Prince and Tricky

I remmeber reading a Prince interview in the mid to late 90's and the interviewer asked him about the artist Tricky. Prince had never heard of him, but the journalist promised to send him a copy of Premellinium Tensions (not one of his best imo).

I was just wondering if Prince is hip to tricky now and whether he's mentioned his music?

Btw, I've heard that Tricky has covered "When Doves Cry" in concert before. Anybody know what it sounds like?

I think Prince had had heard of Tricky at this point and in fact referred to "Pre-Millennium Tension" as another way to say 1999.
He also noted that he would like a copy but he wouldn't be able to pick one at the mall because it wouldn't be there. the journalist checked and it wasn't and so decided to send Prince a copy.
Tricky is one of the most underappreciated artists around at the mo.
As to Prince referencing Tricky's music in his own hasn't happen as yet because he rarely refers to other artist as influences. Other artist beyond his circle like Sonny T, Maceo,Larry Graham etc

I know the drummer in Tricky's band, and When Doves Cry certainly doesn't feature in the current set.

When not on tour with Tricky, he plays in my funk band. If you're interested, check him out (playing with us):

Prince's voice on Silicon reminds me of Tricky.

Tricky's Christansands is pretty cool.

Tricky is great! His first 4 albums (if you include the Nearly God project) get progressively darker and deeper. Mood music. Not sure where you get that he doesn't like Prince from - did he say that in an interview sometime? Hell, he even name drops Wendy & Lisa in one of his tracks... cool

The journalist was Liz Jones, who wrote about it Chapter 1 of her biography of Prince, 'Slave To The Rhythm' which was also released as 'Purple Reign'. It seems from the way the interview is described that Prince had never heard of Tricky.

I've never come across any reference by Prince to Tricky following this interview either.
