Some people here claim that Madhouse 8 and 16 is Jazz. I guess that can be a matter of interpretation. If it's mean to be Jazz, it isn't a very good shot at it. According to the dictionary, Jazz is this: A. style of music, native to America, characterized by a strong but flexible rhythmic understructure with solo and ensemble improvisations on basic tunes and chord patterns and, more recently, a highly sophisticated harmonic idiom. b. Big band dance music.

Well yeah, but especially in the Jazz genre, it is important to the legacy of an album how other Jazz musicians and critics rate it. In the end it's up to the buyer if he/she likes it or not. But the buyer doesn't define the musical direction of the album.

Like everything else about Prince, I will only believe it when I'm actually listening to it.
I do hope it happens though. It would be brilliant.

Jazz is where Prince should stay from now On... the pop crap/elevator music he's doing needs to go... he should stick to funk/r&b/rock/Jazz Same goes for Mariah, but she's such a stupid air-head she has no clue (thats another subject) Anita Baker is perfect for jazz. But Prince?!? NAY!!! I rather of him to play funk, rock, & electronic only.

And, I'm not sure this would be a good pairing. Anita's productions tend to have a warmth and sophistication to them that I don't see Prince being able to replicate in a way that'd be true to her sound. To that end, I think Prince should stay far away from jazz. He's a great musician but he's a far way from being a jazz master. [Edited 4/29/09 22:39pm] Indeed! I agree 100%. He needs to stick to what he knows-funk, rock and pop. Jazz-not so much.

MrSoulpower said: dilwithers said: maybe. see how easy it is to say "maybe" or "I think"? I think if you can have an extremely stale "jazz" track with a group of musicians you can have a good one with just one musician and where did you come up with that definition for "jazz"? Jazz History 101, back in College. Yes, you can have a stale track with a group of musicians. But once again, the essence of Jazz is improvisation. And when you record a track on your own, playing all instruments, you limit down improvisation - unless you can play at least four instruments simultaneously (even then it would be boring because the song would lack the creative input of multiple personalities). For that very reason you find very, very few Jazz albums recorded by just one artist (even though many Jazz musicians are multi-instrumentalists). It takes the live out of the song. Exactly. Jazz would be useless and boring as shit without a group of other musicians. Improvisation wouldn't exist and be as powerful without those other musicians. Everybody feeds off of each other. Way to jump to conclusions!

OMG, I can't stand people talking as if jazz was invented by Diana Krall. People, what we're told as "jazz music" today on the radio, it isn't jazz at all. I don't mean Diana Krall's music is any bad, in fact, it's nice to hear it on the background while you're drinking a sweet cocktail in a refreshment stall in Copacabana...
We all should learn more about music and music history and aesthetics before talking bullshit. It's okay to share your impressions or opinions about some music even if you don't know any technical aspect, but i just can't stand when people try to insist too much in what they think it's the definitive truth, without having researched enough. Peace and be wild!

Anita's album will probably go as far as Chaka's did in 98. Don't get me wrong, I dug that album when it came out, but Prince has a little bit of a green thumb of sorts, when it comes to music he doesn't make.
