If the wind blew every petal from your precious red rose
Would U be afraid of what U'd find inside? When I'm alone in my room I can't stop dreaming about U, dreaming about U When I'm alone in my room I can't stop dreaming about U, dreaming about U And every time I do what I need 2 do I can't stop dreaming about U, dreaming about U Revolving around every word that is spoken Like the planets around the sun I want U Your tongue is a great persuader Yeah, U got me sold And when I'm alone in my room just watching a rose I dream about U, I dream about U When I'm alone in my room, yeah I can't stop dreaming about U When I'm alone in my room, baby, baby I can't stop dreaming about U, dreaming about U And every time I do what I need 2 do I can't stop dreaming about U, dreaming about U When my sane twin reigns Claiming your aim is 2 maim my subconscious into being with U I dream about U Betting on the notion that if my lustier twin prevails Like the ruins of Rome, I'll lie helpless at your feet Yeah, when I'm alone I dream about U, I dream about U I dream about U, baby When I'm alone in my room I dream about U, my baby I dream about U, U, U (And here we stand) And here we stand amidst your core (U) Like the petals on this rose I adore (U) The inside (The inside) If the inside is kind Kind in a sense that one would come from all And the wish that U wish will come true if U call But if not, (U will fall) U will fall And I'll still be alone (Just dreaming about U) With this ball in my stomach just dreaming about U (Dreaming about U) I don´t know if he´s the greatest poet but ... Forever in my life...

He is 1 on of many great poets. His writings though are very unique to me, and i connect to them in a special way that doesn't happen easily for me. Poetry is a very personal thing, so of course the way you connect with it is personel as well.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to take the piss, but REALLY!!!??? My grin for the day is credited to you chocolatehandles. Being an articulate English teacher, I can tell you that Prince would not be discussed in an English class. Read Whitman, Yeats, e.e. cummings, John Donne, Emily Dickinson, etc., if you want to read GOOD poetry.

Some of the lyrics do sound like poetry, and it does sound nice.
But he's more a musician/lyricist than considered poet.

yes, I love how he can take a simple phrase like "you're always on my mind" and complicate it into "there's never a time I find that you don't ever cross my mind"
or take a whimsical expression like "for you I would lasso the moon!" and make it sound as if he had actually done such a thing "Ur the reason I lassoed a rope 'round the moon!" or the pure genius & originality that doesn't need music at all to be a classic... "baby baby baby what's it gonna be baby baby baby is it him or is it me?" Or not knowing if he's talking to a prospective lover or a guy competing for a girl, or both, neither? "It really don't matter who you get with Cuz it just ain't meant 2 b It really don't matter Cuz you never shoulda woulda, Ever coulda been like me" My Legacy

we weren't discussing notable poets ( Greatest Poet might be a stretch but if he moves you that way wonderful ).... he does have a great sense of word play
with thought provoking lyrics/poetry if that's what one wants to call it. who would think Tupac's lyrics would be studied in a collegiate setting? ( and no I am not a Tupac fan) so before the verbal snobbery ensues who knows how Princes material will be viewed in the future. [Edited 5/13/09 20:33pm]

[Edited 5/13/09 20:33pm] Thank you utopia7 But don't worry if some Orgers can't 'see and feel' what we can from Prince's words, well then it's their loss. And imaging how interestng and proactive a discussion would be if a lecturer brings in one of Princes songs for discussion - that will wake up the class!

"it's got a funny way of stopping the juice" you have to read their teenage poetry. But they hid it from their mums and it was never recovered!

But I have read his lyrics and without the music to me it's poetry. I'm glad I won't be bumping into some of you soon.... Plus it's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Yes, I agree. "I sincerely wanna fuck the taste out your mouth" rivals any couplet by Wordworth, or iambic pentameter from Shakespeare.

Aaaaaand there it is. Ha..I know. All she needs, though, is some interaction with real, live people. She'll be fine after that.

The conventional definition of poetry is a imaginative writing often with a regular rhythm. I think the "rhythm" in Princes' writings comes alive in the music. Not to say that there isn't rhythm in some of the writings alone, but you can't seperate the two with him in my opinion. To be able to put the two together is such a beautiful complexity.
