Sometimes I just think that Prince likes to call his lover...Names...before you know it...He'll be calling her lover legion. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

It's one of his weakest ballads, and is easily confused with "Scandalous". Just kinda....blah.

Oh,man I hated the fact that Prince used that name. She's sounds like she's like 40 Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

its the same Martha from 1999's Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) who's mouth he "sincerely wanted to fu#k the taste out of".

That was in "Let's Pretend We're Married" and also the name was actually Marsha in that song. Some people think I'm kinda cute

I've always wanted to know who the fuck is Martha? Martha is just another way of say "momma"....Kinda like how "madea" is another way of saying "my dear" "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

The original early draft of Graffiti Bridge had a character called Martha in it (correct me if i'm wrong. i think there's an outtake called martha's wash day blues or something - sorry this is all off the top of my head, can someone back this up?). I always thought this song sounded out of place on D&P because of the drum machine beat (used on batman and GB more promenantly).

Hard to say who it was about, if anyone in particular. There were a lot of "ladies" around during that time. Mayte, Carmen, Leisl Auvante, Willow to name a few. I love the song. Very sexy. [Edited 5/14/09 19:34pm] TRUE BLUE

Someone already mentioned how it sounds similar to "Scandalous." The two songs also share the theme of gluttony: Insatiable: "Even if I wasn't thirsty I'd drink every drop.: And Scandalous: "I've got so much on the menu I can't wait."
He's objectifying women as food in these songs, and his appetite is out of control. It's a bit different from the uncontrollable lust P showed in the 80s. It's more about consumption here, not release.

He's talked a lot about "eating" women. It's not food. It's about eatin' and going through the laundry list of things to do . "23 positions in a one night stand". GET IT? I'll assume you were joking in your post.

"I've got so much on the menu" and "Even if I wasn't thirsty I'd drink every drop" are gluttonous expressions of P's sexual appetite. Gluttony, as in consuming more than one needs. The line in "If I Was Girlfriend" is different--it expresses the desire for intimacy, not a craving for excess.

What's to discuss? You GREATLY over thought a simple lyric, and an ongoing idea in Prince's music since early on. He's not comparing women AS food and wanting to consume them. Ridiculous! However, he has talked about wanting all of a woman, and doing everything to her possible (ergo: MENU). He's a horny bastard, and he loves him some sexin'. These two lyrics you pulled out of the air are just a couple in a long line of obsessive lyrics in Prince ballads. It's status quo, not a stand out moment.

Yeah, he is a horny bastard, he loves sexin', no argument there. But he does make the woman as food metaphor. In "Come" he actually says "Don't be surprised if I make you my daily meal." He's outright equating women with food.
