How did you start listening to Prince?

i start listening to Prince late last year. When i got my Psp for christmas i went to itunes and start download Michael Jackson songs..then i thought to myself who was MJ biggest competition so i downloaded When Doves Cry because that was the only song i ever knew by Prince. then i saw 1999 & Little Red Corvette so i downloaded them.it took 1 week before i gave them two songs a chance an i liked them so i start downloading more songs,an now i THINK PRINCE IS BETTER THAN MJ. an to date i think i listen to over more than 300 or more Prince songs..an i no his whole discography(or something like that),an i have no MJ on my PSP

I got into Prince in 2004. My dad was watching the Grammies and I came into the room and he started telling me how great Prince was back in the day and then he told me the titles of some of his songs and he told me about the heels of course wink and since I have a thing for eccentrics I fell in love with him almost immediately after I bought my first cd biggrin
I think it's true love wink

You know the first musician I really liked was Michael Jackson. But now I feel I've musically grown somehow...

Jamie Foxx's stand up about meeting Prince...

Jamie Foxx's "Brady Bunch" rendition where he imitated a few artist singin style includin Prince
and I said I have to hear if this dude really screams and makes all dem funny noises...
and here I am now! biggrin

I use to see Prince before but never paid much attention to him.
I jus use to think "damn this man's pretty... and weird as hell!"
I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

Very similar thread here, just posted 3 weeks ago:

http://prince.org/msg/7/307288

Here's my response from that thread:

I asked my mom to buy me a K-Tel album from Target in 1980. It was called Soundwaves. (It was never issued on CD, but I have 2 vinyl copies). It had great hits like "Upside Down" from Diana Ross, "Let's Get Serious" from Jermaine Jackson, "Funkytown" from Lipps, Inc and a load of others. But on side one, it had "I Wanna Be Your Lover" from some weird dude named Prince. The album cover to PRINCE was even on the back of the record jacket. I fell in love with the song. I hated that it was so short (under 3 minutes for the radio edit). I've been a fan since.

And over the years, since Napster and iTunes, I've collected all those songs and made a playlist on my iPod of the same track listing as the album.

Prince influenced me a lot in high school. With my parents VERY ugly separation and divorce (1980), music truly became an escape. I started reading lyric sheets, producer credits, musician credits, all the "Thank You's", etc. (I knew who Randy Jackson was way before he even joined Journey in the 80's, simply because he was on every record I had it seemed.) Prince was just in that mix of escapism. And the fact that he released an album a year didn't hurt either. I had a purple trench coat, round glasses, etc etc. I don't regret any of it, despite of how crazy I might have looked. It was the 80's and I was a teenager. (UTCM was out when I graduated high school in 1986). It was a fun time growing up with Prince. I'm only 10 years younger than him.

My older brother bought Purple Rain and i listened to it constantly. Went to see the movie and became hooked on the whole Minn. sound. Then a coworker said i should try Controversy and 1999. Prince was the man from then on.

^^You're Apollonia89, I'm Apollonia1986 on another board! LOL^^

My Prince upbringing is patchy at best. I first heard him singing Get Off in the infamous assless trousers when I was 5, but I had no clue who he was. I just thought he was a strange man in loud clothing with a hole in his pants.

So as I got older, I got into Michael Jackson and whenever I'd read old articles about him-80s memorobilia is a hobby of mine--I kept reading about this man called Prince. Prince Prince Prince...How he was fighting with MJ and all that jazz.
When I was 12, I had a friend that raved on and on about the movie Purple Rain and how Prince was in it. she woul;dn't shut the hell up. For three months, that was all she talked about. Finally, I had to see what all the fuss was about.

I went to the local video store--called WCs--and rented Purple Rain. Scared the shit out of me.

Prince came across as this danerous, motorcycle riding, guitar playing, big-boobie woman slapper and it just kind of frightened me. And yet, I was intrigued. I don't know why. But people are just drawn to Prince cause his little ass is so pretty. He seemed like a smaller, X-rated Version of MJ.

In the floowing years, I kind of peeked at Prince becase he scared my mom too. She thought Prince rotuinely hid in the bushes and humped anything with a pulse then wrote a song about it.

I kind of dug Prince, he was so different and strange. I mean hello, I am also a Michael Jackson fan, so STRANGE is a prerequisite for any man in my life.

Finally, I was watching American Idol a while back and there was Prince. Fresh and Pretty as ever. And I've been in a glittery purple little world ever since.

biggrin

I can't put an age to this memory but, I do remember being in my Dad's gameroom in the basement while his friends played pool and just staring at the Parade album cover thinking, "Wow he's pretty!". Another memory is singing Kiss at the top of my lungs... My dad (the one whom I blame for my purple addiction), thought that was hilarious. There's others that come into mind as flashes of memory... Wishing I was the girl he sang about in U Got The Look while wearing my mom's heels etc... big grin

Naw, just a company or something that he doesn't seem to be using right now, but really who knows. There was Emancipation radio online.
