Why does prince always say "turn the guitar up?"

he doesn't play that well thats why they keep the sound down don't you think?

he uses a lot of effects to cover up all the wrong notes

Okay, firstly I will ignore that first thing you said seeing as Prince is without a doubt the most talented, innovative guitarist to come along since Hendrix, Zappa and Wes Montgomery.

Secondly, my opinion is that he has kept his guitar low in the mix so as to make it another tone colour equal in importance to the rest of the music. What I mean by that is that too many rock guitarists put the distortion on and assume it should be louder than everything else...you know, JUST because it's the guitar solo it has to take the attention away from everything else. I think Prince's approach, as always, is very musical and makes you yearn for the sound of his guitar by burying it in the mix a little.

Waxing his ass? Because it turns you on to wax a man's ass?

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Each to their own.

He just likes to say this 'cause he thinks it sounds cool. If he wanted the guitar signal louder he could just signal a tech or step on one of his zillion stomp boxes and footswitches.
Yeah he does use many effects at times. I think there's periods he practices more (like the ONA tour), then he often plays his tele and uses fewer effects. When he's in less good shape (Rave DVD) he uses many effects and his more comfortable custom guitars with lighter strings, higher gain pickups and shorter scale necks. As to people "waxing his ass", the reason I admire his playing is musicality and soul, not pyrotechnics. I.E. the guy's a great player BECAUSE he doesn't care about waxing someone's ass".

Hectim, I know nothing about guitar playing (aside from what sounds great), but it seems you do. So I'll ask...

How often does Prince make mistakes in playing? I never really considered it, but I'd imagine its fairly common even for the best player.

Lammastide - no, mistakes with the best are not that common. The guitarist in my band plays the most complex riffs and almost always note-perfect. There are many other gifted musicians who are the same - Prince is one of them. Dave Gilmour is a guitarist famous for note-perfect performances.

In all the performances I have ever seen/heard, I have only ever noticed maybe 2 or 3 "mistakes" by Prince (one of those being on the Beautiful Experience video at the end of "Shhh" where Prince is on his knees with his guitar - he "peaks" it, which means he does not strike the string cleanly and you get a less than favourable sound! Someone with his expertise, however, manages to cover it extremely well!).

Another favourite Prince mistake (tho, this is a near-miss, rather than a mistake) is on the Lovesexy video. When Miko is playing the guitar solo in "I Wish U Heaven", Prince leans forward to sing in to the mike a bar early, but he notices (as Miko, of course, is still playing), pulls back, smiles at Miko and then sings. Just listening you would never notice, but it's cool to see Prince being human!

Yeah, many great players take great risks and every now and then end up playing something horrible. Check my hero Mick Ronson on Bowie's live White Light/White Heat! However, I don't remember ever hearing Prince make any real mistakes or playing 'bum notes'. There are times when his playing can be a little sloppy, which means he doesn't 'articulate' his notes very well when playing fast. His timing however is always impeccable! Other guitarists, do you agree?

Interesting you should say that. I must agree he likes to show off a little. Bit I've never seen or heard a performance where he tried to aggressively 'out-play' other (guest) musicians.
