The Prince SuperBowl Performance vs Planet Earth

The thing that disappoints me most bout Planet Earth wasn't was that it was a bad album. Indeed, I disagree with folks who hate the album that it was even bad. Sure, it wasn't a great album, but certainly not a terrible effort. Rather, it was the wrong album at the wrong time. Specifically, it was the wrong album for Prince to have released in the shaddow of his recent, stellar, Superbowl performance.

You know when you get a blowjob from somebody and it's pretty good, but after a few minutes of slurping, deep throating, and wet happiness, the cock sucker shift gears on you and you end up having to jackoff or some shit to keep up momentum? That's what Planet earth did to the superbowl performance.

The Superbowl Performance didn't have the most clever or impressive collection of songs. But, being that it was the largest viewing audience Prince received at one time, if ever, it couldn't have been anything but what he performed. The vast majority of the audience were families and straight white males. All the songs Prince selected were appropriate for the venue. And he KILLED the performance. It was amazing.

A short and so-so performance of Let's Go Crazy and some of his other hits, went in to an emotional and short Watchtower, then into a fierce version of the Foo Fighter's 'best of you' complete with Prince's own guitar solo drool, and of course ending it with a decent version of Purple Rain was great. The energy, the performance, the fact that Prince NAILED that shit to the goddamned floor, really caused a great deal of momentum for him.

I can still remember the buzz of the performance and talking with my other Prince fan friends about how he really did something special that night. I mean, I'll be honest. I half expected him to go up there, perform some obscure jazzy songs, then stop in mid performance and say shit like "The opposite of Nato is Otan. All those who believe in god, to this side of the station. Now all those who don't, to that side. You folks on that side--we're gonna take your women! Miami, do you own your masters!!!?!?!?!?"

But he behaved. He excelled. He impressed as only he could do.

If Prince had dropped something on par with The Gold Experience after that performance, you'd be at one of the biggest hits of his career.

Really . I felt that Superbowl performnance was him on another plane. The song selection itself had me salivating at what he was going to do next. And it was PE? What a let down. Even though PE has one of his best ever ballads with his best line, SHOE. I thought with the material he selected to use for the Superbowl that he was stretching and opening himself up again musically. It took until now for him to follow through with LotusFlower material and the live performances that have included Jimmy Eat World covers and such. This era was what I felt should have come next. The mash-up of two rock songs (Watchtower and Best of You) was what a lot were praising from the Superbowl. So I figured the next reelase would either have that as a studio cut or something similar classic and current rock-wise. But it came with LotusFlower in the tune of Crimson n Clover instead (which is just as good imo) and the Wall of Berlin looseness. Maybe thats how far ahead Prince is thinking. He already had PE in the can as a project to do live in vegas and such and THEN he would do the LotusFlower stuff which is where he was at with during the Superbowl era?

Yeah. Bowl was like receiving good head and then PE made us have to jack off and do the rest ourselves. But since it had SHOE and Guitar, even bad head is better then no head.

That's a good point, but doesn't seem like Lotus Flower was created just yet.

planet earth should have included the studio version of "all along/best of you",
"glasscutter" and "f.u.n.k." perhaps even a re-recorded version of the song of
the heart (without the penguin banter).

that would have made it a more solid album. the way it was released i just hate
everything about it. there are 2 songs i like and the rest is meh to urgh.

the superbowl performance was good but we've seen prince do much more special
stuff. but you know the general public loves this kind of stuff, they eat it
up. and that's a good thing. he deserved all the praise he got, even if it was
on the back of musicology-3121-planet earth, which was a rather weak line up
of albums.

no we shouldn't. we should be talking about a way to sinc the audio levels
on occasional tracks to sound cohesive enough for alternate album versions.

but i guess we could talk blowjobs now and personalised albums later shrug

It was extremely special...I was there, soaking wet. lol

I will never understand why he didn't use that opportunity to capitalize on the huge momentum that was generated by that occasion.

"from the lotus" is mentioned on 3121 as well as "wall of berlin" which gives you some insight into how long these themes have been kicking around and how far ahead he probably is. In addition, the fact that he did not take full advantage of the Superbowl hype is telling of the degree of fame that he is comfortable with. I always suspected that he loves to work but is not too big on being too great of a celebrity any longer. He doesen't want Michael Jackson's degree of fame or the hassles that come with it!

Well me and Planet Earth are pretty good friends, and I have to say that PE gets it's fair share of speculation around here, I personally prefer it over the raved about 3121.
I think the Lotusflow3r album came out at the exact right moment for itself.
I would agree that the F.U.N.K. jam would have been a nice addition to PE, but perhaps it was not around then.
And imagine me, a die hard Prince Fanatic, who just recently viewed the Superbowl per4mance, on the sidelines rooting for my man in spirit and finally able to express my undying affection on this magical keyboard and carefully crafted org experience.
Yeah it took me a ahile but I made it. cool
I would also LOVE to Hear this Glasscutter song I have heard mentioned

F.U.N.K. definitely works on Planet Earth. I hate Chelsea Rodgers, so the copy in my car has F.U.N.K. in it's place. Much better now. headbang

well that'sw what i want to find out lol it would be nice if you could
put stuff like glasscutter and funk or silvertongue on your own version
of an album and have it sound like it fits in, rather than it sounding a
lot softer or louder or more muffled, flat or whatever.
