Listen ernest you dangleberry, it was Parade he wasn't happy or satisfied with, not UTCM.

Mark, have you read the DMSR book? There is a chapter in there that talks about Prince's disappointment with UTCM.Before it was released,he was at home with Susannah, laying on the floor, yelling "I hate this movie!".He was actually in tears because it didn't turn out the way he envisioned it.

but I can see where the confusion comes from.In the 1990 Rolling Stone interview,Prince says "I don't regret anything about Under The Cherry Moon.I've learned that I can't direct something that I didn't write".

Agreed. Someone else besides Prince or Mary Lambert should have directed it. Mary had that diva attitude, and Prince did near everything in one take only. He doesn't know how to nurture an actor and walk through a scene and get it right, and really craft a story. I don't know how could have directed it, but it should not have been Prince.

Sylvester Stallone ? Remember he helped Jon Trevolter and directed Staying Alive.
Plus both , him and Prince, were really into fitness at that time.

At one point,Prince wanted Martin Scorsese to direct it.I wish he had followed through with this idea.

Thank you for that back up. That's exactly what I was referring to. It's obviously something Marrk hasn't read yet. DMSR is absolute required reading for a Prince fan I think (among other great books of course.)

You're so far off base. If he hated the album, he wouldn't have performed EVERY SINGLE SONG FROM THE RECORD WHILE ON THE HIT N RUN TOUR (except "Venus De Milo" and "Sometimes It Snows In April", although he did perform the latter late in the tour IIRC).

Yet in contrast, he hyped the One Nite Alone Live album as his first live album and slapped a $50 price tag on it because it was such a big freakin' deal, yet barely performed two songs from the album that the tour was named for (one song being only 1 minute long on the Live set).

He hated the movie. It's documented, and it's fact.

Prince could be lying - or joking - when ha said he didn't liked the Parade album, in fact I'm 100% sure he was just JOKING,

I'm sure he loves this masterpiece of an amazing recording... Parade is one of his greatest albums.. heart

same with the DMSR book, how do we know for sure Prince hated the UTCM movie, I know it is well described in the book, but still is this book 100% a fact? I'm not saying the author is making it all up, but how do we know this story about Prince lyin' on the floor is true?

- again it could be "a lie" / not exactly the truth, to create myth or whatever..?

just imo. with Prince you never know.... wink

All hail to... Parade/ UTCM.... cool Great music & movie.... love

Well let's be realistic, and think about this. DMSR is as close to the fact, if not actually BEING the facts, as a book has ever gotten to Prince's life. Per's involvement in all things Prince, plus his interviews w/ past band members, girlfriends, etc, was invaluable.

Let's not forget that life is always more interesting than fiction. It never fails to be such. Why wouldn't Prince be laying on the floor? It's just something people do. We've all laid in the middle of the floor for whatever reason. The situation could have been "Prince was driving and kept hitting the steering wheel, saying 'I hate this movie!' as he drove around Lake Calhoun in a fit of rage and frustration over the failure of the movie to come out as he wanted." Then people would have asked "But was he REALLY in the car?" Well sure...it's just where he was and what he was doing.

I think people are possibly picturing Prince face down and throwing a fit like a 2 year old, having a purple tantrum. That's probably NOT the case. But if he was ON the floor per chance, and maybe HIT the floor w/ his hands a few times while saying "I hate this movie", then that's the story we have, and it's probably a simple thing, but seems HUGE for some reason. I believe it happened though.

PS I love the album. I loved everything about it down to the credits in the album, to the pictures, all the way up to the actual music.

'the First Ten Years'? sure i've read it, like any 'fly on the wall' anecdote in any biographical book, i take them with a pinch of salt.

I preferred David Hills 'A Pop Life', very similar in content.

As for performing it on the H&R tour, could be that they're good songs (I love The Album personally) but he was never satisfied with the arrangement, production or whatever. the fact he performs a rock version of 'Anotherlover' these days might be testament to the fact he wished he'd done it differently in the first place.

I can't think of a song in his catalogue that has been re-imagined in such a way.

No offense with the silly names btw, just messing Ernest! smile

Dave's book was great too. But it covered a much shorter period. And most of the band members were still around IN the band or JUST left when Dave was writing his book. So it's all about time passed, perspective from band members, etc when Per wrote his book.

That's not true. He said he was never satisfied with how "Kiss" sounded. He said "Maybe one day, 'Kiss' will sound right." Oddly, he's performed "Kiss" relatively closely to the album version over the years, sans an occasional diff' version. And every performer changes up a song now and then. That's why we have things like "unplugged". That's why people do acoustic sections in a concert, or release an acoustic album of previously released songs. It's not because they aren't satisfied with it, it's because they're just doing something different NOW, not trying to change the past. And if you listen, "Anotherlover" is a rock song to begin with anyway, so if he uses a guitar for the lead hook instead of a keyboard or something....so be it.

I can't think of a song in his catalogue that has been re-imagined in such a way.

He has performed two versions of "Gett Off" in the same show. And the piano medley (and later guitar medley) sections of his shows are the very example of him reimagining a song right in front of ya. Remember the dreadful days when he reimagined "Take Me With U" and "Raspberry Beret" as a medley, instead of separate songs?

I love Under The Cherry Moon. I wore out my VHS tape back in the day! Thank GOD for my DVD copy. cool

Now if only WB would release all of Prince's films on BluRay with true remastered and restored versions including videos, behind the scenes footage, more interviews with cast and crew, and deleted scenes.

I agree with your assessment of Parade, but Prince doesn't. Or didn't, anyway. In the August(?) 1988 issue of Musician magazine (the best article on Prince I've ever read), P had this to say:

"Parade was a disaster. Aside from 'Kiss', there's nothing on it that I'm particularly proud of. It was a case of me not having enough strong material available at the time. It's a mistake I won't make again." (Paraphrased from memory)

I have no idea how he could have felt that way, but there it is. sad

What's amazing is that he DID have enough strong material to put on an album. Things like "Old Friends 4 Sale" and "All My Dreams" would have worked SO much better in the movie. Cue up "All My Dreams" and play it over the finish of UTCM when "Mountains" kick in. It's such a brighter note to end the movie on. It's very thematic in nature anyway. Lisa and Wendy should have recorded "Mia Bocca" and inserted it where "Do U Lie?" or "I Wonder U" was on the album.

UTCM was, in my mind, a vision into prince's more comedic side, more open and honest human side.

Alot of those lines sounds like something he would say just joking around with friends. you saw bit instances during that time period (1985-1986) where prince was becoming a lil bit more laid back publically.

since UTCM bombed, do you think prince closed back up, thinking the public wouldnt accept his more human/ comedic side of him? think about it. came SOTT there was barely an interview and he drifted behind his music for awhile.

is there a coordination with this or am i thinkin too hard?

i think UTCM was a better glimsp inside of Prince than PR, which was nothin more than pouts imo.

ive always taken UTCM as a comedy...in fact i think it nearly outstrips PR as the most watched P movie in my case...love it!!!

the thing with Prince imho is that casual fans will always compare him to PR- and UTCM was just so different. John C Citizen just wasnt ready sigh

damn shame...great comedy, great music, he can be forgiven for the corny love scenes
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret
