-Trent Reznor is talented, but is very much a cult artist with limited appeal. At one time, NIN was the cutting edge of synth sounds in music, but the same could be said about Prince. How utterly 90's does NIN still sound today?
-Reznor has not the cultural impact, longevity, range, nor commercial & critical success that Prince has. -Nor has Trent got the onstage chops/abilities to match Prince. --We can argue all day and night about "quality" of his music, vs Prince, but it's subjective. Apples and Oranges indeed. Instead, compare career success/impact. -How can the same people at the org who scream for Prince to be "relevant" and "cutting edge" embrace Trent Reznor aka a guy who hasn't made an album that has been "relevant" since 1994? -If Prince had the same career trajectory as Trent Reznor he'd have peaked at Controversy or Dirty Mind. Bottom line: Trent Reznor is cool and I like me some NIN. However, Mr. NIN calling out Prince is a bit is like Dennis Rodman or Latrell Spreewell speaking ill of Michael Jordan. What's the point? "New Power slide...."

It was brave because I'm pretty sure the Leave Prince Alone Brigade is planning massive NIN protests including but not limited to cd burnings as I type! Brave is running into a burning building to save a person. This might be bad business, but Trent will be just fine without the "Leave Prince Alone Brigade" 's business. stanleylieber said: Accujack said: Reznor has every right to call out and criticize anyone he so chooses. As we all do. But why? And why are you so compelled to champion his right to do so? There is nothing constructive about one artist saying that another's art "sucks". Sure, Prince has made derogatory remarks about current pop music, but has he ever said "insert artist here"'s music sucks? It's tacky and childish. I find it hard to believe that had Prince said this on Tavis' show about Reznor's music, you would not have been as eager to stand up for P's right to do so. Am I upset or hurt about Reznor's comment? Absolutely not. I do think less of him though for saying another artist's work sucks. And that goes for his comment about Cuomo as well. At the risk of repeating myself, I have never understood the expectation of formal decorum from pop culture celebrities. That goes for people's expectations of Prince as well (and as fans we know he has his quirks). I agree Reznor could have expressed his view with more grace, and I don't think I would have said it that way myself, but his comments were relevant to the discussion he was having and I find it difficult to argue with his sentiment. As a Prince fan, Reznor wants to be blown away by a new Prince record. He's observing that once Prince got freedom he seemed to slack off in the quality department. Agree or disagree, I'm not disappointed in him for saying so. There is a slight double standard when it comes to Prince because he frequently portrays himself as being a teacher, relating "the truth" to us down here on our level. There is a natural backlash to that kind of attitude that comes out when fans observe Prince's moments of hypocrisy. Reznor is (relatively speaking) immune to that because he doesn't come at you like he's better than you simply because he can play guitar (or whatever instrument). I would agree that people hold Prince to a higher standard in terms of his personal behavior and his public remarks. But consider that Prince put himself in that position by portraying himself as keeper of the truth. You know, I can't remember the last time Reznor spoke in riddles or demanded that fans only comment positively on his work unless they were Miles Davis or his father. There's probably something to that. I'm firmly planted in denial

has this thread really devolved into a "whose weenie is the biggest" throwdown?
i think both are iconic and brilliant in ways that are different but which also overlap somewhat. there are plusses and minuses and greater-thans and less-thans to be argued in both directions. trent is doing with music and the internet today what prince was doing with music and the internet ten years ago. without prince, what NIN is doing these days might not be happening. on the other hand, it would be nice if what prince were doing with the internet these days was as impressive as what NIN has been doing the past couple of years. so see, it can go both ways...

Who will be remembered and revered the most Prince or Razor? Who has been referred to as a Genius countless times by his fellow musicians, peers etc...Prince or Twent? Do Razor blades views actually matter, I mean come on...who the fuck is he, is he known outside the US of A? Its not as if a 'musical great' had passed these remarks, he is obviously very jealous and seeking attention and devoid of any class what so ever to make petty comments about a fellow 'artist'. Lotusflow3r and MPLS are fantastic albums and from what I can gather I am not the only one who thinks so. I have been a listener of the mans music for 26 years now and to me there as good as any he has put out so go fuck an orange. Your questions are pointless because Prince is remembered, revered and called a genius based on his past work, not his current work! When it comes to his current work, the most revering comments are about how he stuck it to the music industry as far as distribution goes, not about the quality of the material! In 10 years, no one other than the hardcorest of Prince fans will even remember Lotusflow3r or MPLS. If he continues at that rate, eventually he's going be remembered purely for his ability to stick it to the music industry, not his greatness as an artist and I think that'll be a damn shame! All I know is that regardless of the mixed opinions of people concerning the quality or lack of regarding Prince's recent out put... all that matters in this situation is...
Who the fuck is Trent Reznor? If not for a couple people here holding his sack all the time... I wouldn't know who the hell he was. Nor would I care. And I still don't. I could ask the same question to every one I know... and they would give the same reply, " Trent who...???" According to 'you guys'... he's done some very fan friendly things with marketing himself to his fans. But what does that really have to do about his music? The only people who will utter his name in the same sentence with Prince are his own fans.. while everyone else is still asking "who?".

I guess Trent loved all the other Prince CDs..lololol He really liked: TRC, 1999, Lovesexy, Batman, Sign O' The Times.. Yeah... They were real "Techno Metal" CDs like Reznor produces... Clearly, he's "slamming" and "name-dropping" for attention.
