Just to be clear, and to prevent any false rumors from getting started, although at certain points of his performance he was indeed completely naked after snatching his panties down, he wasn't "fully exposed", as he kept his hand over his penis while gyrating toward the audience. Though it's worth noting that immediately prior to this, dancing around in his sweaty panties wasn't leaving a whole lot to the imagination in the first place, lol. Particularly during the numerous times he kept sliding down that stripper pole that he used to work repeatedly during his performance. the POLE...he had it on various tours including Musicology... rather sad now to see it go unworked

As I was always interested with *The dirty mind/controversy era *The prince vs rick james topic * prince's wild and lewd antics in the "early years" Thankz to oldfreinds4sale and rinluv for the reply's.... He claimed it was his idea. Anyway the P-Dog post backeds up what older people told me who went to these shows that P was kicking Rick's ass. In addtion, I have a tape from the Houston 81 show that just kills. Everytime I listen to it I think how Rick was pretty much done when P came along. I also have the show from Houston 81 and yeah, by that stage, P was a LOT more polished as a performer than he was on the Dirty Mind tour. At least from the shows that I have from the DM tour. The feedback that I got from the people that I know that went to the tour with P and Rick, they said that the bruthas in the crowd could not get with P and the way he was dressed and the way he acted. And that either some of the bruthas actually walked out while P was on stage and came back when Rick came on or they jeered and heckled P. ----- What you say about the brothers might be true but lucky for Prince brothers were not buying the bulk of the records back then. Let's be honest if it were not for the ladies P would not still be around.

That's an excellent analogy!) Yes, I believe I was at the same show you were at for his Controversy Tour: The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. But no... Prince blew me away on the Controversy tour! As awesome as the first tour was, I always thought in the back of my mind "This guy is crazy talented, the only thing he's missing is some stage props". (...because Rick and George Clinton were killing you with Space Ships and 12-foot smoking joints & shit, lol) At the Controversy Tour... HE GAVE YOU STAGE PROPS! lol. His entire act was much more polished by Controversy, and he had clearly gotten a lot better - even freakier, but in a different way: More cosmic & surreal. Although he was still relatively unknown by the mass media, I knew from the Controversy Tour that this guy wasn't going to stop until he took over the music business. In fact, my friend that I went to the show with and I joked after the concert; "Is there anything this guy CAN'T do?" I asked my friend "I wonder if he could do movies?", and we looked at each other at the same time and said "...well, we KNOW he can ACT!", lol. So no man, you caught ![]() ![]() ![]()

Very much like Bowie had in the 70's. As a kid who were into all of those cats, I was blown away that I saw P evoke all of that at the same time as adding his own thing to it.
That was a big draw for me as well. Because growing up, I didn't follow only the soul/funk groups of the day, I was tripping on Bowie, Elton John, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, George Harrison, Janis Joplin, and all that; basically living my own little hippy-dippy peace & love-powered existence, lol. And I recognized early that Prince was playing around with all those vibes. ![]()

But that over time, shit did start to get bad. Of course Dez said nothing of P stealing from Rick's show. I had always heard about P going to Rick's shows, trying to upstage him on stage by having Chick carry P on his shoulders through the crowd. When I first heard that, I thought that was the freakiest sounding shit. I wasn't sure if I believed it untill I heard on the radio that P was carried up on stage at the James Brown concert out here in 83. The dj's on 1580 KDAY were talking about it the next day on the radio because 2 of the dj's went to the show. They were saying how cool it was that Michael got on stage and sung and danced. Then when P was coming to get on stage, Chick carried him up there. I was like "What the fuck is THAT shit? WHY on earth would P, who's a grown ass man, let another grown ass man carry him up on stage?!" I didn't know what to make of it. Then it years later when I finally got to see the footage of the James Brown show. Sure enough, there it was on tape. I was like "Gawt damn!" So I have no reason to doubt what Rick was saying about that. I could tell that P had taken a few things from Rick in his stage show. P just kept escalating as a performer and pretty soon he had sailed on by Rick.
Yeah that James Brown Mike vs Prince clip was on youtube for a while too I thought it was total rock star that Chick carried Prince to the stage It was funny how you see Mike instigate the battle telling James that Prince was in the audience and to call him up Right, that clip were Prince got up on the stage and play a musical instrument and Michael Jackson got up on the stage and...dance. Exactly. "I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"- MJ

Exactly. I wasn't comparing Prince to Michael Jackson. That's what YOU are doing. We were talking about Chick carrying Prince around at a Rick James show as to what Rick felt was an attempt to upstage him. The topic is not about what P and MJ did when they were on stage with James. I made a comment about that, as a fan of P's, I thought it was weird that P rode on Chick's back to the stage. I thought it then when I first heard the dj's talking about it the day after the show. Then when I finally got the footage, I saw it for myself and STILL thought it was weird. I actually thought that when I saw Chick carrying P. Yeah, I too thought it was crazy looking Michael carrying Webster at the award show. I was like "Damn Michael, you have a date with Brooke Shields. She's there with you...Ditch that little motherfucker and concentrate on Brooke's fine ass." That's what I actually thought when I saw Michael with Emmanuel. Kid or no kid. It looked strangely fucked up. Has NOTHING to do with if Michael danced on stage with James and P played some guitar, danced and then knocked a lamp post prop into the crowd and shit. At the end of the day, P's grown ass looked weird having Chick carrying him to the stage. As acrobatic as P was, he didn't even need to get a running start...He could have just leaped on stage. Today, my brother has been buying Prince since "Musicology" and thinks he's a legend. Should've listened to his little brother, lol. I was reading L.A. Weekly back then as well. Also the music paper BAM where I thought for sure they would have had an ad in there. I had actually been to Flippers to skate. Some of my school friends in grade school used to go. It was popular as hell back then. Depending on the time, u could see Cher skating there as well. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

blackguitaristz said: aarontj said: Right, that clip were Prince got up on the stage and play a musical instrument and Michael Jackson got up on the stage and...dance. I meant to tell you I finally found and confirmed the actual date of the show you went to. I had to drive down there (Greenville) and spend some time at the city library digging in digital files to find it, was not easy. But at least now you, and we know for sure it did happen and when. The current concert list (that xeno pasted to this thread) for the Fire It Up tour is very accurate now. But there is a good chance that there are dates not known for it that haven't been documented. I only wish that more people that went to those particular shows would write in on threads like this one with details as to where and when exactly they saw the show. It would certainly help us in trying to get evidence and document accurately the shows for Prince history sake. Our work on the Dirty Mind, Controvery, and 1999 tours evidence search still continues to this day. [Edited 6/5/09 8:52am]
