Prince's 1999 album Appreciation Thread!

I used to think Sign 'O' The Times was his best album, but now I honestly think 1999 is his best!
Its amazing! The album is really diverse, but also all strung together by one sound!
Whats your guys thoughts on 1999??

Yes, very underrated album, think I prefer this to PR. I'm surprised this album isnt' more revered by fans.
You see more of the raw Prince (listen to some of the lyrics) and its VERY funky.

1999 is one of his best albums and it has a really sexy sound!

In terms of musical evolution it seems like a natural stepping stone between Controversy and Purple Rain. 1999, Little Red Corvette and Lady Cab Driver are great songs and Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married, D.M.S.R., Free and International Lover are really good. The first time I heard D.M.S.R. was on the 1983 Tom Cruise-movie Risky Business (great movie). I had other Prince-albums at the time (this was the late 90s) but not 1999, but when I heard that song, I immediately thought it was really funky and went out and got the album.

This is what I was expecting MPLSound to sound like. Amazing from beginning to end. The synths are so powerful on this record.

Totally from another planet than the more "live" sound of Purple Rain. He's never been able (or has really wanted to) to reproduce this (or PR for that matter) sound again.

It was the heart and soul of prince's mInneapolis sound. Many artists have been influenced by that sroke of genious. The "1999" album kicks royal ass and it was very muti-layered with its complex arrangements. i miss those days when you could feel his music pulsating out of his veins. The way he wrote and sang came more down from deep inside, during that entire era, IPrince took his time with perfecting those syth beats and arrangements. the sample loops were fascinating as well.

really?? i've never seen risky business (not a tom cruise fan and back then i would've had NO REASON to see this movie), but i'm curious about the scene where DMSR is played. BTW 1999 i a bonafied masterpiece
