Rick James show as to what Rick felt was an attempt to upstage him. The topic is not about what P and MJ did when they were on stage with James. I made a comment about that, as a fan of P's, I thought it was weird that P rode on Chick's back to the stage. I thought it then when I first heard the dj's talking about it the day after the show. Then when I finally got the footage, I saw it for myself and STILL thought it was weird. I actually thought that when I saw Chick carrying P. Yeah, I too thought it was crazy looking Michael carrying Webster at the award show. I was like "Damn Michael, you have a date with Brooke Shields. She's there with you...Ditch that little motherfucker and concentrate on Brooke's fine ass." That's what I actually thought when I saw Michael with Emmanuel. Kid or no kid. It looked strangely fucked up. Has NOTHING to do with if Michael danced on stage with James and P played some guitar, danced and then knocked a lamp post prop into the crowd and shit. At the end of the day, P's grown ass looked weird having Chick carrying him to the stage. As acrobatic as P was, he didn't even need to get a running start...He could have just leaped on stage. Man, we have been living such parallel lives. I absolutely remember when he was playing Flippers! Flippers was this big roller disco on Santa Monica Blvd at La Cienega, which was later turned into an Espirit clothing store (I'm sure it's something completely different now). But that show WAS advertised, I believe in the L.A. Weekly. I remember that show because I had just moved to Los Angeles, and had just seen Prince opening for Rick James just a short time earlier in Charlotte, NC. Just having arrived in L.A., I saw the ad for Prince and I was like "OH SHIT! I gotta get to this show!", lol. But I had no idea where this "Flippers" was or how to get there. So I told my brother, who had already moved to L.A. a few years prior, all about this cat Prince I had just seen with Rick James. I asked my brother to come along with me and take me to go see Prince, and my brothers response was: "Man, I aint taking you to go see that Faggot!" So needless to say, I missed THAT show, lol. Same as you, by the time he rolled around with the Controversy tour at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, I knew my way around well enough by then, and I WASN'T missing THAT show!
Years later, like in the early 90's, my brother finally came around and admitted: "I was wrong about Prince, I should have gone with you to see him at Flippers because I could have witnessed history in the making". Today, my brother has been buying Prince since "Musicology" and thinks he's a legend. Should've listened to his little brother, lol. I was reading L.A. Weekly back then as well. Also the music paper BAM where I thought for sure they would have had an ad in there. I had actually been to Flippers to skate. Some of my school friends in grade school used to go. I meant to tell you I finally found and confirmed the actual date of the show you went to. I had to drive down there (Greenville) and spend some time at the city library digging in digital files to find it, was not easy. But at least now you, and we know for sure it did happen and when. The current concert list (that xeno pasted to this thread) for the Fire It Up tour is very accurate now. But there is a good chance that there are dates not known for it that haven't been documented. I only wish that more people that went to those particular shows would write in on threads like this one with details as to where and when exactly they saw the show. It would certainly help us in trying to get evidence and document accurately the shows for Prince history sake. Our work on the Dirty Mind, Controvery, and 1999 tours evidence search still continues to this day. [Edited 6/5/09 8:52am] | |
