If Prince made an album in the vein of Dirty Mind or Controversy again, with an updated sound, I would explode with happiness.

sad, but probably true. i miss the 80's yes, i said it. 80's music in general (all music-not just Prince) was the bomb- and im able to remember it seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

Hes been doing it for a few years now. Just because he don't say 4 letter words does not mean it ain't that "Dirty Mind" This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

... I would be a fan of his music again
Seriously, He has not done anything since that era that compares. If you "hear" it in his current music it's because you WANT to hear it. Reality is it just doesn't exist currently. *sigh* ~When you understand why you dismiss all other gods, then you will understand why I dismiss yours~

He wouldn't because he's not the same song writer anymore.
I still love all of the music - it's like I've grown up with Prince since 1983 and each album reminds me of that part of my life. So to answer the "What if" question, I'd be disappointed because it would be a backward step, IMHO. We are all different people now and we just need to get on with life. Remember people, it's not life and death, it's music to enjoy! [Edited 5/10/09 6:57am] "Grace": "Do you always keep lingerie in your glove box?"

It would be called a Middle Life Crisis. Not quite sure if that would be a good thing as most always they turn into a living nightmare. Prince's Sarah

Doing 1 song here or there doesn't really compare, but I hear what your saying He has so many songs that it's hard to tell if it's a 'vault' song pulled out for a new album But I don't think he has the circle of people and life that would inspire that kind of Dirty Mind/Controversy music

The One U Wanna C is a very good song and reminds one of When U Were Mine. That's a good comparison because When You Were Mine illustrates what set albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy apart from today. The One U Wanna C is very good but feels rather conventional whereas When U Were Mine is more unconventional and edgy. Prince has continued to develop his sound, but he rarely makes sounds these days that are as exciting as around 1980.

Need i remind you all of FUNK or No more Candy? He PROOVED he can still do it (FUNK is nastier and rougher then ALL of Dirty Mind) and ironically, those songs were to tell you guys to STFU! Its not hard to figure out why you trapped people don't get satisfied anymore...re-listen to those songs. and then when you done, slap Love on. I'd be happy with it. But he'd have to do it musically AND lyrically. I certainly don't want to hear music like "Uptown" or "Let's Work" with lyrics about the New Translation and jehovah. (Read: "Spirituality" in lieu of "Sexuality" at 3121 Vegas).

I'm tired of people living in the past and wanting Prince to stay there with them. If "No More Candy 4 U" ain't "Dirty Mind" sounding enough, than I don't know what is. It seems that some folks would rather keep Prince in a nice little purple eighties box, prancing around in his drawers and cussing!
No thanks. Obviously he is living the life he wants and making music that pleases himself. We're all fortunate to have him still around making music. He doesn't owe us anything. If you want "Dirty Mind", pull out your record or better yet, make an album that sounds just like it yourself! Release Yourself

I'm not trapped in the past, I spend 90% of my time listening to his recent stuff. There are several really good songs on Dirty Mind and Controversy just like there are on say 3121 and Planet Earth, but when I mention Dirty Mind and Controversy my empasize is not on the compositions themselves, it's on the edginess of the sound. He's made many better songs than on these albums, but the exciting sound on these albums is what sets them apart. Prince has on many occasions come up with exciting sounds throughout all of his career, but almost never AS exciting as around 1980. On the other hand, his composition skills and genre diversity have of course increased significantly since that time. MPLSound has an edgy and interesting sound here and there. The problem with MPLSound is not that the sound is boring, it's that there are no real highlight compositions.

I agree. I don't think Prince could ever go back to being so earthy again.
He could try and recapture it but it's such a pure sound and one that was made in that moment of time. He could never recapture it, even if he tried. I think we all have to get over that... Shut up already, damn.

Well..he actually did it, he updated that sound. And we're still complaining... That's the problem, he updated it. It's fine to update a sound if the current mainstream sound is great but not when the mainstream is a bunch of shit hop foolishness. just listen for example to The One U Wanna C - that's updated sound of When U Were Mine..
I don't hear it but I don't have a problem with "The One U Wanna C". At least it has no shit hop influences in it whatsoever. Hell, I'd take corny stuff like "Do U Lie" over shit hop. Andy is a four letter word.

every song on dirty mind is great .
when you were mine is one of the best ever melodies written in pop music. simple but effective or killer song uptown which sounds like the begging of disco house in a way or punk rocker sister. or the amplified solo on gotta broken heart again

I'll break with my usual and say I don't think -- with the exception of the aforementioned "The One You Wanna See" -- a return to that form would be good. Sonically? Maybe. But, lyrics-wise? No... Something creepy about Prince trying to re-adopt the naivete of that period, given his age. It would be similar to Janet Jackson's failing -- she's stuck, lyrically, at Control two decades later.
