Well. Gold was meant to be the next purple rain but which do think is better?

I think the gold ablum version is better than the purple rain album version
But purple rain always sounds better live smile

What's your opinion?

gold is a great song but it doesn't come close to the legendary status, impact and sound of p's signature song. i mean could you see gold being played at the end of the superbowl performance?

don't know why these 2 songs get compared...

Prince should have never compared Gold to Purple Rain.

I would call D&P more the equivelant of Purple Rain.

Its very commercial and aimed at the mainstream crowd.
And more importantly for WEA..... successful.

Exactly!!! It's not that Gold isn't a good track and a great album ender, but to compare it to Purple Rain is like making Jordan in his Prime play one on one with a high schooler.

I also felt like the verse in gold about the 99 year old woman was sort of aimless god squad stuff. Think the song would be much better without it

All that gitters ain't gold is such an old cliche and for it to be a hook in Gold kind of took some of the songs power away for me. The opening guitar the piano and violin in Purple Rain is so heartfelt it still blows me away. Not to mention, it's the revolution and thier unique sound. For me it's no contest

Yeah. Prince mentioned in an interview somewhere that (the yet unreleased) Gold was better than Purple Rain or something to that effect.

Anyone have the text?

Gold is a good song but Purple Rain is much better. Gold is good both musically and lyrically but especially lyrically, the quality of the music doesn't match the quality of the lyrics. Purple Rain is really good both musically and lyrically. The sound Prince managed to create with Purple Rain sounds so importnant and profound.

yeah, Purple Rain was the best thing ever written in my opinion. But Gold is on my list of certified classic albums that are good from start to finish. I will always hate the music business crap that was going on around that time with him. I feel that if he got half the good press that Diamonds and Pearls got (Cream went #1) this album would have produced some hits. It was one of his more commercial albums. And I say that because it was one of the easier albums he made that I got my non-Prince friends to sit through. I always got requests to play Billy-Jack Bitch at our parties.

Purple Rain, both live and on album. Gold is good, quite enjoyable in fact, but it's an example of an overproduced Prince song.
