True, Prince is more diverse in his musical palette, but there are emotions and textures that DM creates in songs like "Halo", "Waiting for the Night", and "In Your Room" that reach a depth and honesty that I have rarely heard Prince explore, and I've been a fan of both for many years...

I find it odd cause it always sounds like theatrics to me from Depeche Mode. Like they're playing with style.

Even songs like Blasphemous Rumors don't come close to Anna Stesia or Theres Others Here with Us from Prince.

Maybe it's just that I always compare DM to The Smiths and The CUre, and when you consider the depths of despair one can convey, it's kind of unfair to make that comparison lol

I do the same with Prince's ballads vs Madonna, MJ, and Janets. Prince's older ballads seem very sincere whereas most of the time, his peer's ballads seem like theatrics.

I pretty much agree w Imago's take on this. However, I do feel that DM have managed to feel like they're still in the game whereas P seems to be neither out nor in...
U know, there's "out" like TRC or NEWS, where it's like: take it or leave it, I'm doing what I feel like. & then there's the last few albums where it's like: I'm trying really hard to be relevant but if it doesn't work Ill pretend I don't care...

Ya know, I never saw it. Then my sister made me sit and watch a bunch of videos one day. biggrin He looked so good when he had the long hair and goatee.
He cracks me up in concert, tho, when he sheds the shirt and turns around and wiggles his ass for the audience.

i think that prince has gotten into a comfortable groove whereas he is enjoying jamming as a musician and appreciating the music of others.

i don't think he's lost that edge though, where he's without surprises, and for some reason, we're always kept on our toes as to what he'll do next

as for myself, i'll still support him for years to come

That fits with my original comparison: P won't/can't do those old cringe-worthy moves any more (and they were always cringeworthy, in both cases!),
For sure, Dave looks like a bit of a self-parody, but no more than he has always done and certainly not because of his age or a sense of being worn out.
For some reason I feel that P has become a bit lost on stage over the last decade (alleged injury anyone?) - I, personally, am happy that that's led him to depend more on his guitar, but the thesis still holds...

I have no idea who Depeche Mode is...so I have no thoughts on them whatsoever. I do have a thought on the statement that I highlighted because I disagree with it completely! I'd gladly testify in a court of law that Prince is doing everything BUT rocking the oldtimer revisiting his glorious past route!

I can say that because I know, a nice long stroll down that Memory Lane would do his ass some good! nod

he's been on memory lane since the musicology tour and even since the jam of the year tour with all the prince songs in the set lists instead of prince songs. now he's on auto pilot on memory lane since the musicology tour with new songs hardly getting played but we'll get thousand of songs from the 80's.

Frankly it's time he GETS OFF memory lane and comes 2 the present day
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

To me Depeche Mode is making new music i still listen to and enyoy.
Their new album is pretty good.

While i like Lotusflow3r, I mosty listen and enjoy old Prince music.

I still think MPLSOUND sounds like a really bad Prince impersonator recorded in 84 by someone in Czechoslovakia.
maybe by these guys

It sounds dated in a bad bad way.

Are we talking in concert or in general? I thought we were talking in general but if we're talking in concert...there's a damn good reason for him to be playing his hits...in spite of his repeated insistence...just to sell tickets...that it's for last time! That's because his present day output has simply NOT been up to par enough...to sell concert tickets on...even he KNOWS it!

To me, Prince is far more present in culture than Depeche Mode... in both awards, performances, radio, tv, movie references, comedy references, press, and his new songs get played a little bit when they first come out (does new Depeche Mode get airplay? I'm not sure but it might be the case)... Prince also started in 1978, right?

Is there a Depeche Mode presence that I'm not aware of?

Umm, yeah!...
DM's first big hit was in 1980 but they started making music 1977. They've had continued success since then which has only increased with time.
You need to get some perspective beyond th US. Where I live no one knows P's done anything since Emancipation... .

Part of this may have to do with '84 and P reaching mammoth proportions he could never re-create. DM seem to have continued to grow in terms of recognition, success and sales so that their career still seems to be building rather than stagnating.

Thoughts, anyone?

That's a similar case 2 Michael Jackson. He could never re-create the success of Thriller, although he tried his hardest. Anyway, Prince's success can't b compared 2 Depeche Mode's because they're 2 totally different cases. Prince hasn't had a hit single on the charts since 1995, but at least he still puts out good music! cool

-----
Prince does not need a hit single when he has a whole 3 CDS that are sitting on the chart today in the top 20. It seems that he is relevant to those that want to be in touch with reality.
