Manufacter of Prince's ONA tour sound system discuss it's technical specifications and return to company home Hamamatsu

PM1D’s COME HOME ON TOUR WITH PRINCE

http://www.yamahacommerci...rince.html

Hamamatsu is the home of Yamaha, but being a small city in between Tokyo and Nagoya, it does not often host big name concerts. On 17th November 2002, however, Japanese leg of Prince’s ‘One Nite Alone 2002’ world tour stopped over in Hamamatsu with two PM1D’s in tow.

Eighth Day Sound, the Cleveland, Ohio based US hire company has been responsible for the sound of the tour. Tom Arko, the president of Eighth Day, says, "We have been investing in PM1D’s because digital is the future and that’s where our industry is going, and PM1D offers the most established and reliable solution. Also with Yamaha, we can count on the worldwide emergency support. There are still some SR engineers who are shying away from Digital consoles, but now more and more engineers are becoming PM1D capable. I think training is the key; engineers seem very comfortable after just a 2 day training course."

Owen Orzack, Touring Service Manager of Eighth Day, added, "We are supplying the Prince tour with two PM1D’s - one for FOH, the other for the monitors. The 2 systems are sharing AI8 Analog Input Boxes. We are not carrying any out board effect or insert racks. The internal effects, EQ and dynamics of PM1D do everything and that’s great. It saves a lot of space and cartage."

Scottie Pakulski, the FOH engineer says, "I used to be a complete analog guy. I was interested in PM1D, but I thought it was not for me. Now I love PM1D and I cannot live without it! It was actually Sean who introduced me to PM1D. I participated in PM1D seminar held by Yamaha America and after a few hours, I was playing with it. What is great about PM1D is its preciseness. Prince is (as you can imagine) so precise about sounds on the stage. I used to have to make notes on each setting, but now you can just store it. He uses dramatic effects with his guitar on stage, and that used to be a big challenge. Now with the internal effects on PM1D, it’s much easier, enjoyable and Prince loves the result. I can concentrate more on the quality of overall mixes."

Sean Sturge, the monitor engineer says "I first used PM1D for EMINEM on Grammy awards, and I immediately liked it. On using PM1D, I found a few areas where I would like improvement, like USB capability, tap tempo, free assign of channels on layers etc. It is a pleasant surprise to find they are now all included in Version1.5 software. I can't wait to try it out!" (At the time of the interview their PM1D’s were running on software version 1.4.)

Check out this article on Scottie (so is he the same 'Scottie' from "The Undertaker" that Prince says at the beginning of the song The Undertaker, "Scottie...shake something" to?

Although I have little to no idea what they're discussing as far as the technical aspects... it is still fascinating to read this behind the scenes type of stuff.

Great post. Thnx.
