Nice thread....I have great memories from this time. Although I wasn't a fan of the Parade album as a whole...I really dug the tracks Christopher Tracy's Parade, the 12' of Kiss, the 12' of Mountains and I liked the b-sides Alexis and Love and Money. Slow that down from 45 to 33 and u got a straight up Sly Stone jam. I saw P live at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on the Hit N Run show and they were sho' nuff bangin'. Although I hated when P cut his hair short, the band's image overall was really cool. I dug P's black spanish hat, ala Hendrix. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Word was at that time was that P was going to do a full scale tour with Sheila and Mazarati as opening acts. That would have been cool. I saw Mazarati live at The Palace in Hollywood and as a band, they were great. Sir Casey's vocals were too weak to pull of live though. They didn't even play my favorite song of their's..Strawberry Lover. I ADORED the Mazarati album. I played that album 30 times more than I did Parade. To this day, I think the Mazarati album was one of the best things to come out of Paisley Park. MarkBrown did a great job on that album. Another great album was The Family. Excellent lyrics from P. High Fashion and Mutiny, which originally were written for The Time's Ice Cream Castle, but once P saw that Morris and Jesse were bouncing, he held the songs back and came up with The Family instead. Screams of Passion should have been a bigger hit. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Like Sheila's A Love Bizzare, which was basically a duet between Sheila and P. P had total dominence on r&b radio with his and his artist's material...Kiss, Mountains, Sister's Fate, Player's Ball, A Love Bizzare, Screams of Passion, 100 M.P.H., all got heavy rotation. I liked Sheila's band image from Romance 1600 and Mazarati's black rock image. As much as I love The Family's album, their image wasn't as happening. Paul and Wendy's twin sister as lead vocalists weren't clicking. And Jerome and Jellybean weren't strong enough to save it. Eric on bass, although it wasn't his instrument, had a natural pressence which was cool. But the band's image looked very thrown together. "Here, u do this and oh, u do that. There it is...Yeah, that'll work!". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

The music was being developed as early as PR but the band wasn't assembled till ATWIAD: 1/2 the member of the Family were from the Time:Jerome, Jellybean, St Paul the Parade album/movie was being developed/worked at the same time of the release of ATWIAD, so much was happening at that time. From my understanding the Family album Mazarati and the Sheila E album were 2 be released in connection with Parade, the Family was recording and rehearsing while Prince was in France shooting the UTCM movie. I liked how the Family had Prince & the Revolutions paisley & silk pajamas look from Parade Prince was always recording the next album, while promoting the previous. The family album was mostly recorded in the PR era and released in the AWIAD era, Not Parade. The album was not going to be part of a Parade release with Mazarati and Sheila because it was already released the year before along with Sheila's. It was recorded on the back of the Purple Rain tour with Sheila's Album. Parade and Mazarati were recorded a lot later. Nothing Compares 2 U and River Run Dry (Bobby Z's song) were recorded in 85. The late 85 rehearsing you are refering to was The Family preparing for their live debut. The family were over before Parade hit town. .

The Family album was recorded between June 84 and completed in October 84. Bobby Z's song "River Run Dry" was actually recorded in June 84. P always recorded different albums for different projects at the same time. During the same sessions for The Family album between June & October 84, P was recording tracks for ATWIAD. Further back than that, "When Doves Cry" was recorded on March 1, 84. The song "Paisley Park" was recorded on March 9, 1984. "Temptation" was recorded in either April or May 84. Recording for the Parade album started as early as April 85. Most of Parade was recorded in April 85. The PR tour had just ended in April as well. This is all documented in Per Nilsen's book "DMSR". Recording for the Parade album started as early as April 85. Most of Parade was recorded in April 85. The PR tour had just ended in April as well. This is all documented in Per Nilsen's book "DMSR". So to put perspective on how much ahead P was with his material, P was already looking ahead and knowing what he was going to do AFTER the Purple Rain album WHILE he was still recording the Purple Rain album. While many artists during that period would record an album and then tour off that album, they wouldn't even start thinking about writting material for their next album untill awhile after they got home from being on the road. During this period, Prince would not only record his NEXT album before he went out on tour but would record another project's album at the same time. THEN record an entirely different project's album while he's on tour. And then as soon as he got off tour, in the same month, he's completing another NEW album of his. Granted, most of the songs are documented as far as the dates of the recording sessions. But there is no telling when P actually wrote all of these songs BEFORE he actually went into the studio to cut them. Point is, the cat was writing his ass off. His mutltiple recordings for his and other acts material dates back to the completion of The Time's first album in April 81. BEFORE his European tour for Dirty Mind. From Jan 82, (while still on the Controversy tour) to Aug 82, P completed all 3 albums for Vanity 6, What Time Is It? and 1999. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

The family album was recorded in the Purple Rain era and released in the ATWIAD era.
. Not true at all. Around the World in a day was mostly recorded during the Purple Rain tour in 1984 and early 1985. The Family album was part of a new phase, later on in 1985.

Most of the Around The World In A Day material was recorded before the Purple Rain tour. Prince recorded "Raspberry Beret" in April 1982, Prince recorded "Temptation", "Pop Life", and "Paisley Park" in March 1984. Prince recorded "America" on July 23rd 1984. Prince recorded "Tambourine" in September 1984. Prince recorded "Condition of the Heart" on October 9th 1984. The Purple Rain tour started on November 4th 1984. Prince recorded "The Ladder" on December 23rd 1984. David Coleman (Revolution member Lisa Coleman's brother) recorded "Around The World In A Day" in January 1985 with Oriental instruments and Prince heard it and wanted to use the song on his new album and Prince added to it. Prince gave his father songwriting credit on "Around The World In A Day" and "The Ladder". It was a way to help his father out financially. The Family album was part of a new phase, later on in 1985.
Not true at all. Prince recorded "Desire", "High Fashion", "Mutiny", "Yes", "Susannah's Pajamas" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" in June 1984. Eric Leeds recorded saxophone overdubs on the Family songs in July 1984 and Prince sent "River Run Dry" to Clare Fischer for strings in July 1984. Prince recorded "The Screams of Passion" on August 19th 1984. Goodnight, sweet Prince.

If anyone has read Per Nilsen's book DMSR, they know when songs for The Family were recorded. Why would you be surprised that the songs were recorded in 1984 if the album came out in 1985?
It's my favorite side project. I think I remember reading "River Run Dry" had a bassline which was muted after the success of the bass-less "When Doves Cry". The whole Family sound sounds like a precursor to Parade, that doesn't mean it was recorded one month prior to Parade and after ATWIAD though.
