How do you explain P's music...

...to someone who does get/listen to his music?

I find myself having a hard time doing this.

i start with the talent and the technical proficiency, then talk a bit about some of the less-known projects he's done, like N*E*W*S or madhouse, and that there's more to him than just the hits and the hairdos and the high heels. he's done enough legit work that non-fans just don't know about, that if you talk the obscure stuff up enough, most people will be intrigued to check some of it out. that's always been my angle, but then again, i know a lot of music geeks. shrug

i should try the obscure angle...see how that goes lol

i know there are different tastes in music, but i sometimes don't understand how someone can not like certain tracks of P's. My greatest accomplishment so far has been getting one of my friends to listen to and like 'Mountains'.

It's kind of like an episode of The Golden Girls that I remember.

Dorothy (Bea Arthur..RIP) is talking to Sophia (Estelle Getty...RIP) and Blanche (Rue McClannahan) about something sexual, all in innuendo. Rose (Betty White) poses a question as to what they're talking about, and Dorothy says,

"Rose, if you have to ask it does not matter anymore."

Usually when I'm discussing music by anyone with someone who truly appreciates music it's an open discussion of viewpoints and tastes. Me and my friends sometimes put each other on to artists that we'd never normally listen to on our own. they all know of my appreciation of prince's music and that it's a large part of my music collection. Some of my people have no like for him or his music. Others respect all he has accomplished and his obvious talent. There's a lot to him that's up for discussion such as his initial move to the internet and the ways he distributes his music. It's a lot more to debate than some artists who may have 2 or 3 albums and a catalog of 25 to 30 songs under their belt. Ther bottom line is that if you keep an open mind regarding any music you will be pleasantly surprised more often that not.

Invite people over and play "The Rainbow Children." and don't tell anyone who it is...See what they say when it's over. That's what I did...I got a fan out of a young musician that didn't know anything about Prince...He said he'd go back to New York and look for his records. I was proud that day. cool

When I find myself explaining P's music, or what's cool about his music to someone with just a passing interest in him... I realize I just sound like dork on the verge of scary-dork.

Then I slowly back away.

I only eplain the song. People have their own misconcieved notions about Prince and when you try to include both of them in conversation; you tend to loose because they don't understand him or his appearence any more than they do when it comes to Little Ricdhard or Ozzie Osborn.
