Musicology and Planet Earth. after 16 years of adoration i thought it would
be near impossible to be left so cold by a prince album that i would not be
in the mood to pick it up and play it at all after the first week. it was a shock
that it happened not once but twice in the span of 3 years.

fuck that shit. You're my bitch.

Aside from NEWS, Xpectation, and various other oddities from the NPGMC days, I'd say there are no albums I wish didn't exist. Even the bad ones, I can spin a few tracks from time to time. Plus it's kind of fun to see Prince trying new directions or taking a stab at something even if it feels half assed or embarrassing. He could be MJ, afterall, and essentially just release the same album over and over again, but with variations in production and vocal treatment. lol

But the two albums I've listened to the very least (even less than New Power Soul) are his first two albums, "For You" and "Prince". They don't even sound like Prince to me. They sound like Prince doing covers or something, and the falsetto that appears on every track gets tiresome. I've heard him do live renditions of those songs, both from early concert recordings and from recent ones, and the songs really 'pop' live. If he rerecorded those albums, I'd definitely probably obsess over the new recordings.

come to think of it, New Power Soul makes me want to punch some body in the face.

diamonds and pearls, i can understand. the prince songs are good enough
but the production and the rapping makes the album as a whole pretty much
the one that aged worst of all his albums imo.

but why the gold experience? i can see how some of the tunes have aged
pretty bad as well but the guitar tracks and the more timeless funk on
it is straight up some of his best material.

what is it that you don't like about it?

Well I love certain tracks, like "Endorphin Machine", "Dolphin", etc... but I can't stand the interludes... they break up any continuity the album might have had. Also, I can't stand "319" and "Pussy Control". I wouldn't say those 2 songs "aged well", so 2 speak.

Where is this "timeless Funk" U refer 2 on that album? I only ask because I'm a Funk freak, and that was one of problems with that album... I wouldn't call "319" or "Pussy Control" Funk in any way.

yeah, i understand what you mean. as much as i always think i love that album,
i don't play it a whole lot either.

although "dolphin" is one of my fav prince songs from any era and i love all
of the guitar based tracks on it.

i thought the segues tied it all together very nicely when it was released,
but over the years they have become more and more cheesy. just like all the
segues on exodus are fun but if you've heard them 10 times it's enough for
a lifetime.

love "319" tho lol but p control makes me cringe, badly.

However...I have a few that I rarely listen to...
One I have not spun in the player for a minute is Karmasutra.

Off with the R! biggrin

By the way, that's one hell of a good record to me.

Whooops! hahaha

Like I even have to make this list, but I will.

ONA
ONA Live
N.E.W.S.
Indigo Nights
Musicology
The Rainbow Children
Xpedtation
most all the NPGMC stuff
and...don't shoot me, but For You. I bet I can count on both hands the times I've listened to this over the years. Just not my thing. As far as the others... bleck.

OH.....and Goldnigga.

Many of the songs on these albums have not aged well---FOR ME

Emancipation (a handful of exceptions)

Rave (one or two exceptions)

Diamonds and Pearls (few exceptions)

Graffiti Bridge (there are obvious exceptions)

Symbol Album (a few exceptions)

I'm realizing that FOR ME his work over the past 10 years in many ways is stronger and more fulfilling than much of his work from the 90's (TGE and The Truth are sublime exceptions).

Well see, that's how much we pretend it doesn't exist. We've totally blocked it out by this point. haha

And the varying opinions is what's interesting. No one should try to convince anyone Planet Earth is better or worse than Musicology or One Nite Alone. After Purple Rain, there are only a few Prince albums that have roughly the same sound, back to back. Like ATWIAD and Parade are sisters. Whereas SOTT and Lovesexy are worlds apart. Even D&P and prince differ despite so many of the songs being written in the same big time frame. But then you have stuff like Gold and Exodus which are brothers in arms. Like the saying goes, you can't please all the people all the time.

Exactly. The Vault has become one of my favorite Prince albums. I'm on a mission to get ONA but I refuse to pay $300. Also, NEWS is underrated. Like it for what it is and not what it ain't.

once in a blue moon i decide i should give it another chance and figure
that like with so many other types of music i might have not been in the
mood at the time or judged it wrongly.

however, kamasutra remains the one album that, despite repeated spins
and years of gestation, remains as "blech!" as it was the first time
i had the displeasure of hearing it.

i've said this many times on the org when it comes to kamasutra but when
i received my crystal ball through the post back in 1998, i got two copies
of "The Truth" in my ball and no kamasutra.

at the time i was pissed off about that. but once i got a copy of kamasutra
all i could do was feel incredibly sorry for the person who got it twice,
and received no copy of "the truth"

Yeah, I'd take the Truth over the Kamasutra, any day. Pun intended. lol

Once I'd heard Cutz, I just summed the entire disc up as "a bad haircut." And there is nothing worse than a bad haircut.
