Prince is significant as an important historical figure in '80s pop and Reznor is significant as a prototype of what's to come as more and more successful artists defect from their record labels and setup shop on the Internet.

It's ludicrous to compare Prince's best work with other pop musicians of the modern era just as it's ludicrous to pretend other artists aren't SPANKING him when it comes to developing meaningful new ways to build connections between their work and their fans.

Prince's celebrity is strictly 20th century in character. He's taken great strides in putting himself out there on the Internet, but he also seems to think that turning up his nose at baseline acceptable business practices is a good way to conduct his affairs in the age of instant communications.

Prince knows he's a pimp. He is making his money. But Prince's pimp style will need to adjust itself to the changing times in this age of legalized, non-stigmatized prostitution.
