WHAT ???....THAT LITTLE ***** POOF !!!!....

WHAT ???....THAT LITTLE ***** POOF !!!!.....now i know that a lot of people are ignorant about most things in this life...music only being one of them but i must admit that i find this reply that me and some of my friends have received when telling people that i love the music of prince really anoying and offensive....you do sometimes come across people who know a bit about music and you can get a good reaction to telling them you love his genius but the majority dont have a clue....
.....i suppose that i shouldnt be annoyed at this reply too much because prince has , over the years , left himself open to this sort of narrow view because his image has tended to distract people from his musicial talent....in the uk, the video to his only number one single ' the most beautiful girl in the world' showed him dressed like your auntie and wearing more make-up than my ex wife !!!....but what i want to know is why is it when people say ' i like queen's music ' people dont say 'what ???...that big raving poofter ' !!!....or david bowie or anyone else you care to mention who happens to be homosexual or bi-sexual....!!!....
...
...as bad as it is to judge people because of their sexuality is... why does prince seem to be singled out for this ???...and the funniest thing is.....he isnt or has NEVER been homosexual in his life !!!!!....not that would bother me in the slighest....its his musicial talent that i love , the same with bowie or feddie mercury....what they do in the bedroom has nothing to do with me ....
....
...maybe i shouldnt let these comments annoy me but they are so wrong for so many reasons that it DOES annoy me and as time goes on, more than ever...
...
...
what do you all think about this and have you ever been annoyed by these narrow minded people...?

It used to bother me immensely, but then I realized that Prince doesn't care at all what people think of him, so why should I. He is obviously very confident in his talent and abilities (as well he should) and doesn't let the opinion of the ignorant masses detract from being true to himself. I appreciate him for who he is, despite "popular" opinion.

This must be a European term because we don't use it here in the USA. Either way, it's insulting to people in the Gay communty. You must consider the source when you're asking these questions. These fools obviously haven't seen Prince in the last 10 years, so why even care what they think or say? Prince doesn't. smile

People who would base what musics they like on someone's supposed sexual orientation aren't really worth my time anyway.

Hi Blackbob,

Seen your posts before and I can say you're more than level headed. This topic usually ends up with nonsense reactions like 'why can't you just drop the whole gay (poof) image thing'...

Before it descends into that, I must say over the years growing up in London (now 37) P. has been taken largely as nothing but a lightweight 'poof' and it annoys me too.

But what I do find more then fascinating is P's extravagance with his image. I find it mostly cool, but at times fucking ridiculous, i.e. lampshade outfit as you mention from 'most beautiful girl and the world' vid, mankini outfit from gangster glam, lovesexy cover etc etc.

What possesses a heterosexual (or at least not trans/sesuxal/gender etc etc) man to dress like this? It goes a bit beyond wearing your wife’s underwear. What's more how the fuck does he get away with in a black culture that's largely homophobic (before you get your 'I'm being anti-black' guns out on me, I'm quoting a gay black friend who's suffered enough, thanks). Does P have good taste? At times, hell yes. He can and does look super cool. But every now and then...

I love P being transgressive, but dressing like a part-transsexual - now there's a puzzle. Way to go man, whatever floats your boat P, whatever floats your boat.

It could just come down to taste. I find there's a way for men to express an exteriorisation of there feminine side in their image without it looking ridiculous. David Sylvain, new romantics, Lenny K., Russel Brand, Keith Richards, even bloody Robert Smith looks better than P on an off day. Okay wardrobe malfunctions are possible for everyone, but P looks like a twat fairy so much of the time.

If there's one area of P psyche I'd love to know more about, it's his need to put on those clothes and think he's such a badass hetro player come casanova??? (Just been watching the Lovesexy concert – loving those high thigh boots). In this regard, maybe - unfortunately he brings it on himself. Is it fair or just, no. Is it right it's linked to homosexulaity - no. But I think there are times when we can all look at P and cringe.

His stylistic choices brought him trouble as an opening act for The Rolling Stones' for two Los Angeles Coliseum shows in 1981, where he was infamously pelted with garbage while wearing bikini briefs, leg warmers, high-heeled boots, and a trench coat, eventually booed off the stage.

Got this from Wikipedia. He obviously doesnt giv a monkeys bout how people view him so we need not either.
Oh, and is he a Jehovahs Witness? smile

Well, there's always been a bit of a double standard for Prince. I've never understood why. I remember some of my sister's friends making comments about Prince's androgynous demeanor in the mid-80s. Then, you look at their record collection, and they listened to Poison and Cinderella. The guys in both acts looked more like women than Prince ever has. (Check out the cover of "Look What the Cat Dragged In" for example.) No one ever made comments about anyone in those groups being poofters.

My friend Mona, who isn't dumb by any mean, always thought Prince was wearing women's heels. I told her, finally, that they were boots with a heel. She seemed surprised and just said, "Oh....ok." And it ended there. Very uneventful. haha

Some people bring up the gay thing, but I remind them of all the poon he's had around him (!) in past years, and that he's never been seen with another guy. I think Prince has always been quite conscience of this and is really never seen out with just a guy. (It's also been noted he's never had a male protege.)

Of course these are the same people that only know "that 'strawberry beret song' or say "Oh I LOVE 'When Doves Cry'!", and then ask, while twirling their finger around with their shoulders hunched over and their forehead wrinkled up like sheets after a honeymoon, "Doesn't he go by that squiggley symbol thing?" "Uh no, dickhead, he's Prince, and has been again for almost a decade..."

Most fools are dismissive of him, thinking Purple Rain was the last album he ever made, and that he hasn't put out any music in the past 10+ years. They're shocked to see a shelf full of albums spanning 1978 to present.

Everyone will say how they feel in their life about their sexuality....

I am a proud heterosexual...because that is what I feel is the way that I want to live. I do not hate nor does Prince hate anyone that doesn't live as he chooses to live.

When you have different idea's about how U want to live...people near you need to know it. That is a major characteristic in a life.

The main thing is loyalty. Everyone deserves faithfulness...Bi-sexuality seems to condone the idea of splitting your heart between at least two people...How fulfilling can that ever be? Love is a whole hearted action, or it is less than whole. cool

The funniest reference to "poof" I've heard is in "Zorro the Gay Blade." falloff

Between "The MacArthur Park Suite" and "Zorro the Gay Blade," the Org is 'bout to send me to Amazon for a 1980s moment for real...

lol

Anyway, Prince brings it on himself. He's been wearing women's hairdos, clothing -- yes, even shoes, boots and heels -- and tons of makeup for most of his career. He's most comfortable singing in his falsetto. And, dang, "Under the Cherry Moon." The reasons to believe Prince to be other than strictly heterosexual are legion. Fans who swear by his orientation are just as amazing to me as those who swear they're certain he doesn't have any children... Um, OK... shrug Most of us here don't know Prince personally -- so, we wouldn't know.

Wendy and Lisa summed it up in their recent interview gay magazine 'Out'. They stated that he'd basically do anything to get attention and I suppose that this included the androgeny and cross dressing (and dressing in a mac and speedos! lol )

Personally, when people give me the 'isn't he gay' bollocks, I say 'So?' to which the other person is usually rendered mute. I sometimes go on to remind them that: a) Prince has been linked with more beautiful women than most blokes could even fantasise about
b) He's a musical fuckin' genius and that I don't give a shit what he wears or who he's shagging.

In 1987 when I was in college (a historically black college [HBCU] in America) I used to own a white, sleeveless shirt that hung pass by thighs. The front was completely covered with a Dirty Mind era Prince, holding a guitar and looking as freaky and funky as ever. One day, one of the finest girls on campus (And yes, it was widely agreed by males and females that she was one of the finest) made a "yuck" sound while we were standing in the hall. I knew that she was looking at and referring to my shirt. Because I was wearing very dark shades, I was able to ignore her, until she repeated even louder, "Yuck, Prince!!!" Since I was looking in another direction, I never turned to face her, but simply said, "That's why I wear this shirt." In her best "ghetto diva buck of the eyes and roll of the neck" she asked/demanded, "Why?" To which I replied, "To keep narrow-minded, ignorant muthafuckas like you away from me." Besides getting a big laugh from the other students in the hall, I never had to deal with her or others again.

Although it is a cliche', misery does love company. Most people are not courageous enough to be themselves or to do what they want to do, and they hate when others are strong or courageous enough to do what they want because it makes them feel less than. I've never understood discussing or dissin' something that you don't like. As time has passed, my belly has gotten too big for that shirt and my afro now has a sunroof, so rather than wear the shirt I keep very few family and friends in my immediate circle, and those are often the ones who are as free as I am.
