I am somewhat of a sucker for Graffiti Bridge, the song that is. Allright its corny, cheesy, over the top stuff. The final song of a musical, with utterly simplistic and naive lyrics... But.. I just love how he 'handles' it. The arrangement being a total wall of sound: he throws everything into the mix....Clare fishers orchestrations, Sheila E's drumming, a gospellike background choir, psychedelic instrumentation and outrageous guitar-soloing (He is really doing a great job with his guitar in the background....you should check it again). It is totally overproduced and bombastic, but in a strange way it gives me the chills when listening to that arrangement. Another one of my 'guilty pleasures' is Animal Kingdom. I guess it is sometimes a blessing when English isnt your (first) language. So, that maybe explains why I dont get so annoyed by Animal Kingdom as others here seem to do... lol So, in terms of the music i consider it one of the best 'Beatlesque' songs in his career. Sure... he goes in overdrive with that Lennon 'effect' on his vocals (Swiiinnnnee.....), and since when does one consider blue cheese as 'funky'? but maybe I just love that kind of quirkieness. IMO his use of humor is something that often gets very overlooked in his music. The music itself it is very cleverly composed and produced, and that is what matters to me in the first place. I'm with you here, Riverpoet31. You even mention the same things that strike me about the tunes. I'll add that the Graffiti Bridge guitar tone where Prince captured in the studio the stone I love the best from him. It's like molten glass. As for Animal Kingdom, I dig it all... especially Rhonda's bass playing. It's a Hendrix song in disguise, as far as I'm concerned. I believe the vocal treatment you're talking about is a result of the effect known as ring modulation. I also like Walk, Don't Walk. I find it funky.

Considering when it was released, I would say Oasis were probably the main influence on this track (they themselves being Beatle-influenced, of course). Around '95 they were probably the hottest band on the planet

Wow,so many diverse answers.
But the thread is turning into, and I thought this might happen, basically any song that wasn't a charting single. I was wondering about "unpopular" in a larger sense, beyond commercial success, i.e., unpopular (or ignored or criticized) even among hardcore fans. Songs such as "She's Always in My Hair," "Joy in Repetition," "17 Days," "Somebody's Somebody" are pretty popular among fans even if they were never appreciated by casual fans. Great discussion nonetheless. Given Prince's enormous catalog, I guess it's inevitable that even if songs aren't affirmatively disliked, a lot of album tracks are "ignored" in a larger context. It's a lot of material to sift through. But, we all love doing it.

Beyond not being commercially popular, these songs probably haven't garnered an appreciation thread or any sort of widespread praise on sites such as this. For me: The Sun, the Moon and Stars -- from Rave. (Not discussed much at all; from an album that gets plenty of bashing) Take Me With You - from Purple Rain, Apollonia's strained vocal track notwithstanding. (Often harshly criticized). [Edited 5/6/09 22:54pm] [Edited 5/7/09 0:20am] Wasted Kissess & Like it there. We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.
