Outside of this album, every other album shows the progression from the previous. Dirty Mind grew from Sexy Dancer and Bambi, Controversy grew from Head and Party Up, 1999 grew from Controversy and Annie Christian. Purple Rain grew from LRC and Something in the water. ATWIAD borrows from no other Prince album. Parade borrows directly from ATWIAD. Sott borrows from Parade...and so on... To me, ATWIAD borrows heavily from Purple Rain, in the same way that Purple Rain borrowed heavily from 1999.

Controversy for his much more confident vocal range and expression Around the World in A Day for his musical expression. Although PARADE was a better album , Around the World in a Day was when he truly started going all Beatle-esch on us. He range of styles, the inclusion of various instruments in strange arrangements, all just started to show that he was moving away from copying sounds of the day. 1999 and Purple Rain for all their glory (they're better than ATWIAD or PARADE) still borrowed heavily from the sounds that were popular at that time or the recent past (New Wave/Old Wave/Synth Pop/funk and Arena Rock). ATWIAD went all crazy on us. Raspberry Berret is a dance pop number with fucking violins/string sounds in it? Tambourine don't make NO fucking sense and didn't sound like ANYTHING anybody else was doing. Lord have mercy , could Micheal Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna or any of the big acts of the day pull of Condition of the Heart? Prince got his Joni Mitchell/John Lennon on with ATWIAD. He perfected it with PARADE and SOTT. But I say ATWIAD was his milestone for the great 80's albums that followed. great post Thank you! And thank you, flaimingraindrops

I agree. but I think it was at the right time. only 3 years later his albums became more premeditated. He has become careful. small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

Diamonds & Pearls or 1999-both made him a star to folks who didn't even know who he was
