MPLsound: Is Prince trying to be trendy? Hasn't he always? A huge point of contention with some orgers about MPLsound is that they think Prince is trying too hard to be "current" and sound like the Neptunes or whatever. Usually, this argument is thrown at every new Prince album. I think it's the opposite. It the minimalist synthed out electro funk (Minneapolis Sound) that Prince helped pioneer is really in vogue right now in pop music..and Prince is just doing his thing as usual. For the sake of argument, let's say that Prince was biting today's current producing sounds/trends. Does that make MPLsound worse? The album Diamonds & Pearls is an alltime Prince classic. Yet it has Tony M. jugheading trends of the early 90's left and right. To me, the whole gangster glam era is much more bandwagoneering than any thing Prince has done since. Even New Power Soul seems much more naturally Prince than something like "Push" or "Jughead". Furthermore, couldn't the claim of Prince trying to be trendy be leveled at him since his first album? Could it be leveled at (blasphemy) Dirty Mind? "New Power slide...."

funny thing is Neptunes, Bassment JAxx, OUTKAST etc. have had a deep admiration for Prince's many styles so for Prince to come back and pay them respect by "sorta sounding like them" or just being current and showing he can still record song styles there level is gracious and IMO just plain cool. If anything, I think the above is quite true. I don't listen to many of the artists that Prince is now, often, accused of copying but MPLSoUND certainly sounds like Prince to me. ...and unlike previous albums like Musicology or 3121 I don't get the impression he's trying to mimic old classics, this is just his core sound - yet updated.

I agree totally. I made a similar point in the 'Here' thread. That song, to me, is classic yet updated Prince. It highlights prince 'doing his thing' and gives a unique touch to a much-copied sound.
