I'm thinking about getting SOTT just to see the difference. It could only help the original horrible mastering.

What do you mean? Most of Prince's Warner albums are very well mastered, including SOTT (don't forget that mastering means keeping the sound as it was intended by the original artist and mixing engineer). It's his later ones that are horribly mastered: The Rainbow Children, Musicology, LotusFlower, MPLSound are prime examples but nearly all of his post-Warner releases sound garbage (and i'm talking only about sound quality now).

They R adorable, but without knowing if they sound any better than the standard WB issued CDs, forget about it!

We all know how horrible the WB original 'Sign O' The Times' and 'Around The World in a Day' CDs were!

What we really need is 4 someone 2 tell us the sonic difference (if any) between the original 'Around The World in a Day' and 'Sign O' The Times' CDs, and these!

Gotta say that I love the mini-sleeves. The double albums include both sleeves!

So does anyone who has these want 2 discuss the sound quality?

I have a question since I don't see that anyone has asked it yet....how is the sound quality of the new Japanese releases compared to the originals....since no one has asked yet.

No one has complained about the sound quality, but folks here sure would like 2 know how they sound.

U see... I have every one of Prince's albums, B-Sides, etc... on VINYL. There's no problem with the VINYL, but when WB issued the CDs, the mastering was...

OH FORGET ABOUT IT.

NOW... back 2 the question at hand...

Sound?

REVIEW I
Well, I see everybody's is dying for a good review and I hope I can provide one with this message. I bought all 10 of them last week and received them today. Now, first a nice cup of coffee, all the old cd-releases in line for the player and the new SHM-ones. Boy, I didn't know what hit me! I'm really confused why everybody's/some people are saying: oh, they sound slightly better. What do you mean? They sound awesome! I picked some tracks which I thought would depict a real good difference compared to the old releases. So, songs like DMSR, Little Red Corvette, Tambourine, America, Temptation, Darling Nikki, Sexuality, Controversy, It, Hot Thing - man, it's sheer heaven. The funk comes blasting through my stereo. Then, when I play the old ones, it creeps right back into the box again and stays distant (I'm sorry, I don't know what better way to describe it). Now, people, I'm not at all an audiophile or an expert on these matters, but even my ears hear they sound way better than the 80's cd. I cannot tell for sure if they've been remastered (doesn't the artist have to give permission for that?), but they definetely SOUND better. The sound is improved dramatically and all tracks have a nice, complete, warm, crystal clear and distinctive feel/touch to it (bass/drums anyway). Well, at least that's what I am hearing. When I played all the tracks I mentioned before, I even heard sounds I never heard before in some of them.
I'm honest when I say I bought them for the paper-sleeves in the first place as I get a real 80's (almost teenage-like) feeling with that: just like when you bought the original album. They all look absolutely smashing: all cd's were miticuously reproduced like the original, so yes: Controversy with shower-poster (!), 1999 with 2 inner sleeves although all 11 tracks are on 1 cd, Purple Rain with poster, Around The World with original back-side flap, Sign O' The Times with the most adorable little peach postcard + blue heart-shaped sticker (not attached to the sleeve), Lovesexy with the white front-sticker (also not attached) and all the releases have their original inner-sleeves, etc. Even the sleeves themselves are like the old ones: Lovesexy with shiny effect, but f.e. Controversy has a matt finish. So, everything's been taken into account - just the way us fans like it. Now, I know, the price-tag is the cliffhanger for most people. I paid $320 for mine, but I'm really really glad I bought them. If any ?, please mail me. I'm happy to answer any ? or do any comparing-tests.

The Day After: Today's another listening-party. Will take my SHM-collection to a friend with even better stereo than me. We'll be comparing the old releases to the SHM-ones. Real curious to find out what he thinks/hears.....I'll keep everyone updated in this thread.

cinnamonboy, would you say they sound improved in the way that "the ultimate collection" tracks sounded (louder, clearer treble, strong bass)?

I'm gonna check for you now.....just a few minutes, please.....
eek

Phew, a hard one this: Ultimate was remastered, wasn't it? Ultimate is just a few notches harder in sound, that's for sure. When I compare the sparse produced songs (best way for me to compare clearness) f.e. Controversy and Delirious, I get the same feeling: the sound comes to me (out of the boxes) and it sounds warm(er) & clear(er). They both (SHM + Ultimate) definitely sound way harder than the original cd's and much more bass & drums which are also more distinctive. But I'm not sure about which one sounds better between Ultimate and SHM, maybe because I'm just fooled about the little volume-difference between the two. I'll do some more tests and maybe a friend of mine can listen in as well (also Prince-fan). I'm now listening to Lovesexy (indeed, 1 track) and I'm sitting in the next room (behind my PC), but it still sounds great especially because of the super-ass-sounding bass.

The Day After: Today's another listening-party. Will take my SHM-collection to a friend with even better stereo than me. We'll be comparing the old releases to the SHM-ones. Real curious to find out what he thinks/hears.....I'll keep everyone updated in this thread.

Since these are coming from WB Japan...

Why would WB decide NOT 2 do this in the US??

Manufacturing cost, perhaps?
