You people do understand that producing digipaks is a lot more expensive than jewel cases, right? They can cost usually about 30%-50% more to manufacture. I doubt this applies to the Lotusflow3r "digisleeve", but it's not really a digipak per se.

Jewel cases are basic consumer trash, nothing more. The entire design is just totally inexcusable by this point, especially after they started making the tray transparent by standard in the mid-90d (Prince's first was TGE, I think) - making the entire thing look really oddly shaped. I remember when I was a teenager I wouldn't buy digipak releases for some reason either, I guess I didn't like them at one point. Oh yeah, now I remember what the reason was exactly: I used to think they would "stick out too much from my record shelf". Go figure.

These days most artists I know personally demand from the labels on getting their stuff out on digipaks. But that's just what it's like at the marginal music end of things.

lol Not necessarily true. I'm far from a kid, but I prefer the jewel cases any day over the digipaks. It's not so much about a person's age as to what they prefer, it's more of a matter of personal taste.

But... kids usually like plastic. sad

BRING BACK THE JEWEL CASE CD RELEASES PRINCE!!!!
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT.....IT ACTUALLY PRESERVES THE CD AND BOOKLET WHEN THERE IS ONE INCLUDED IN A JEWEL CASE PRODUCT. WHEN THE FANS GO OUT AND BUY A COPY OF A NEW PRINCE CD REMEMBER THAT THEY ARE BUYING IT TO HAVE AND CHERISH FOR THEIR COLLECTIONS FOREVER.....NOT A LIMITED TYPE OF RUN. IT HAS VALUE.
IT BECOMES A BOLD PROUD STATEMENT TO SHOW OTHERS. THANK YOU.

People will back anything someone says on here when there is more than 3 favoring in an opinion...because we have the same thread on non-prince forum where we are agreeing that digipacks are better than jewel cases.
Go figure

the way I read this, the majority here likes digipacks as well...

Totally agree with saving the planet and all and if ALL bands or distrubution companies would lower the price of a cd than maybe it wouldnt be so bad. But I too prefer the plastic cases. They look nicer, present well, and they could offer a bit more if they wanted to such as lyrics and photos. Just a bit more bang for the buck.

Well, I'm 38, and have been buying CDs for over 20 years, and have never liked digipacks for the same reason mentioned repeatedly above, they don't protect the CDs as well as jewel cases and they wear out, since the artwork is on the digipack jewel cases are also better at protecting the artwork. It's simple, those that prefer jewel cases are mostly concerned with protecting the cd and the artwork while those that prefer digipacks are more concerned with keeping the plastic jewel cases out of landfills.
By the way, very few of my jewel cases have ended up in landfills, most are still on my shelf, hmm...

PRINCE.....WE ALL SAY THIS WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT TO YOU. ALBUMS LIKE," THE GOLD EXPERIENCE," ARE NOW OUT OF PRINT AND TO ANYONE WHO HAS A COPY IT....WE'LL IT WAS RELEASED IN A JEWEL CASE WITH A FULL COLOR BOOKLET AND THE PRODUCT IS WELL PRESERVED RATHER THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IF IT WAS DISTRIBUTED AS A DIGIPACK. THANKFULLY IT WAS NOT RELEASED THAT WAY AS THE CARDBOARD COVER BY NOW WOULD HAVE BEEN TRULY FADED AND THE EDGES OF THE CASE WOULD HAVE BEEN FADED DUE TO THE AIR.
TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH.....NO MATER HOW PRINCE RELEASES HIS ALBUMS I WILL ALWAYS RUN THE DAY THEY ARE DISTRIBUTED AND PURCHASE IT.....BUT I DO PREFER THE JEWEL CASE FORMAT. THANK YOU FOR READING.

I'm always moaning about non-existent digital media. I want something I can hold in my hands (eh?). I want decent artwork, lyrics, the lot. I actually don't mind the cardboard cases despite the fact that they look really old after only a year or so. It's nice to be given the choice of format. Obviously vinyl is the way to go and anyone with any interest in what's happening will see that many artists are putting out vinyl as well as digital and cd versions.

As I keep saying, how will people trade mp3s at record fares or look back over their collection with pride and nostalgia in years to come?

i used to, but they are hard on discs. i just use this now, honestly:

Incredible I have both of those items. I can understand some fans want jewel cases and others don't mind digipaks, especially if you are just going to burn the discs on to your PC/IPOD/MP3 Player anyway. Maybe he should offer good numbers of each in both formats, keep everyone happy. And for those who are worried about the environment, charge $1 more for a copy of a disc with a jewel case.
As I understand the first album to come out on Digipack by Prince was the Rainbow children right, but I have a copy of the Betcha by golly wow/ Right back here in my arms CD single from 1996 (With poster of Prince holding symbol guitar by the globe) which was a Digipack. Does anyone have anything older?

the first one I bought by Prince was New Power Generation (Maxi-Single), followed by Gett Off, Cream, My Name Is Prince, 7, Letitgo, Space, Purple Medley, Eye Hate U... at least then it was just the singles.

The Batman singles (3" CDs) came in shaped cardboard packaging.

I, like most of you I'm sure, have too much music to carry around all the cases. I do prefer the jewel cases just because they are more likely to come with lyrics/other media. I store my cases in a CD rack but have the discs in a book. A cheap one, I must admit. Recently, I ran out of space so purchased a smaller (100, I think) book to hold just my Prince items. I searched high and low for a book that would hold not only the disc but the "books" or "covers" that come in the jewel cases. I was unable to find such a thing. This photo appears to be just what I'm looking to get. Can you tell me the manufacturer? Does anyone else know of another CD book that holds discs and "books" like this?
