What happened to artists that could actually speak in complete sentences??? I get embarrassed when I see interviews with some of these younger artists.

soundscan was implemented in 1991. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

Looks like he still hasn't got over how WB treated him and I'm sure WB did cook the books. Whoever is in charge of the cookie jar will probably eat some of cookies when nobody is looking.
Love the line "We are conducting an audit" lol, I'm sure WB doesn't like that one bit, but artists have to be ballsy and make sure the are not being taken advantage of, younger lesser known artist probably couldn't get away with such a move so more power to him.

he made this point better during a tv interview in the '90s when he explained that a lot of mom and pop stores didn't have the equipment setup to scan barcodes and thus couldn't participate in soundscan. since a lot of black music was purchased at smaller retailers, that meant a lot of copies of black musicians' records were not counted by soundscan.
today there are hardly any small retailers so the complaint is less relevant. prince's latest album set was sold by one retailer, and presumably they know exactly how many copies they've sold (if only for inventory control purposes). the conspiracy wrt to prince's failure to hit #1 on the hot 200 is easy to expose or debunk, in this case. prince is certainly right that record companies (as well as movie companies and book publishing companies) have, and continue to, fudge their numbers, especially wrt overseas sales. i have heard this same story from people i know in the publishing industry. at some point they discovered that their work was being sold in other countries. of course, they had never been compensated, or even informed, that this was going on. i definitely agree that no one knows how many copies of 'purple rain' were sold. this is necessarily true of every album released prior to the advent of soundscan. soundscan was the first universal, automated system for tracking sales. the prior methods were entirely unreliable. even if we stipulate that everyone is honest (which obviously, they aren't), an accounting of total sales of 'purple rain' prior to 1991 could only ever be a best guess. the only thing we know for sure is that the total number of copies sold cannot exceed the total number of copies manufactured. even then, it's quite likely that more copies were manufactured (particularly for overseas sales) than anyone is willing to admit. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

I remember it being in the news. A lot of chains like Sam Goody and Camelot Music actually advertised in store that they were now part of Soundscan. It's still a fractured system though. Good idea, but it got butt raped like any other good system, by someone who wants to control everything. And it ain't Prince.
