Cinnie said: If anyone has read Per Nilsen's book DMSR, they know when songs for The Family were recorded. Why would you be surprised that the songs were recorded in 1984 if the album came out in 1985?
It's my favorite side project. I think I remember reading "River Run Dry" had a bassline which was muted after the success of the bass-less "When Doves Cry". The whole Family sound sounds like a precursor to Parade, that doesn't mean it was recorded one month prior to Parade and after ATWIAD though. But really, it's "Mutiny" and "High Fashion" that had the bass muted. The full-on bass versions have leaked. I think I still have them somewhere. Bobby'z "River Run Dry" wasn't one of those, I think. I am glad that NC2U was scaled back, compared to the fuller version St. Paul released a few years ago on his site. I could deal with the tick tock ,but the rest seemed over done.

I love this era. This was the time when my mom got me my first Prince album, Parade of course. I thought it was weird but I liked it then. Now it's myabsolute favorite Prince album ever. Ahhh to be 7 years old again. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

[Edited 4/29/09 11:28am] "Kiss" is a 1986 song by Prince and the Revolution, from the album Parade. Kiss started as a short acoustic demo, about a minute in length, with one verse and the chorus. Prince gave the song to the funk band Mazarati for their debut album. Mazarati and producer David Z. drastically reworked the song, giving it its unique raw funk and oddly effective stripped-down minimalist sound. When Mazarati delivered the song to Prince, he was amazed at their work and decided to take back the song for himself. He replaced their lead vocal, added the guitar break in the chorus and edited the song to its present form. Mazarati were credited for their backing vocals, which Prince left intact. He added the song at the last minute to Parade. Despite Warner Bros. not wanting to release it as a single, Kiss became Prince's third number-one U.S. hit following 1984's highly successful "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy". It was also a big hit across the Atlantic, reaching #6 on the UK Singles Chart. The song won Prince another Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, and was nominated for Best R&B Song. [1] The song has become a staple at Prince's concerts and is usually sung partially by the audience. The 12" single of the song is an extension of the album track. The extended section is based on the funky guitar line and contains much fuller instrumentation than the main track, including bass, keys and horns. New lyrics are present from Prince with Jill Jones that ends with a humorous dialogue between a wife and her husband watching Prince on television. The B-side of Kiss was the funky "¢¾ or $" ("Love or Money"), sung in a processed, higher-pitched vocal, which Prince would later use for his Camille material. The song relates to the theme in Under the Cherry Moon and a bit of the song was heard in the film, as was a bit of the extended version of Kiss. The extended Kiss was included on 2006's Ultimate but "¢¾ or $" has oddly never been re-released. Kiss Uh! U don't have 2 be beautiful 2 turn me on I just need your body, baby, from dusk till dawn U don't need experience 2 turn me out U just leave it all up 2 me, I'm gonna show U what it's all about CHORUS: U don't have 2 be rich 2 be my girl U don't have 2 be cool 2 rule my world Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with I just want your extra time and your... kiss U got 2 not talk dirty, baby, if U wanna impress me U can't be 2 flirty, mama, I know how 2 undress me (Yeah) I want 2 be your fantasy, maybe U could be mine U just leave it all up 2 me, we could have a good time CHORUS Yes, oh I think I wanna dance, uh Gotta, gotta, oh Little Girl Wendy's Parade Gotta, gotta, gotta Women, not girls, rule my world, I said they rule my world Act your age, mama, not your shoe size, maybe we could do the twirl U don't have 2 watch Dynasty 2 have an attitude, uh U just leave it all up 2 me, my love will be your food (Yeah) U don't have 2 be rich 2 be my girl U don't have 2 be cool 2 rule my world Ain't no particular sign I'm compatible with! I saw Mazarati live at The Palace in Hollywood and as a band, they were great. Sir Casey's vocals were too weak to pull of live though. They didn't even play my favorite song of their's..Strawberry Lover. I ADORED the Mazarati album. I played that album 30 times more than I did Parade. To this day, I think the Mazarati album was one of the best things to come out of Paisley Park. MarkBrown did a great job on that album. Another great album was The Family. Excellent lyrics from P. High Fashion and Mutiny, which originally were written for The Time's Ice Cream Castle, but once P saw that Morris and Jesse were bouncing, he held the songs back and came up with The Family instead. Screams of Passion should have been a bigger hit.
Like Sheila's A Love Bizzare, which was basically a duet between Sheila and P. P had total dominence on r&b radio with his and his artist's material...Kiss, Mountains, Sister's Fate, Player's Ball, A Love Bizzare, Screams of Passion, 100 M.P.H., all got heavy rotation. I liked Sheila's band image from Romance 1600 and Mazarati's black rock image. As much as I love The Family's album, their image wasn't as happening. Paul and Wendy's twin sister as lead vocalists weren't clicking. And Jerome and Jellybean weren't strong enough to save it. Eric on bass, although it wasn't his instrument, had a natural pressence which was cool. But the band's image looked very thrown together. "Here, u do this and oh, u do that. There it is...Yeah, that'll work!". I have to disagree with you about the Family image, as well as the Mazarati album. I will give you that the Family as a project seems hastily arranged, but as far as the look, it's more of the Sly/Family Stone angle that he was going for. As for the Mazarati album, Strawberry Lover is my favorite song from that album, and She's Just That Kind Of Lady and Stroke are close seconds, but overall, the reason I never really listened to that album outside of when I first got it is because to me, there just seemed to be a hollowness to the album, either because it would have benefitted more if Prince had had more input or something. Now if it's your assertion that Mazarati is just like the Family, and Prince contributed much more, just as he did with the Family, then I'd agree with you. One thing I do know is that when these albums came out, I was a willing sponge for anything that had the label Paisley Park on it, and I soaked these albums up with the quickness (teenagers have that ability, tho.) So it probably didn't matter if it wasn't the best quality, as was the case with the non-Prince-involved Good Question, but I still ate it up until Batman came out.

U think that The Family's image was like Sly and the Family Stone? Visually? How do u figure that? It's not because both bands has the word "Family" in it is it? And I never stated that Mazarati was ANYTHING like The Family. Both were good albums as I stated, but they were entirely different bags. P was very much involved with the Mazarati album. He wrote 100 MPH and the music to Strawberry Lover with Mark. That song was initially titled "Fear of the Shadow" (shadow was Mark's nickname given to him by Prince) but P re-wrote the lyrics to that coming up with Strawberry Lover. Mark took the riff and theme in lyrics from Extra Loveable. P just re- worked the song. Besides that, P and Mark played all of the instruments on the album and Sir Casey did the vocals. Jill Jones did backing vocals on I Guess It's All Over and Strawberry Lover. [Edited 4/29/09 23:23pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
