If you are referring to his business model, then yes.. and i don't think any fan would mind that.

The Slip, which debuted for free download in May 2008 on his website. By making his music available to fans for free, Trent Reznor embraced the true openness of the Internet, similar to the release of the album Year Zero, which launched with an award-winning alternate reality game. Trent Reznor's ability to connect with fans far and wide through the Web makes him a qualified ambassador of online culture, and arguably one of the most-recognized artists harnessing the power of the Internet to spread music.

Trents is a millionaire? What does he do? Never heard of him.

Look, let Prince do his thing, and let Trent do his.

That's the worst part about this thread that it brings about this lame ass psuedo competiton between the fans of these 2 over who's more "relevant", or who's the bigger genius, or who has the bigger and better internet presence!!!

This shit is lame!!!

That's my main problem with this stupid ass thread!!!

Prince couldn't give less than a fuck about what Trent thinks about his recent output. Just like Trent wouldn't give a fuck if somebody else said that same thing about him. And trust me, I've heard those same things being said.

So, why does this stupid fucking argument always pop up???

This is just a weak ass fight between fans of 2 multimillionaires who couldn't give less than a God Damn about them fighting over which one of the 2 multimillionaires' dick is the biggest!!!

Reznor is a niche musician who straddles the line between underground and mainstream. Back in 1989 when he was first breaking, SPIN magazine quoted Bill Leeb (of Front Line Assembly fame) as saying, "Trent Reznor is to Industrial music what New Kids On The Block are to hip-hop."

In relation to Prince, Reznor has achieved a comparatively progression vision of how to interface with his fans. I don't like Reznor's music as much as I like Prince's music, but that's not really saying very much when it comes to modern pop artists. Prince is probably the greatest, most significant (in terms of the art form) mainstream pop artist since Bowie's '70s heyday.

To answer your question in this specific frame of reference: In relation to Prince, Reznor has drawn a metric fuckload of overly defensive reactions from Prince fans who don't seem to realize just how marginal both Prince and Reznor are in the consciousness of the modern day mainstream consumer. Prince is significant as an important historical figure in '80s pop and Reznor is significant as a prototype of what's to come as more and more successful artists defect from their record labels and setup shop on the Internet.

It's ludicrous to compare Prince's best work with other pop musicians of the modern era just as it's ludicrous to pretend other artists aren't SPANKING him when it comes to developing meaningful new ways to build connections between their work and their fans.

Prince's celebrity is strictly 20th century in character. He's taken great strides in putting himself out there on the Internet, but he also seems to think that turning up his nose at baseline acceptable business practices is a good way to conduct his affairs in the age of instant communications.

Prince knows he's a pimp. He is making his money. But Prince's pimp style will need to adjust itself to the changing times in this age of legalized, non-stigmatized prostitution.

Chart information:

NIN doesn't sell as many records as Prince. Especially not if you compare both of their entire careers. But he does okay.

falloff This discussion started with one artist bluntly commenting on another. It became a "lame ass pseudo-competition" when the Leave Prince Alone Brigade reduced it to such because they can't handle anyone and I do mean ANYONE...on this board or elsewhere criticizing Prince...whether it's true and for his own good or not!

On that note...I'm going to watch the final live Broadway performance of RENT that I just bought on dvd...until I fall to sleep. If this thread manages to stay open...I'll get back to y'all tomorrow! peace
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.
