I would love to have seen Prince allow open access to lotusflow3r: without a fee.

Then, offer all music/ videos etc at a reasonable price. That way casual fans could've bought the new albums and choose not to but any other goods. Diehards could then have the option to buy addtional material.

Example: lotusflow3r, mplsound, elixer. Separate dowloads. And/ or physical discs for shipping. Downloads, such as the Coachella clips, available as stand alone purchases.

I feel sure that if this had been the case Prince would've cleared up with sales of his present release, and diehards would've probably bought addtional d/loads, of more than even the $77 joining fee.

I imagine an easy to navigate, sober looking website, accessable to all for the main part. There you find news, fan polls, regular free streams and downloads, pictures, artwork and other free things to share.

Then there would be a part where you have to register and can acces music you pay for.

...

That would've been great. I'm a little tired of the concept that everything is behind closed doors. A person who happens to stop by meets a black void with nothing interesting to look at. Same with NPG Music Club, all one could do was stare at a closed gate or pay. At this point I feel no rush to join and part with 77 dollars given what's been said about the website so far.

The Target deal seems to have been a good idea, I also think he should have an iTunes-like store on his website, accesible for all of course, with lots of material at decent prices. Then there could be a vip section for the hardcore fans where you pay for access to some exclusive stuff.

Good point. Free promotion.

I didn't quite understand why Prince performed on American Idol years ago but I now I get it. Social networks, American Idol, etc are the MTV of today's generation. Prince pobably doesn't like these avenues but they seem to be becoming increasingly popular with today's youth and the tech savvy.

This is the issue for him, so it seems he doesn't want to be associated with social websites. Perhaps it's the reputation of myspace. The news area is good enough I guess for when " he feels like" performing.who knows

why not offer a little extra incentive to the diehards, rather than just an album download of something we're going to buy at target anyway? he knows his fans well enough to know that we're going to want the physical version as well as what would be on the official site. it would have been cool to have a remixed/re-edited version on the site, so there'd be two different versions of the music to plow through. SOMEthing that would give the site something unique to offer. right now, there's next to nothing.

But my point is a lot of die-hards didn't join the web-site for various reasons. It's almost like saying if you don't join my web-site and jump through 7 hoops of answering a secret riddle and a whole bunch of clickty-click in addition to paying $77 your not a real fan.

Now if he had a retail section on the website where items could be purchased like the fictional "4th disk" or t-shirts or whatever without joining that would be different. Then the fictional "4th disk" could have come as freebie as a part of the subscription for those who joined, as well as sold independantly at retail price for those who are die-hard fans but didn't want to join the web-site. I could get on board with the idea.

yeah, that sounds like a fine option. really, at this point, anything that motivates me to type that site's URL into my browser is a good idea to me. sigh

IMHO, it wouldn't hurt to have a less graphic website.

I know Prince likes to create his own worlds and push things graphicly (is that a word?), but not everyone gives a hoot about that.

Give an option to step out of the looking glass to get the goods. It just might make it a little easier to make goods available.

Updating the site, I don't know, weekly, would at least make it seem more relevant.

Would you wanna see and pay for downloads and printed CD's of all his work plus unreleased material?

Sure, as long as it wasn't too repetative.
I'm firmly planted in denial

Well, considering the majority of opinion here I think we can say that Prince could make some changes to the website and it may just turn out fine.

Something similar to the Target deal

Record stores are becoming scarce every passing day...

You guys always bitch about the website until the day he launches his tour and you all have a chance at the best seats in the house. Isn't THAT the most predictable website perk by now?

Through the record stores. And none of this "exclusive" bullshit. I prefer spending my money at independent owned record stores, not big business giants.

Imago

He seems to dislike the idea of releasing all of it in mp3 format on the Internet.

I think if he sold his music as .iso image files, it would be the best of both worlds.

We as fans could burn those to disk, and Prince could release as many CDs as he wanted in what's basically CD format. Fans would have to rip the CDs to mp3 (which they could do with his CDs anyways) if they wanted mp3s.

My personal preference though is that he just release them as .mp3s and do a deal with itunes to release them there as well. They guy could make a killing.
