Pleastic is recyclable to some degree and will last a tad longer. Also it is easier to replace. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I prefer digipacks or other alternate mainly card packaging... if it's done well.
My favorite types are the fold out ones with a plastic tray to hold the CD and a clear plastic sleeve to protect the card. Like the last U2 album, or double disc remaster sets like The Cure ones.

I miss the jewel cases. I thought I had more to say but I don't. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I prefer jewel cases.
The digpaks don't hold up well. Also the discs seem to easily fall out and that damn Musicology digipak drive me crazy with the booklet always falling out!

I don't like jewel cases. The "hinges" always break & they end up all scratched up. I guess you can always replace them with fresh & new ones, but the cardboard cases remind me of records & I much prefer them.
Of course, I would also prefer some liner notes, but hey, 3 cd's for $12, what do I expect? My Legacy

You know we all have left over jewel cases somewhere. I have a literal suitcase full of them. They should just sell the CD and the artwork, etc, and let the consumer assemble it at home.
It'd help with the whole green thing, and it's save costs too. Digitpaks still use paper, and it's doubtful it's not 100% recycled. We should reuse what we have. Crystal Ball online was a great thing because it came with no great artwork, but you could download it and print it out on photo paper or whatever, and have it all for yourself. Or maybe you chose to save paper, go green, and not print it.

Hello everyone.....
I am a BIG FAN of the JEWEL CASE CD COVERS. I do not like at all these so called,"DIGIPACKS!!" They are made of cheap cardboard and in keeping them in fantastic condition has become a very difficult task. After one year you will see that the edges of the cardboard start to fade a bit. Due to this I end up purchases two copies of PRINCES last grouping of albums, and I keep them sealed so I have those records in perfect condition. With the JEWEL cases in the past, they would feature anywhere between a 16-24 page full color booklet that usually featured the lyrics to each and every song and some great unreleased pictures that made this so valuable. Lots of times you get get some behind the scenes information about the project that you are listening to. I understand about the economy and in saving paper.....but the DIGIPACKS have taken the fun out of cd purchasing. With the LOTUSFLOWER release.....where are the lyrics, or the photo's or the bio's????? I am not feeling it these days. Due to this.....I had actually stopped buying many groups albums and just get my friends to make me copies of some of the new releases that I am interested in. I only buy the DIGIPACKS for PRINCE because it is PRINCE. Nicky Tuzio e-mail: tuztones@optimum.net

Cardboard packaging for retail CDs is really just smoke and mirrors to give the illusion of being environmentally friendly. Albums are theoretically supposed to be something you keep for a lifetime. When's the last time anyone has ever recycled a cardboard CD package? Longboxes went away because that was wasteful packaging (though, I still have all my longboxes). Let's talk about all the plastic-bottled water that was gulped down at the meetings discussing each "eco-pack" CD release. OK, let's not.
These cardboard packages use untold gallons of ink (some biodegradable soy, most toxic), foils, varnishes, glues and ultraviolet resistant coatings. They also use proprietary dies for cutting the unique shapes, dies for embossing/de-bossing and many plates for the 4- to 6-color artwork. All of the plates and dies are metal, not reusable and are usually considered hazardous waste. For an average jewel case booklet and tray card, artwork can be trimmed with a standard press cutter. No dies. If an artist wanted cheap and environmentally friendly, a bi-fold booklet in a jewel case would be fine on our mother earth. It just wouldn't look politically correct. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Planet Earth was released in two versions: digipak (in stores) and eco-wallet (through the Mail on Sunday in UK). Never saw a jewel case edition, not even on ebay.

Not necessarily true. I'm far from a kid, but I prefer the jewel cases any day over the digipaks. It's not so much about a person's age as to what they prefer, it's more of a matter of personal taste. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
