"Nothing Compares 2 U" on BBC1 (UK) tonight

Hello All,

Tonight (Friday) at 8.30 p.m. in the UK on BBC1 there is, I think, going to be a version of Nothing Compares 2 U.

This will be on the programme Fame Academy and it will be sung by the contestant Lemar.

Lemar has a God-given voice--a full range, and amazing expression in it. In fact, ATM, the only person I can think of who could give him a run for his money voice-wise is, ahem, Prince.

His version, if he is singing it, should be worth watching.

It's funny but I was day dreaming about what songs I would sing if I was on fame academy and NC2U was one of them. I also wondered why they never covered any Prince songs. Should be interesting if they do do it.

They might mention Prince as well as Sinead O'Connor. After all, they have a songwriter/teacher on the show who no doubt is well aware of the song's origin and, I am sure, Prince's songwriting talent.

My guess is he'll get a mention. I like the way Sinead O'Connor herself thanked Prince when she won the award for best song of the year: "a truly, truly beautiful song" she said.

Lemar ain't that good, he is just the same old Craig David exploitable voice you hear all the time on Radio these days. Forced tremolo butchering of "Nothing Compares To You" coming up. I caught a glimpse of a practice last night and it sounded pretty bad!

IMHO, yes. That's not to say that he won't be exploited--anything is possible in this crazy world.

Lionel Richie heard him and specifically wanted to duet with him. Song wise, he has also not been caught up into doing stereotypical songs that might seem right for his image--he has done versatile numbers up to now.

More like Lionel Richie used the TV show as a personal career booster.

I like Lemar's voice but he didn't even know Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry About A Thing". Never heard Innervsions but plays the soul man act onstage?

In his rehearsal he tampered with NC2U also and added uninspired cliched lines of his own... bad sign.

Chasing

He murdered the song, such contrived passion...it was rubbish...you don't sing that song in a soulful husky way, a la an attempt at an Al Green type-effect.

I have heard very few able to cover a Prince song effectively, no way these tossers who think they will be superstars. This guy has a good voice, compared to the other shite on that programme. Manufactured pop nonsense, fame is all they want, well fame don't last and these mugs won't last so long!

This guy makes out he is a soulman, he doesn't know nothing, he just screws up his face when he sings, like he's having a dump. Someone fluch the toilet, the guy is crap!

Don't count on an acknowledging that it's Prince's song... I just watched a similar show called Fame factory where that one guy sang Kiss, and the teacher said he was doing a Tom Jones tune... The ignorance... sigh
