Like every other Prince project, it was aborted and never came out. Not sure if there just wasn't enough interest, a WB problem, or Prince just decided he wanted to do something else. Those samples on the Rave DVD are all you're gonna get.

Not sure if there just wasn't enough interest, a WB problem, I believe that was the official explanation, but how would they have known? As far as I remember there was only the ad, there wasn't ever any opportunity to register your interest - or was there? I don't remember any, and I had intended to buy the set so I'm pretty sure it never got further than the ad.
or Prince just decided he wanted to do something else. Seems more likely.
Those samples on the Rave DVD are all you're gonna get. There are samples on the Rave dvd? Is it just a few samples on the ad for the $700 set or is there anything useable on there?Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

If what you're talking about is what I think you're talking about, then they're not samples from the $700 set, they're a fan creation pretending to be some of the samples from the set. There's also some redone Linn loops that someone recreated. I have loops for Anotherloverholenyohead, and something from 1999. It's not the official tracks to my knowledge, but they're pretty convincing. They're not created from the tracks either. It's someone who messed with a Linn drum and recreated them. I have only like 3 or 4.

There are samples on the commercial on the DVD. You could take the audio from that, and chop them up and use them if you wanted. NOT SAYING THAT'S LEGAL.

Prince decided against releasing the set in the end (with some persuasion from Femi). At first he thought it would be a good idea to release his own sample set like George Clinton had done. But the thought 1,000 wannabe DJs and remixers legally putting out tons of terrible dance tracks filled with Prince samples (and the loss of control that goes along with it) finally put a stop to it (and I tend to agree). Other than the few samples used in the online and DVD ads for the set, none of the samples have leaked. There's a lot of fan made samples doing the rounds, as well as a few patches that came from a keyboard that was sold during one of the Paisley Park garage sales.

Yeah, it's an obvious fan made deal. The give-away is that all of the "samples" are taken from a capella tracks and easily obtained snippets. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

There's an entire CD's worth of samples from the Linn LM1 floating about. A few years back, a dude with the LM1 made it and was selling it on eBay. Nice little thing to have. Just for giggles: If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Yes, Directly through the 1800 number. So there was no way for most of us to register our interest. Don't think it would've made a difference though, I think what BorisFishPaw said is about on the mark. Plus, it was limited to 1000, wasn't it? I would be very surprised if there weren't at least 1000 people in the US who did register their interest, so the notion of it being cancelled due to lack of interest holds no water. Had it gone ahead he'd probably have had more than just 1000 wannabe DJ's to worry about - bit of a double-edged sword really, he may have ended up as the most sampled artist in history (he may still end up getting that accolade), but once in the public domain it would've been impossible to control legal/illegal usage of those samples. You can imagine that if a couple of major record labels had bought a copy, then every crap pop song churned out would have a Prince sample in it. squirrelgrease said: nyse said: Thats what I think also.... Some of them are good, I've actually created a few of those samples myself for use in mixes, had I had those samples then, it would've saved me a bit of messing about. squirrelgrease said: There's an entire CD's worth of samples from the Linn LM1 floating about. Yeah, there's actually quite a few LM1 sample sets floating about, some better than others. I did at one point consider buying an LM1, but they're too expensive for what is to all intents and purposes an obsolete toy (but would still be a very nice toy to own).Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. AsylumUtopia said: Ah ok, I remember that. Unfortunately for most of us, US 1-800 numbers only work in the US.
There was always a local Minneapolis phone number for people outside of MPLS and the US. The one place the 800 number didn't work (aside from outside the US) was Minneapolis itself. If you were local, you had to use the local number.

I wasn't aware of that but I probably would've ignored it anyway. OK, the cost of an international phone call would've been a (relatively) nominal amount, but I wouldn't do it now, and I suspect I wouldn't have done it then. I'm not in the habit of subsidising Prince's 1-800 numbers for him.*
It's the same thing with the LotusFlow$r t-shirts. $7 for postage? What's it wrapped in? A lead tin? $7 for a free t-shirt isn't free and I'm not about to subsidise US postage costs for Prince either. (* that bit doesn't actually make any sense, but never mind) [Edited 5/26/09 10:08am] Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.
