The fact he has to use the same voice effect as today's rappers (the cher effect) says everything.

Bullshit.

If there is one thing I can unequivocally say is the same about Prince is that his voice is just as good now, or is slightly better, than it was in the 80's. Especially live. Go back and watch Prince and the Revolution: LIVE and notice how he strains in many of the songs.

I think it's because back then Prince was all over the place, sliding dipping running twisting splitting, he doesn't do it like that anymore. huff n & puffin

i like valentina and illusion, coma, circumstance however his singing style in these are examples of wat i cringe at. perhaps if he sang them diffently. again, ime down with all his music. but recent changes in singing style iz noticable. thoughts?

Hmmmm Im gonna have 2 disagree Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife (1996) and Call My Name (2004) have 2 of his best vocal performances in my opinion nod there was far 2 much screeching in the 80s...not that i mind him screeching...but there was a bit 2 much of it lol

Prince is not a good singer, he just has a unique voice.
Most of the time he sounds like a chicken that got hit in the nuts

WTF?

His voice is much better now eek

Seeing him live...and hearing those old botts....his voice is MUCH BETTER now.

I think what the orger is saying is that he uses that gospel tone too much now and days..he didnt used to do that with his deep register. I would suggest him to find a better pitch.

Perfect example in "Black Sweat" .. 'you can act hard if you want to..' those vocals kind of sound muddled and broken..even my mom said, "why he always be scowlin' like that, uuuhh...". However he never uses this tone live.

I may not be a good singer or geat vocalist but I have an ear for a right tone, and sometimes I strain when i hear him go "Get freaky, let ya head bob" or "NPG GET ROWDY NAW!" no...no ... not in that tone

I'd have to say that his voice does seem better in the last 10 years live. Maybe not clearly on the studio cuts, but certainly live...

i know it would be impossible for him to do his patented screams now at 51, but i do agree that he has sounded a little nasally for the past 15 years, but that's just age i guess, he has no control over it.

For those of you that think he sounds the same or better, to me the litmus test has always been 1999 the new master, same song redone 18 years later, no hate,....but tell me if he sounds just as good or better.

I have never heard him do the weird enunciation thing at a live show.

AGREED . I grew up in the 80's. I was there. His voice is wayyyyy better now. He can go higher and he never strains. His voice is smoother now too.
