why do you say ona live didn't capture spirit of 2002 tour

prince released one nite alone live at the end of 2002.
some fans complained that it didn't capture what the ona live was about.
What does it bothers you on the ona live ?
audience level too low or did prince edit music in the studio by rerecording some parts ?
Sound of this album is amazing, great production, still one nite alone concert from LA WAS the brilliant and it could have been a better choice.

Personally for me it sounds a bit sterile although I do dig it out for a listen every now and then.

I would have much prefered if it had been one complete show rather than tracks taken from several shows, and I would go even further to say he should have used one of the European shows, the ones I've heard pissed on the US shows! (but that's just my opinion) biggrin

the audience level is too low and the song selection isn't all that.

he should have waited till he had finished the european and asian
leg of the tour.

it's not that the dvd or the album are really bad, they're ok but
the audience levels are indeed too low and the mix is kind of flat.

the song selection on both is, as i sad kind of disappointing since
he played so many cool tracks on the rest of the tour that are not
included here including reworkings of something in the water etc...

the aftershow disc is another major let down imo. joy in repetition
is cool and so is the piano on dorothy parker but the rest is just
wasted space imo.

most people have heard the aftershows from NightTown, Bataclan and
Club Vega. to name but a few. some of the stuff that was played at
the soundchecks is amazing too (xenophobia/sweet baby mash up or
the jazzy don't play me, or the very funky long version of cool).

to do this tour right, i admit, a 3 disc package would be hard
pressed to achieve anything close to a true representation of how
awesome the tour was.

but if he had just glued different songs from all over the world
into one kick ass 3 cd set (2 for a main show, 1 for pre and post
show gigs) it could have included highlights such as empty room,
all the critics love you, the ladder, calhoun sq, dolphin and
beautiful strange to name but a few.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Anxiety

it's okay. i think it's a bit over-edited, which i know is a reality for live recordings, but i think the wrong things were edited and i think the wrong things were left alone (for example, less crowd singing would have been nice, though maybe that's just my hang-up).

also, that was a very ranty tour. prince had a lot to say, a lot of "sermonizing" and a lot of stuff he was getting off his chest. not that i would have wanted spoken word stuff to dominate the live recording, but i would have liked a little more of it than we got, because to me that was one of the signature features of that tour, and a document of a few more of those rants would have been cool. again, that could just be my quirk. i like hearing prince go off on stuff, cuz it's so rare and refreshing to just hear him spout off, whether i agree with him or not.

Although I'm a bigger fan of the set than most around here, the thing that really frustrated me when I received it was how much space was still available to fill on the discs - from memory, there was more than an hour that could have been added between the 3 discs.

So many songs that we were crying out for could have been included on the 3 discs without losing anything that was already there.
