Has P given up on the LF project already OR is there a 'Phase 2'marketing planned? The project is too good to die, surely P's confidence can't have been knocked so much sideways by the largely poor press reviews?. Come on P, forget Cannes and get back to the USA , this project needs promo + a tour!.

He'll be on Leno again soon. Maybe that will signal a start to a second push". Someone reported today that the website team are going to be uploading "new" videos really soon too... Just somewhere in the middle,

"Someone"...? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hopefully, some unseen concert footage.. [Edited 5/20/09 5:41am] I just meant some other orger, they seem to be directly quoting a recent response from the support team but of course we all know that "really soon" in Prince world can sometimes mean never. Just somewhere in the middle,

and of course this response: We wish. but as we have seen before, P doesn't put much into "marketing" his projects lately. He said on Tavis that part of the reason he is not on the radio is that he doesn't have a major label backing and part of the reason he does not know. It's probably not worth his own $ just to see one of his albums have more chart life. How much more $ could he really pull in from cd sales compared to what he would spend to promote it. I have no idea, just throwing that out there. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

I may be being naiive here but presumably it doesn't cost Prince much (apart from equipment transport and band wages etc) to appear on shows like Leno and Ellen. They have booked him, they pay him, he gets "free" publicity for his latest release. So that kind of promotion will make financial sense to him as opposed to magazine and TV adverts, promo videos etc...
But, now the Target deal is done and dusted, I don't expect Prince really cares if those 3 CD sets just sit on a shelf and remain unsold. He has been paid in full in advance (just like he did for the UK Mail On Sunday Planet Earth deal, where you could argue that thousands of CDs may have just been chucked in the bin by people who buy the newspaper anyway). So why do we care about this behind the scenes stuff? Prince has enough money to carry on making music and we can therefore carry on buying it if we want to. Do you think it still stems from our desire to have Prince accepted by the masses and for them to rave about his latest music? Ironically I think I've always more veered towards the selfish side of thinking I am in a priveleged club of people and everyone else is somehow missing out. Just somewhere in the middle,

who knows....anything is possible Exactly. We'll just wait and see if something new happens. I hope it does. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Don't fool yourself. The Leno appearance is solely because Leno is leaving The Tonight Show, and he's having back some of his favorite and most popular guests. And since guests are booked a few months ahead of time (most times), it was no surprise that with the show ending, Prince's two different sets of appearances was announced together in March. The only thing it's going to signal is Jay leaving the 11:30 time slot.

chart "success" is not what he's after. most artists these days do an initial push up to the release then not much if anything thereafter. videos are a waste of money pretty much now. radio sucks so why release SINGLES. its a different era. no one is doing multi-platinum (2x maybe; but that's still the "current" acts). heard anything about U2's album lately?

That's not true. Plenty of artists get on every show possible, singing that one single they just released, and if possible the NEXT single. They plan a tour, still do press, and hit the road. They WORK for it. Prince has this idea that just because he's Prince and that Ellen and Jay are fawning over him, that others do too and he'll just sell a lot of music. It's a bit dismissive of the fan base and the public that he relies more on his name to sell music rather than WORKING to sell it and share themselves w/ folks in interviews etc. Prince should re-read his job description. If he wants it "old school", then he should operate that way. Don't bring sexy back, bring music back. If anyone can do it, he can. heard anything about U2's album lately?
Yeah that it sucks. | |

That's all very convenient for an artist who is all but ignored by the charts, and still has a bad taste in his mouth about record companies (the very people who promoted schlock like ....well, you know). Remember, the charts reflect sales, and if he's not selling, OF COURSE he's going to dismiss it and say it doesn't matter. But you have someone like Michael Jackson who used to consistently put out #1 albums, and have slews of #1 or Top 10 singles... he's the first to put out a CD of #1's, or the like. I believe Prince wants to sell records. If he didn't he'd sell them to just cover costs, and leave the profits to the fans. Or give it away for free like he said, what.....10 years ago or more? Free the music, indeed.

This is the only issue that I think Prince is not doing a good job at - promotion. Shame on him if he's letting LF die. This set should sell at least 500K each and go Gold. It's his fault if it doesn't. Gotta keep working on it. I can't imagine a "major" deal with anyone if LF doesn't sell more. All subsequent albums will be strictly over the internet, as all other viable options will have dried up. I think that LF is a make or break deal.
