it's just classic [Edited 4/24/09 10:06am] I like the 3121 version SO much better than the NPGMC dribble. The 3121 version sold me on the song, as I hated it before, and dismissed it. The screaming, just in the mood and emotion of the song, sort of reminds me of his intensity on "The Beautiful Ones". U?

I prefer the 3121 version over the NPGMC version ( which sounds too skeletal, thin and weak compared to the 3121 version). However, the screaming is the only thing I don´t like about it. It sounds too forced, like he´s trying to emulate that "Beatiful Ones" feeling. In the past, those screams came off as a bit more heartfelt, more authentic, whereas these days, they sound like he´s trying to recapture something from the past but it´s not really the same kind of yearning and despair that oozed from songs like Something In The Water or Beautiful Ones. I remember being shocked by an otherwise nice song having sudden screaming in it. Then I went back and really paid attention to it. Somehow, it works in there. It fits the emotion and climax of the song. I never did dig the screaming in "Something In The Water". THAT one annoyed me. However, the screaming in "the Beautiful Ones" is along the lines of the guitar solo in "Gold". Both are soul searching and desperate (in a good way).

I think it's one of the best songs he's done since The Beautiful Ones, and reminds me of it too, the wistfulness, emotion, and the way it builds to the screaming passion at the end! I love the Spanish influence too... sublime...I absolutely LOVE The Dance,

Don't agree KoolEaze - that might be the case most of the time now, but I think 'The Dance' is the exception, I think it's TOTALLY heartfelt, maybe a little later on in the day heartfelt, but I believe it, and it really moves me every time I hear it, which is quite a lot because I listen to it quite a lot!

I love the 3121 version as well, but I crack up when I hear him screaming "IT'S NOT FAYA...IT'S JUST NOT FAYA!! I can picture him running after the girl, like a stark raving lunatic screaming this... I kind of wish there was a version that was sort of "in between" the first and second versions. The original is pretty bland and doesn't really catch my attention at all. I felt like the re-make from 3121 was a little over-wrought. Like he wanted a really dramatic ballad on there, but picked the wrong song to give that treatment to.

I most sincerely do think this song is awesome.
When I listen to it, it doesn't even feel like a song. It comes off a short story that is sung and has accompanying music in the background. It plays like a movie, actually It has a beginning, middle and end. And the ending is awesome. Like people said earlier, it has the same passion as what he exhibited in The Beautiful Ones. Now, I'm not really thinking so much about the comparison because we're talking about two kinds of pain. The Beautiful Ones, he was screaming about a love that was so strong that it hurt. In this song, he's screaming over losing another love and how his love life sucks, basically I listen to that song and can picture a dramatic climax when the music changes and he starts making all of these comments that end in exclamation points. I see a room that spins endlessly (or rather, Prince standing in one place while the camera circles around him). The very last second, you hear him gasp, so it almost makes the song out to be one of his nightmares. Never finding requited love. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Never finding requited love. thanks... one of these days, I ought to write down what the music video would look like according to the visuals I get when I listen to it So far, I only have the last minute done. Since he uses two different voices, its hard to figure out what each of the two personalities would do. How they would move and act. Would they fade into one another or would they appear in scenes together (with the help of today's technology)? When I find the time, I'm sure I'll come up with something interesting had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

What he did to this song on 3121 is almost a sin. It started off as a song that expressed a very appealing (and universal) vulnerability about falling love (on The Chocolate Invasion) and ended up as a bitter, overwrought diatribe against a bitch who done him wrong.
I understand why he reworked it (he was expressing a total change in feeling toward one he feel in love with). But I love the uncertainty and humanity he expressed in the earlier version. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't think the girl is a bitch.....I think the first was written during a time in which the love was new and he was telling her why he couldn't give her what she demanded at the time. Than he re-did it after a meeting with her and she didn't (at least to him) show him any signs that she cared she just stood there and didn't run after him like the others. That's why he says are you really just gonna stand there like you don't care and than he tries to get her to move by telling her he could find another like her anywhere but than he knows he can't so that is why he goes into the things he loves about her. I hope if these songs are from real life that they can be together really soon but from what I get from it sounds like she's taken and he can't understand why she won't leave and come and be by his side. I think he did a second version of it cuz it was about ANOTHER Girl who reminded him of the girl he wrote the original about ..... eye have a wild imagination

the 2nd one sounds fake I disagree. I the first one sounds more like a demo, empty and sparse in some places, where he is "mapping" out ideas for what would become the final version, which became version 2. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"
