It the next album. Then he should do part a blues & country. Loved the country sound he used on the Muppets Show.

I love the jazz stuff.

It all comes down to class.

Some people got it, most don't! biggrin

I don't really consider N.E.W.S. a jazz record. Madhouse 8 is really more like it and it's still pretty fused.

N.E.W.S. is easy listening, as is Xpectation for sure, as well as C-Note from what I remember.. Madhouse was truly jazz fused with funk and pop, and awesome stuff. Yet as close as they were recorded, VERY different sounds on either.

I wouldn't mind an album full of things like 'blue light' 'slow love' and the rendition of here on earth he did last night. A ballads record could be great.

LadyLuvSexxy

I love it when he does Jazz. Or when he gives other people permission to Jazz up his songs. I want to slow dance to the jazzed up version of Venus de Milo at my wedding reception someday. Hell, that's good sexin music you know. lol

Prince falls into the most people category. Someone has to take a look outside his ass and realize that.

And let's review his exactly quote from the Tavis interview:

Talking about Target's deal, "I hope to do more deals like this with artists like Anita Baker, John Blackwell, Rhonda, and Renato - we're trying to work on some jazz things right now. But um, time will tell."

THAT was the quote. He never said his next album will be a jazz album.

And, I hope he doesn't. I wasn't confused about the quote. Other people were (just like I knew he wasn't saying his next project would be an Anita album lol )

I just wanted folks to know of the original thread -- so this one could get a lock

I think you'll find that without jazz, there would be no funk and soul. What do you think Maceo's solos add to James Brown's band? What is the genesis of those phat soul horn sections? Big bands! Miles Davis fused jazz and rock, to excellent results. Mingus was inspired by the same gospel music that inspired Sly Stone. These are a lot of similarities you can find if you delve below the surface. MMW are jazz, but if you like funk, it'd be hard not to like them.

Incidentally, I agree that N.E.W.S. was far from his best, but it's not *that* jazz either. I mean it's got a few 'jazzy' solos, but let's get real, it was more a funk record than a jazz record. If Prince does to a jazz album I hope he really knocks it out of the ball park with the composition and arrangement!
Take it - like Clarence said:

all different U know."

hey everyone! think about it, prince is always working on different projects - sometimes they come out as one album (NEWS,ONA), sometimes they get merged/scattered around different albums (MUSICOLOGY,PE etc).

Also the Jazz set he did at the Nokia gig with renato may have been what he was working on, some of those songs were drastically jazzified. they would have taken awhile to arranged.

I can see prince releasing an album of re-worked songs in the jazz style.
