My comment will sound real naive or juvenile, but is there a way for all of us to stop keeping score about who flamed who? No one should hi-jack threads or flame anyone. I'm not against disagreements or discourse, but why does it have to be so spiteful and mean spirited? And I am not asking you to explain or justify anyone's actions. An open forum is just that, an open forum, but I always thought that leisure activities were supposed to create joy/happiness and not anger and spite. I think that I will return to coming here just to check the news of when Prince will be on television and stuff like that. There is so much stress and anger in the real world; why would we want to create it here in a space where we should be enjoying ourselves? I don't mind being corrected or enlightened, but calling people names and speaking in angry generalities does nothing but create negativity. I don't want to spend my leisure time that way.

I think the problem here is that you have come at this site with honesty and intelligence. I trust you've seen the error of your ways. This is humanity we're talking about.

I appreciate the comments you've made in this thread. You caught me being flippant and I hope I haven't contributed to your (renewed?) disillusionment with the Org. I was in the same boat as you ten years ago. However, I don't think most of the people who camp here all day really take this stuff that seriously. We argue, sure; but we're all Prince fans and I hope we all realize that.

"Go get laid???" Really??? That's real...mature??? I have had disagreements with others on this site and Housequake that did not devolve into crap talk. My bad for thinking that you wanted to do something other than rant and insult people.

I'll tell ya what's mature; putting words in other peoples mouths to prove a point on a non-issue. More than once.

Crap talk? Nah. I just think yer wound a lil' too tight, and might need to relax. I for one am a firm believer in the relaxing qualities of a good gut beating session.

This Jam grew on me just like a lot of his music does. I like it that way though because that just means it will last longer. It is funny to hear all the haters on this site spewing forth the hate on Prince about how he's not funky enough or he doesn't sound like he did 25 years ago or that he is not rock enough or he's not this or that and that his mamma's not black and that his wig is wack.

You would think these people lived at the Hatery making thier hater cakes and pies, wearing thier hater suits and ties. Knowing that if they met Prince they would be so quiet you could hear a rat peeing on cotten. Almost as if they were eating glue sandwiches. Or maybe they would give him a Judas smile and try to give him a jaded greeting. Prince has never been purely one style of music and that is why he has made P-Funk proud, rockers admire his guitar and pop stars love his music. That is why I love his music! He is the artist of artist.

The man is 50 and still putting out shit like this! Most 50 year olds are grandpas and don't do nearly as much. Most 50 year olds are waiting to hit that magic number so they can retire. We still get an album a year and sometimes more. They once said Van Gogh was crazy and that his work was worthless and that his style would never amount to anything. He might of been a little crazy but a couple of centuries later his shit is worth millions and no one remembers the all those people working at the Hatery.

One of the worst songs on the 3-CD set imo. Boring, plodding, pointless.

Indeed.

Also some of Prince's worst lyrics evar.

And considering TGRES in '99, and OSC this year, I'd expect another "Flava In Ya Ear" retread in 2019.

And don't forget him using it in '02 as well at the end of Anna Stesia on the ONA tour.

Hey dude, "love is free from all this."

I bought my son some shoes that he really liked the other day. I didn't buy my daughter any because she has tons of shoes that she hardly wears. As soon as my son gets home he asks his sister if she likes his shoes. With a shot of venom she replies "those are the ugliest shoes I ever saw". I had to explain to her that there is a nicer way she could have said it like "those shoes are not the type I like but I'm happy for you". I had to explain to her that jelousy and spite aren't good for the body. But maybe that is a bit much to expect from a 7 yr old.

My comment wasn't directed at you but if you feel that it was then at least straiten up your tie when you speak. And yes "love is free from all this".

Funk is James Brown, P-Funk, Bootsy Collins. These are some of the original Funkateers there are more. Prince still has these qualities and influences in his music just not as extreme. He's still funky, he's just not concentrating on that in this album. I don't know about ya'll but but I think 3121 was a pretty funky song.

...happen to be listening to OSC at this moment, and I'm trippin' on how even EVERY syllable of lyric is tightly syncopated (quantized), woven within the rhythm, with that deep, and very funky, groove rolling on through. Yeah, I'm definitely excited about this song. nod

And yeah, it's purty much the antithesis of funk.

Could you define Funk for me? Now, I know that at first take, your instinct will be merely to list some songs. But since you have used the phrase, "antithesis of funk," could you provide an actual definition of "funk" 'cause based on my pretty extensive listening of music, "OSC" is funky as hell. So, please, educate me, enlighten me. What constitutes a funk chord or a funk progression or a funk groove? Again, I'm not saying that you don't have a right to your opinion. If you think that the song sucks, then that's cool, but you are making the point as others on this site that Prince ain't funky no more, and I'd like to know what constitutes funk, by empirical definition. Then once you provide the definition, explain how the song, note for note and chord for chord, is the "antithesis of funk" Because if you can't do that, then that makes your statement the "antithesis of objective discourse."
