"Temptation" is so much better without the tag ending that he added after the initial song was recorded.

"Joy In Repetition", "Electric Intercourse", "Old Friends 4 Sale" (well at least the original version) are some of the most revered songs on this site, though. They've all had plenty of appreciation threads over the years. On the very first "vote for the best Prince song ever" -threads on the .org and similar sites from the past, "Joy in Repetition" quite often used to top the lists.
Yeah, I personally forgot "Acknowledge Me" from my own list too.

I think it might have to be one song I need to edit in lieu of a better song (same way I edited both "New Power Generations" together, as well as cutting Larry's chant out of "Everyday Is A Winding Road").

Yeah, I personally forgot "Acknowledge Me" from my own list too. Well, I put Joy in Repetition on my list because it may be popular among us fams but if you ask the average person, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would know about it. That's what I had in mind. If you ask people about 1999 or Kiss, that's another story... Check out my tribute to Prince

Gohi said: Digital Garden. To me it's as brilliant as When Doves Cry.
Just. Wow. IMO, WDC is Prince's best song EVER, and Digital Garden is his absolute worst. Saying they are equal is just . But, to each their own... There are MANY "unpopular" tracks I could list, but I'm going to go with one of my faves which NEVER gets mentioned: Walk, Don't Walk I this song...so poppy and upbeat! Lyrically, it has clear, simple message about being true to yourself; a pep-talk, Prince style. Musically, the car horns make it fun and quirky. What really sends me over the top with it is the rubbery, Bobby McFarin-style bass vocalizations that Prince does...so ! My favorite part is the spoken line near the beginning: "Yeah--that's what they want U 2 do." Prince says it the way a would. Good thread.
I am somewhat of a sucker for Graffiti Bridge, the song that is. Allright its corny, cheesy, over the top stuff. The final song of a musical, with utterly simplistic and naive lyrics... But.. I just love how he 'handles' it. The arrangement being a total wall of sound: he throws everything into the mix....Clare fishers orchestrations, Sheila E's drumming, a gospellike background choir, psychedelic instrumentation and outrageous guitar-soloing (He is really doing a great job with his guitar in the background....you should check it again). It is totally overproduced and bombastic, but in a strange way it gives me the chills when listening to that arrangement. Another one of my 'guilty pleasures' is Animal Kingdom. I guess it is sometimes a blessing when English isnt your (first) language. So, that maybe explains why I dont get so annoyed by Animal Kingdom as others here seem to do... lol So, in terms of the music i consider it one of the best 'Beatlesque' songs in his career. Sure... he goes in overdrive with that Lennon 'effect' on his vocals (Swiiinnnnee.....), and since when does one consider blue cheese as 'funky'? but maybe I just love that kind of quirkieness. IMO his use of humor is something that often gets very overlooked in his music. The music itself it is very cleverly composed and produced, and that is what matters to me in the first place.

Okay, a last one, to fullfill a 'top 3':
All the midnights in the world. Probably my favourite Prince-song of the 00's. This song gets often labelled as whimsical, throwaway, cheesy. I can imagine people calling it that when they are judging it on face value, AND, when they aren't very familiar with the term 'perfect popsong'. The charm and strength of this song is that it sounds very nonchalant on face value, the music sounds too 'light' and even the vocals sound like 'he is not really trying'. But underneath that seemingly nonchalance lies a very well-composed popsong. It really is a 'skill' to write and compose such a song, I mean... ask Paul McCartney or Neil Finn (Crowded House) about their numerous attempts. You might not like the execution, but compositionwise its powerfull. All the midnights could be covered by another band, and they could score a classic hit with it. Just as happened with The Bangles covering Manic Monday. [Edited 5/7/09 14:06pm]
