Dave1992 said: EmancipationLover said: The problem some people seem to have with this fantastic album result from two major misunderstandings imo:
1) When Prince announced "Emancipation" as the record he was born to make, some people apparantly had something like a super-TGE in mind, i.e. a very band-oriented sound and heavy guitar work. However, Prince changed directions and gave them a pop album. 2) The filler problem: Everyone claims that cutting down the album to one or two discs would improve its quality. But: ask two people about their idea of a one-disc "Emancipation", and you'll get three opinions. The whole concept of the album was to get all of the music out so everyone may decide which tracks they love and which are the ones they skip. Wanna have a one-disc "Emancipation"? Simply warm up your CD burner! This is what I've been trying to tell people forever! Unfortunately, not all of them listen to you/us...

Some interesting tracks and alternate versions on there in very very high quality. Makes an interesting companion disc. I really like the alt version of new world/slave & 2020. 01. Slave 2 the System 02. New World (Alt) 03. Slave (Alt) 04. 2020 05. Feel Good 06. Right Back Here 07. Journey to The Center of Your Heart 08. I Am The DJ 09. Goodbye 10. Emancipation (Alt) [Edited 5/25/09 14:05pm] I have some of those songs, but I never knew another version of New World existed! What does it sound like?

The flipside of that is that there is some GREAT songs also, and filtered down to 1, or even 1.5 CD's worth there is a CLASSIC album there. well said, because of the 1,5 CD for me IT IS a classic though....

Slave to the system is great though, as is 2020 and the other version of Emancipation. IMHO! "My God it's full of Stars"

I LOVE THIS SONG!!! I wish he would release it on an album. It would have worked on MPLSOUND. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

It has regularly been said by music reviewers, not necesarilly Prince-fanatics, but relative outsiders that with a better production, and stripped down to a single album, this could have been Prince best album since Sign of the Times.
I somehow agree with them. Around the time of release, maybe a lot of 'us' Prince fans were uber-excited about the promise of Emancipation being 'the album I was dying to make' and were therefore extra dissapointed with the often plastic production and the number of filler. In general Emancipation did get good to very good reviews in the music press, probably based on the situation that underneath the plastic, there were at least 10 - 12 songs on those 3 CD-s that showed that Prince still was a great songwriter. It were these kind of reviews that made me look at the album in another light. [Edited 5/26/09 8:11am] [Edited 5/26/09 8:12am]

I liked the album (and still do). There are a few duds on there, but it is a good album overall. I listened to it regularly for about 3 or 4 years. I sill revisit it from time-to-time, though. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I also like all 3 discs, although I must say that I like disc II least. Disc I is most consistent but I like disc III best as there a couple of stellar songs there - especially One of us, which is in my Top 10 of Prince songs even though it is a cover. He completely owns that song, so over time I tend to appreciate it as a Prince song.

I like all 3 discs. My fave is disc II co-co-co-co sign. Such an expansive album. Stuart Maconie (UK critic and DJ) said at the time that you should take 2 weeks off work, put a tent in your garden and just listen to/absorb this album - it deserved that focused attention. Disc 2 contains some of his most open lyrics, heartfelt and perfect vocals - just a beautiful disc.

I did like a lot of the ballads on disc 2, but it gets pretty dull to me after a while. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-
