I agree with chocolatehandles. Prince is a great lyricist/poet.
No other musician that I know has ever moved me like Prince. I am intrigued how he is able to bear his soul through his lyrics and music and how he is able to open the minds and hearts of receptive listeners. He is able to connect with his audience on levels other artists can only dream of. I've said it before and I am saying it again Prince has a brilliant mind and a loving spirit. There are times when he doesn't come across as being brilliant or loving and that is when he lets his ego get in the way. But he is human and makes mistakes like the rest of us. The only difference, Prince is being scrutinized for his mistakes and shortcomings because he is on public display. love the one who is Love!

PEJ said: he might be a great poet but the best ever? I thought the book he put out last year would be filled with poetry but it was barely a glimpse of his poetic writings. bits and pieces of a lot of stuff we have either already seen or read or lyrics of songs we've already known. If he was the best poet ever that book could have been filled with a ton of material.
i agree! | |

Ok; I'll change "The Greatest Poet Ever" to "One of the Greatest ... Plus just like to add that a poem can be a song without a chorus, and if you read the lyrics minus the chorus you can see what I'm talking about.. Amen...I love Prince's emotions that come through his lyrics. Prince's heart on paper is beautiful. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Some of his lyrics are very good poetry. Why do teachers always bang on about what they know and are safe with. they always refer to the published poets, we are fed mindless lessons in english of repeating the same ideas. study shakespeare, etc its the same for art, students in GB are told who is a master rather finding out and discovering that for themselves. IMO Prince is a fantastic poet, his structure and rythmn is very good. He has produced so much work that we are now starting to see repetition in rhymes and themes. He needs to check out his thesaurus more often. Dear Prince please stop saying 'pennies' and 'scatter' in the same sentence or 'im a star' or 'best i/she/he etc ever had' Keep up the excellent writing. I for one think you are a fine poet. walk with crooked shoes www.myspace/syblepurplelishous

Personally, I think it's one of his weakest areas, but he does seem to do a lot better in this department when he purposely writes a song for the message or story he wants to convey (several Emancipation, Rainbow Children, and 3121 songs, for example). Most of the time, I think he just likes to have fun with the music -- the words being an afterthought.

Being an English teacher and a writer, I have read all of the poets that you listed. I have also written papers about Prince's lyrics, presented lectures about his lyrics at various "scholarly conferences," and that is while I have, myself, published poetry, fiction, and essays in over 200 journals, newspapers, and two anthologies. So, while I don’t think that Prince is the greatest poet, he is a lyrical powerhouse whose work has been creative as well as poignant and insightful, especially when you consider that his work is representative of the post-Civil Rights era African American, grappling with otherness and place.

He's good
2night we'll make love until the world stops turning U're small but very strong U move like a cat: quickly but gentle So insane He caressed her in her eyes and licked her abdomen She shivered with delight Over and over she nibbled his ear U'd think it was wrong 2 have so much fun He held her tightly until it almost hurt But his hips, they moved so slowly She wanted 2 stop breathing U can feel every curve of her womanhood U can see every thought in his brain A submarine slowly moves through the virgin sea Oh so slowly She wants 2 stop breathing U... U can feel every curve She squeezes tighter as the submarine goes deeper in depth Into the unnavigated territory A smile, ever so slight, appears on his face as she starts 2 cry Until they come, 2gether, slowly They wish 4 somethin', as if they could see a parallel future in the sea They do not speak They only stare out the moment in time

OOOhhh you are so right!
Prince is a great poet and probably the best ever. His poetry is fucking amazing... People who don't see it don't understand the simplicity of it and how it works. He is clever and although his poetry is not structured it doesn't make it any less great. It's like Spike Milligan is as good as Keats. That is the amazing thing about poetry it's not about being the deepest or the most prolific - it is more of an X Factor quality that Prince has by the bucket load. You ask people to analyse Bob dylans lyrics and they can't because they don't actually mean anything. They are empty and banal. They just sound good. Prince is the opposite. People think he is light and fluffy pop like Kiss, or gimicky like Head. But if you break down those songs and analyse them, they are really clever songs. People take Prince's music too literally. Like the song Head is obviously about oral sex but it's also about how words can have two meanings and how a banal word like head can also be provocative and that's what also makes it funny. Shut up already, damn.

Have you read the Ning Nang Nong.. that is definately childish rambling but it is amazing and funny. I have not heard of Ning Nang Nong. It sounds funny. I'll check it out. I agree with you about Dylan. I'd like to put up a better argument in that factor but I really... no can't do it, not with Bob Dylan. Now Prince's lyrics... music ... the whole thing.. keeps me fascinated. And entertained. They are, as we all know, are extremely seductive. He can talk/sing that sex better than anybody else on earth. And he doesn't have to be crude about it. Which is really really sexy, in of itself. He can be bold without being crude. That's quite something. Like "Get Off" or "U dream I scream inside U" just to name a two out of ....whew how many? Also Elixer, is another fine example. Immersion is just ...divine. Perhaps not the raw oral sexuality in song and prose ...but it's very sensual with such a harmonious feel ... overall and that to me makes it verrrrry sexy. The prose and music are very beautiful, spiritual, soothing. His songs can also be side splittingly hilarious. For instance I heard the song "Movie Star" for the first time very recently. That was some funny stuff. That was classic ... absolutely hilarious! lolol. I still get tickeled just thinking about it. And then there's the other aspect of the songs that have that spiritual and cryptic edge ...where people are hooked on it but they're not sure what it means. And the ones that might have an idea of what it means are scared to say. lol. That's genius. What makes me wonder on some of the music and prose in that vein is if he really realizes ... what he's touching on? Please don't misunderstand... I don't mean any offense and I'm not suggesting by any means that he doesn't know what he's doing. No... not like that.. it's just ....intriguing ...some of the things he speaks in his prose...hint at very deep things, mysteries, and it makes me wonder. How did he know that? Did he really intend to speak or hint of this thing or that mystery? I'm not saying he's not intelligent .. I'm simply saying that most people don't know these things. Therefore, I find it intriguing. I don't know, maybe it's a coicidence. But it's interesting. Like the segue on the album Come, just before the song Orgasm...for instance. Or was it just meant to sound sexy and ...not really trying to touch on any of the mysteries. I do wonder about those things ... sometimes. I don't have any complaints about Prince's prose. Please don't misunderstand. Prince artistry captures and holds my attention with no problem. And I can write a little prose and poetry myself...believe it or not. I'm not too bad. I have to say ,..Prince might be my muse. He inspires a lot of poetry. That might sound funny. Lemme see how can I put this... oh well. He just does. The deep calls to the deep ..so to speak. He's so artistic ..one can't help but be inspired artistically...or creatively. The various concepts ...ideas ... the moods and tones he sets with his music. It's all very inspirational and beautiful. Not to mention Prince appears to be intoxicatingly sensual., I was merely saying I'm not much of a Bob Dylan fan....personally. (no offence to any Bob Dylan fans out there)... But Bob just doesn't flip my switch. Now Prince. Oh yeah .....now he's the switch master! lol. that doesn't sound right does it? be a great title for something though... lol. Joke for the day Q. What is a mixed feeling? A. Seeing your Mother-In-Law backing off a cliff... in your new car!
Q. What is the difference between a G-Spot and a Golf ball? A. a guy will actually search for a golf ball. [Edited 7/9/09 14:30pm] this is the time of the first fast.
