Well Folks...He is special

Like a lot of you, I sat cringing through that Tavis interview, it was embarassing to see a grown man reduced to such fawning. But, while I was watching, I also thought, "what if I were at the local AM/PM and minding my own business, I look up and see Prince?" I don't think i'd act much different than Tavis. I've been a fan so long, been amazed so long. I know that we all have a tendency to think "who the hell does Prince think he is" but on the other hand, the man is, well...special.

Well... the difference is that Tavis has a job to do as an interviewer, and he wasn't doing it. He might as well have bent over and started sucking Prince's dick at that point. One imagines that people who act like Tavis are the sorts of people that Prince surrounds himself with in general. Yes men. Men and women who always tell Prince he's a genius, and that everything he does is flawless. It seems to be a pitfall of artists who happen to become filthy rich. They surround themselves with people who defer to them at all times, and they lose perspective. I've heard the same of Stevie Wonder.

See... like this here is an example of what I was talking about. Prince is a prophet sent from god? That is just culty and gross.

Stevie surrounded by sycophants?? Explain. Anyway, I agree with you, if Prince was really confident, he wouldn't need all of that validation. It's not good for the soul to tell the truth. For example, I'm a performer, and let me tell you, I have felt maybe a thousandth of what these artists get and it's heady stuff and something that must be kept in check. I do wonder if maybe Tavis was worried about grilling prince so hard that he loses any future possibility of interviews, he certainly wasn't being a journalist. On one hand, Prince or any artist, doesn't do himself any good being surrounded by yes men, but on the other, the man is truly special. I hate to say it but if I looked up and saw him I'd crap my pants and I'm a grown man. Pathetic ain't it?

You mean the dawning of the age of aquarius...age of aquarius...aquarius...a-qua-ri-us? No end is really the end in a temporal sense, but just another beginning kinda song-sing?

I do not believe the world ends as far as human survival goes in 2012. It's hard to know what to make of the meaning although it has to do with the sun being aligned with the center of the galaxy. Our solar system sits on the edge of the galaxy. As our Solar Systen travels around the disk as a whole...In 2012 Our Sun will sit near the center.

I believe it's the human awareness of time as an illusion that removes the overall concept of time, although for order we will still need time to maintain appointments. Nobody is dead. cool

i dunno. i've always hoped if something like that were to happen, i'd be able to acknowledge him with the common respect i'd have for anyone and not act all starstruck, but when you're a fan of someone for years and you've invested so much awe and admiration in someone's work for a long time, it would be hard not to fawn over him. i think part of it would be how he approaches his fans. what was that oprah quote they used on "30 rock" recently - "you teach people how you want them to treat you"? would prince treat fans more like, "come on now, just treat me like a regular human being" or would he be more like "damn STRAIGHT i'm a superstar icon pop idol, now get on that knee and kiss the ring, bitchez!"

i dunno. i'm awkward around celebrities anyway, even if i find myself around a famous person i'm not personally crazy about. how do you make casual conversation with someone you just met when you read about their sex life on dlisted the night before, you know? eww.

Yes, but more importantly just how short are you!? I'd fall to pieces too wink

As for Tavis (what kinda name is that? You Yanks have some good'uns that's for sure: Chuck, Chip, etc) what grabbed my poop was how he held the album all the way through. Fawning git. I was cringing mildly as he waved it about and used it to press his points: of which there were none.

Well Electricity3121 sure thinks Prince is the Second Coming that's for sure. Does he know that idolisation is frowned upon? Someone should get him and mzexyqueen(?) together. The wedding would happen in minutes (but can there be three in a marriage?).

I really don't know how I'd react. I've been around people who were somewhat famous before, and the guys i was around I usually ignored. I didn't want to come across as a kiss ass. Oddly enough, those particular gentleman, almost to a man, didn't really even have a problem once I got to know them. Prince on the other hand, well, if Elvis were alive and I were to meet him I can't say I'd act normal. Prince is not quite that dear and special to me but he's damn close. Who knows, I might ignore him altogether. I've heard enough of how he treats people to not want to be treated badly. But on the other hand, he's not just some celebrity, he's....Prince. As I said, I believe that adulation is destructive, absolutely. Not good for a persons sense of reality. It's destroyed many men. There should be a balance, Elvis and many others were destroyed by all these parasites who just could not level with the man. It's like being a boss, everyone acts different with the boss, the boss gets drunk on the power and often, it gets to be a ridiculous sense of entitlement.

Agreed. It's hero worship at its worst. Even Prince said, "Never meet your heroes, they'll always let you down." As much as I'd love to sit and play "Purple Rain" or "Raspberry Beret" or "The Arms of Orion" on the piano with him, I'd probably be let down.

We have this view of him (exaggerated by Electricity3121's example of almost unhealthy fanaticism), and in person he's probably a lot different.

But Tavis knows him, and he still fawns. That was sucking up to me. For a layman to meet him on a whim, THEN you can fawn and get tongue tied a bit. It's expected.

I agree with the culty and gross part. Prince shits and pisses like everyone else, he just uses more expensive (and earth friendly) toilet paper. I mean really....imagine Prince sitting on the pot, reading People or something while he pinches off last night's tofu. Not so godly now, is he? wink

Because he's not. Just because someone conveys love (which is limited these days), and unity (which is so NOT what he's doing anymore) doesn't make them a prophet.

Being a prophet is a heavy thing, and to me, it's a real thing, and someone like Prince ain't in that category. Yes, yes, he talented, etc etc. blah blah. We've heard it, we've seen it, we've paid for it over and over.

But a Prince the Prophet? Even he would say no to that. But then again he did declare himself to be "music", which is pride at its best. Lucifer got thrown out of heaven for a similar headset. (And if he's God's prophet, he'd known that pride comes before a fall, which means he's prime for it sometimes.)

Let's keep it real. And let's also understand what a prophet is, and that Prince is not one.

Also, the Bible says that the age of the Prophets is over.

So, the source material, which is what told you that Prophets existed in the first place, says that Prince is not a Prophet.

Prince has some strange ability to draw people to him, even those that claim not to like him can't seem to 'not be interested' it's weird. When I first saw him in person back in the 80's I was amazed how he gives the impression that he is 6ft tall and he barely would come to my shoulders in real life. He's got that male/female thing going on that makes him attractive to both sexes and that Gemini -two sides personality, and the 'what color is he' mystery. I'm just confused I tell ya!! eek
