I'm not even trying to put him down, he's a very good musician (better than me to confirm your point). But my point is that the wrong things that Prince does contribute to the right things. NIN is more middle ground, and I prefer the extremes of Prince, even the lame ones. As musician I try not to knock other musicians so much because I know how hard it is. I would expect Trent to be the same. If he listened to MPLSound closely, he'd hear the quality of the musicianship. There's no need for him to knock a talented musician (maybe to raise himself up?) for the benefit of his non-musician fans. Weezer continues to have hits. They're doing fine. Why bash them? 'Cause he wants to? I don't know, I guess I just don't understand the extreme distaste for negative criticism amongst Prince fans. (Unless they're talking about someone other than Prince, that is.) Reznor voiced an opinion. It's no more important than that. You may not be aware, but he's somewhat famous for letting his feelings rip. Just as Prince is somewhat famous for not acknowledging the presence of other human beings when he deigns them beneath his notice. I don't actually buy into the notion that one has to be a musician (talented or not) in order to criticize someone else's music. I brought up the stunning hypocrisy of dismissing Reznor's opinion by saying his music sucks simiply in order to point out the stunning hypocrisy of dismissing Reznor's opinion by saying his music sucks. If you think for a second, "Prince is more talented than Reznor so Reznor should shut up" is not really a coherent position. It invalidates all positive opinions we might hold as well, rendering all of our presence on this site invalid. End thread. End site. FAIL. I realize I'm yelling at a wall here. Reznor has every right to call out and criticize anyone he so chooses. As we all do. But why? And why are you so compelled to champion his right to do so? There is nothing constructive about one artist saying that another's art "sucks". Sure, Prince has made derogatory remarks about current pop music, but has he ever said "insert artist here"'s music sucks? It's tacky and childish. I find it hard to believe that had Prince said this on Tavis' show about Reznor's music, you would not have been as eager to stand up for P's right to do so. Am I upset or hurt about Reznor's comment? Absolutely not. I do think less of him though for saying another artist's work sucks. And that goes for his comment about Cuomo as well. He is exactly who we thought he was

But, again, my point is simply that if Trent wants to criticize Prince that's fine, but I (along with many others) actually prefer Prince, even now. So maybe Trent should shut up & take some notes from Prince--not because he has no right to criticize or because he has no valid points, but because his own music is not above criticism. But... By your own logic, this very post I'm replying to is only valid if your own music is superior to Reznor's. I give up. Not really, because I'd never say Trent wasn't a great musician. I'm only comparing him to Prince--and he set himself up for that comparison by making the comments. I don't actually think we are really disagreeing that much, here. I see your point. And I see Trent's for that matter. My Legacy

Am I upset or hurt about Reznor's comment? Absolutely not. I do think less of him though for saying another artist's work sucks. And that goes for his comment about Cuomo as well. At the risk of repeating myself, I have never understood the expectation of formal decorum from pop culture celebrities. That goes for people's expectations of Prince as well (and as fans we know he has his quirks). I agree Reznor could have expressed his view with more grace, and I don't think I would have said it that way myself, but his comments were relevant to the discussion he was having and I find it difficult to argue with his sentiment. As a Prince fan, Reznor wants to be blown away by a new Prince record. He's observing that once Prince got freedom he seemed to slack off in the quality department. Agree or disagree, I'm not disappointed in him for saying so. There is a slight double standard when it comes to Prince because he frequently portrays himself as being a teacher, relating "the truth" to us down here on our level. There is a natural backlash to that kind of attitude that comes out when fans observe Prince's moments of hypocrisy. Reznor is (relatively speaking) immune to that because he doesn't come at you like he's better than you simply because he can play guitar (or whatever instrument). I would agree that people hold Prince to a higher standard in terms of his personal behavior and his public remarks. But consider that Prince put himself in that position by portraying himself as keeper of the truth. You know, I can't remember the last time Reznor spoke in riddles or demanded that fans only comment positively on his work unless they were Miles Davis or his father. There's probably something to that. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

I think this has more to do with last year's PFU debacle than with Prince's music.
Trent is a self-confessed Prince fan (circa 80s/early 90s anyway) and I think he really disagreed with Prince's recent online tactics . . . suing YouTube, Pirate Bay, closing down fansites, etc. Trent Reznor is the exact opposite. He embraces YouTube, BitTorrent, and even his own fansites, and is revolutionizing online music sales and distribution. Musically, they could not be further apart.

"I’m not Prince or Rivers Cuomo who brags about having hundreds of great songs,” Reznor said. “And to that I would say, Prince, if you have a hundred great songs or a thousand, how about picking a few and putting them on your record that you’ve put out because your last several have sucked. Same for you, Rivers. I say that constructively, you know.” awww Trent is envious because Prince doesnt have to consistently giveaway free music , be active on Twitter or conduct corny April fools joke for his fans to like him. The last albums havent sucked, no matter what quality of music is in anyones opinion, it will always sell point blank. let the games begin Holy shit!
