How Cool was the NUDE tour?

He had the hair.
He had the songs.
He had the outfits.
His stripped down sound was fresh and funky.

I love the NUDE tour. biggrin

The good thing about the Nude Tour:
Lots of Soundboard Bootlegs.

The not-so-good thing about the Nude tour:
The sterile, sample-heavy musicianship in the
performances and the ho-hum set-lists.
Though, Bambi was dusted off for the tour,
so it had that going for it.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I tend to agree with you there...it wasn't a patch on 88 for me..

Ditto, I went to 14 of the London gigs plus one night in Birmingham but I would trade them all for an extra night at the Lovesexy tour.

saw a lot of the london shows. loved 'bambi', loved 'partyman', loved longer versions of 'purple rain', loved 'the question of u', but 4 me personally, out of the 6 or 7 different P tours i've seen live, this was a fair way down the list. (the filmed shows from spain and japan were cool tho') !

I didn't see it live, only on video. I enjoyed it much more than the Musicology tour which was also a "greatest hits" tour, and I did see that show live twice.

To me (only have been 2 at the time of the tours), I feel this tour fits in perfectly for the Prince history of tours and phases etc etc. The fact that he built up to the Lovesexy tour extravanganza and before getting on to the Diamonds and pearls/ prince era, there was (to me) a need of going back to basics, much as it was supposedly a financial based tour on P's part, it still rocks!!

It was like Prince going back to the pre horns era which is a foundational aspect of his and the opening segments of the shows up to Kiss were just a complete funky rave! THE FUTURE>1999>HOUSEQUAKE>SEXY DANCER

I appreciate the game boyz are typical ealry 90's tack and that this tour is put down as a least favourite of many folk but through a history of threads I have found that a lot of people favourite renditions of live songs, have come from this tour!

I have some raw footage (and also the later edited footage) of the Nude Tour in Rotterdam or somewhere. It's about 10 minutes long. I had/have some boots of the sound checks. "Did I say we'd do the show once today? Psyche! Here we go!"

But I've never seen the whole concert.

However great Lovesexy was, it was nice to see Prince drop all the baggage for the Nude tour. I think he may have been in danger of going overboard if he'd continued in the same vein so it was certainly a welcome reinvention.

As far as the arrangements, it's definitely worn better than Lovesexy, I guess the reliance on electronic percussion & processing from '88 has 'marked' the sound of Lovesexy. Although there were samples and loops in Nude, to me they aren't as core to the sound as those in the Lovesexy tour.

Although there's little more than a year between the end of Lovesexy & the start of Nude, to me they feel like they're from different generations. Having Michael B in the band was definitely a big part of that change. cool

Nude tour at Gentofte stadium, june 1990... I have seen about 16 concerts (1987-2007), but Nude is the worst Prince concert I have seen,

Prince played a very uninspired set, outdoor in bright daylight, only about an hour long, the Batman songs didn't work, especially Batdance was horrible,

The Game Boys (lol) - they did their best to get the crowd in spirit for the show, but they didn't succeed,

I like the Tokyo show better, which I later saw on tv, The Question Of U, Partyman these were actually great,

but NUDE tour is still one of his worst tours if you compare with other tours,

SOTT, Lovesexy, Diamonds & Pearls, Act II, Ultimate Gold, London O2 these were so much better. I haven't seen Parade or Musicology but I think these are better too.

this is just imo, sorry to disagree. wink

Yes...that Tokyo show was the best in my opinion. I had a bootleg at the time and that performance made me a huge fan. Saw the Lovesexy show in 1988 but enjoyed the Nude bootleg much more. Was really amazed how the audience seemed to know every song and danced the entire time. It looked totally different than the crowd at the DC Lovesexy show, who only stood up when the Purple Rain songs were played. I think at that point the masses (esp. in the U.S.) started to dislike Prince.

I agree, the Gentofte Stadion show was particularly uninspired.
Saw 4 other shows on the tour, 3 of them towards the end of the tour which were way better.
But Nude tour is still at the bottom on my list of tours.
Not because of the stripped - down thing, that could've been cool, but having come to know him as this really passionate performer up until that point, his heart just didn't seem as much in it this time around.

14 shows?! eek Wow. biggrin

I was lucky to be able to see kick-off show in the US. Of note at this show - Prince took a pretty good tumble while sliding down a ramp. Pissed, he threw his guitar down and left the stage. In seconds, there were a bunch of dudes wiping down the ramp as if to remove some imaginary moisture that caused Prince to fall.
P came out a short while later and continued to perform, but it could have been the beginning and the end of the Nude Tour that night.

The concerts were way to short (about 90 minutes incl. the encores...). Some of the planned open-airs in germany were cancelled because of poor ticket sales, some took place in half-empty stadiums. The indoor-shows were ok concerning the atmosphere. I missed the horns badly...

Like xtra said, it was way 2 short! have been in munich back than for the concert and the olympic stadium was only half filled - kind of strange because this was his best time concerning airplay and hits on tv or radio.

a lot of my friends have been with me for their first (and obviously their last) prince concert and still nearly 20 years later they tell me, how poor the concert was. when i try to tell them, that normally a p-concert is one of the best things you could see, they just laugh because of the nude-tour.

highlight for me was while waiting out of the stadium he drove by with sheila-e in a big cadillac - whe really went crazy.

Oh man i hear ya... I was there as well and Munich 90 must have been the worst concert in his whole career imho sad

Because tickets sales were so poor for this show the decided "last minute" to place the stage "diagonally" !!! inside the stadium.
Because of this action all the tribune ticket holders had to exchange their tickets at the box office right before the show confused
Long waiting queues and very bad organisation resulted in an overall bad vibe even before the show had started.

The concert itself was just lame and really really bad! It was only "funky" during the last 10-15 minutes of the show or so!
Right next to us a very agressive rowdy was beating up a guy in the audience, who had done nothing and had no chance to defense himself because he was totally stucked in the masses sad

Jeez - it was the most horrible prince concert experience i ever had...

And like you, people still tell me how bad that show was and that P is "no good live"!

But how to explain to them that this is not true after they have experienced this nightmare? lol

I went to seen the Nude tour in Rotterdam. It was the worst Prince concert I've ever been to (went to see most of his Dutch concerts, starting with SOTT, which was the best, followed by Lovesexy and ONA).
First there was some weak opening act (some girl from Australia I remember), and when it was Prince's turn to perform, some VERY dark clouds gathered above the arena. It started raining soon after, and the show was shortened to about 60 minutes. At some point Prince got a big splash of water on his head....we where affraid that he would get electrocuted.

oh yeah - i can remember waitng a very long time because of the change of the stage ... - and all got really angry about it .. and after the last song (without any encore as i think) he went into the caddillac and drove of the stadium ...

so the only thing to remeber was him droving by before the concert and sitting just one seat away of thomas gottschalk (a very famous german showman) whome at these days i liked a lot (not anymore!!).

when I tell my friends nowadays that I have been to p-concert i.e in zurich, where he played for nearly 4 hours and even played an aftershow at the kaufleuten, they still don't trust me .. sad

a few of them i could make to come to london with me for the earth tour and even that concert couldn't beat there feelings.

I think nowadays u really have to be a hard-core p-fan to still love his music and his concerts ... what a shame

The Nude Tour holds a special place in my heart because it was the first time he performed in Ireland to a massive crowd in Cork. And my first time seeing him live. We hired a mini bus and 16 of us went down and had a ball. Granted it was a bit lackluster but for me I near cried all through the show.

Yes I am a wuss. lol
