I have never cared to listen to NIN. I'm sorry... his/thier music doesn't appeal to me nor most people from my culture. Its just a fact. Where I came from... R&B, soul, jazz, funk, gospel, house and hip hop dominated our radio... our clubs.,..everything. My community was more into R Kelly and Public Announcement, Mary J Blidge, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, Yolanda Adams, Be Be and CeCe Winans, Johnny Gill, NWA, AMG, Too Short, Fast Eddie, Farley Jackmaster Funk, etc etc .. and could not care less about 'rock' music.

FYI: I know about all that kind of music too. PLUS a gazillion of other bands and records. So maybe I know a little bit more about music than you do.

First learn to read. I said the 'white boy music' thing is a stereotype in my community... that is just fact and has nothing to do with my views. If you are white... I guarantee you did not grow up in my 99% black community and maybe you just don't realize how rock music is generalized.

Two words: Jimi Hendrix.

But I guess some people are too busy looking at skin color when they categorize music.

Then you see all those R&B and Jazz and Funk and Gospel greats drawing huge crowds at festivals in Europe, and you notice how astonished they are at the size of the crowds.

I guess some people are too busy asking "what's yo latest hit brother?" to understand the history of music.

The fact is, Trent Reznor isn't very wide ranging in his musical style. His tunes never stray far from angst and machinery.

It has nothing to do with skin color...look at David Bowie. He can be as soulful as almost anyone. When Bowie says, "Let's Dance" you want to dance. Reznor hasn't displayed that groove in his arsenal yet.

1. Trent and Bowie collaborated and toured together.

2. "Let's Dance" = Nile Rodgers. A LOT of Nile Rodgers and a little of Bowie. How do I know? Listen to Duran Duran's Notorious, or Grace Jones' "I'm Not Perfect",...

So based on these two things, I dare say that people shouldn't look at your opinion of Reznor and his music as informed or relevant.

Oh, BTW: plenty of women at NIN gigs.

And please remind me: which Prince tunes did Johnny Cash cover?

And rap never used rock? Please... Kerry King from frikking Slayer played on the Beastie Boys' first album. Aerosmith played with Run-DMC (and there was rock on their earlier albums).

1. I don't think that working & touring with Bowie means your music is automatically as diverse as Bowie's. On the contrary, I'm Afraid of Americans just sounds like NIN as sung by Bowie.

I will say that Bowie's decision to work with him is a huge compliment to his talent, however.

2. I think "let's dance" was more wordplay than a reference to the album. Bowie was doing funky music years before that.

Right but he said he didn't know who NIN was because they were just white boys making noise. I don't like that kind of talk. He was saying that he wouldn't know about the white music because he grew up with "his" kind of music. Well, I know and am very familiar with "his" kind of music even though I'm white. So that sounds racist to me.

Well a lot of the criticism for Prince always stikes me as some sort of underlying racism to it as well and "I dont like that kind of talk" either. You aint slick either getawayfromme.

Oh but it does matter, it matters to me. But thanks anyway for trying to tell how I'm supposed to fucking think. How bout ignorant? Is that a term that you would find acceptable in this circumstance? Perhaps I'm just a tad bit more sophisticated, seeing that I did not limit myself as a child or teenager by skin color to determine what type of music I listened to.

Thank you to those who actually read what I said and tried to explain it so that even a child could understand.

I never said I limited myself... I said I DID NOT follow the general perception of music which was around me. But in case you didn't get what I was saying..which obviously you didn't... I had to seek out other ways of listening to music I liked because all that was offered in my community was R&B, Gospel, Rap and the like which in the 80's and 90's were genres dominated by black musicians. By the time NIN came out... I had no real knowledge of them because it wasn't the music played in my house or in any ones house I knew. And what I did hear.. I just didn't like. So why in the hell would I try to find out more information like who the lead singer was... of a group I did not like...?

The point is that I did not have to like a group like Jodeci, for instance... but by virtue of living in my environment.. I couldn't help but to know the names of every member of that group. If I had lived in an environment which favored NIN, even though I did not like them... I may have still knew who Trent Reznor was because NIN was representative of the type of music played. But I didn't. You may not like the term 'white boy' music... but every black person (and a few Hispanic too) will tell you that is what people in their community refereed to rock music as...whether they themselves did or not. I NEVER did because it would have been insulting to the music I listened to.

For the most part I was the 'wanna be'. Have you ever been called that...? A 'wanna be' is an insult from one black person to another because they are trying to imply that you want to be 'white'. I was called that because I did not like listening to R&B 24/7 and thought that David Bowie, Queen, the Doors, Duran Duran, Frankie goes To Hollywood, Faith no More and other like groups were cool. My exposure to the 70's groups came from my own father... he picked up on groups like the Doors while serving in Vietnam.

The others I got into while I was in college... my FIRST experience going to a school which was not 100% black. And yes.. it was my 'white' friends who listened to hard rock and metal which got me into much of it. And the 'wanna be' label followed me. It was in fact, through them that I first heard NIN (we all gotta hear music somewhere first) and it was then..as I already mentioned.. that I went..,'meh'... don't like em..and never cared to know more about them. And adding to that, because NIN, as I have mentioned repeatedly, was not representative of the type of music which would get played in my environment...period... I never heard the name Trent Reznor even by chance until the internet..and Bart!

Some of you simply need to brush up on your reading comprehension before you go throwing the 'racist' label around.

And if anyone says that the internet didn't broaden thier musical base... they are a lie. Via the net... we all have heard music from musicians and/or have learned things we never would have known other wise.

FYI: I couldn't give a rats ass about what you know. And please... don't make uneducated assumptions. You don't know me. You haven't a clue what I listen too... nor the extent of my musical knowledge. There is a hell of a lot of music outside of rock. All you can be sure of is that I don't listen to, don't like and never cared to know anything about your boy friend... Trent Reznor.

I read your other post responding to something I said as well. I'm not about to go on and on repeating myself, which I've already done plenty, because some stupid asses can't read and wish to create controversy where there was none. Like talking about the crowds acts draw in Europe...? What in the fuck does that have to do with anything I said...? Europeans have always been fascinated with ALL forms of American music. And just because 'some' rap groups incorporated rock into thier music does not mean by default you have to like rock... or NIN.

I like some rock as well as many other genre's of music...I just wasn't exposed to much of it at an early age. The only time MTV came on in my house was to watch 'Yo MTV Raps' and the only radio in Chicago was R&B, Top 40 and Classic Rock. I apologize for growing up in one of the most racially segregated cities in the US which had strong opinions about music and racial divides..... but it was what it was. Mis-stating the same shit I repeatedly have said was NOT MY THINKING, BUT RATHER THE THINKING OF THE COMMUNITY AROUND ME is more telling of your own ignorance and lack of reading comprehension. Its not my fault some of you can't imagine living in a world where Trent Reznor is less relevant that Vanilla Ice.
