Isnt great pop always superficial and plastic? I stopped reading after trying to sound like the Black eyed Peas or the Neptunes.

Fool: Those bands are trying to sound like Prince

I don't know if it's overrated on The Org or not, but I actually just got around to listening to it up close about a week ago, and I think MPLSound is AMAZING! LOL. I haven't read through to get the full gist of this thread yet, but from the sound of the title I'm guessing others are finding this album amazing as well. I really can't get over "Ol Skool Company". I even saw him perform it first on Leno, but it really hits home on the CD. Though I actually really like every cut on this CD, and that hasn't happened for me in a while.

I mean, give me a break:

This album is as superficial and plastic as can be: Prince is making a fool of himself, by trying to copying the likes of the Black Eyed Peas and the Neptunes, and failing immensely.
In terms of songwriting and compositions it is as worse as New Power Soul.

He uses the linn-drum, he uses those cheap sounding synths, but he simply doesnt use them in a brilliant way as he did in the eighties: big difference.

MPLSound is an annoying, opportunistic, cheap 'album'. Anyone with some selfrespect should avoid it.

2/3 out of 10. Nothing more.

chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

I don't know about you, but the first two tracks of MPLS sound oddly current, don't you think? You hear those artists using the same techniques, but it doesnt necessarily mean one is copying the other lol and if so, it wasn't intentional. It's just what's "in" right now shrug

What I got from the album was the first two tracks sounded like an attempt to fit to the mainstream sound.
Then the ballads sounded like R&B tracks you'd hear on the radio, but there are bits and pieces of that purple essence that sets them apart. It might sound strange, but in a way, that reminds me of what he did on Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic and people were up in arms because some of his R&B tracks didn't sound unique to his sound.

Then there's "Future Baby Mama" and "Mr. Good-night" from Planet Earth that people called out for the same reasons. They sound like typical R&B that any other artists could put out.
I fell victim for the 2nd song in particular wink inner fantasies galore cool

As a side-note, though, you can choose to ignore all of this and not take me seriously because I haven't attempted to listen to MPLS since last Saturday lol
hmmm in fact, I'm getting curious about it right now. Maybe later, I'll try again and I'll get back yous guys.

Personally, I really like the album.

I don't care for the ballads, but I think it's a great contrasting album to lotusflow3r. His best double-release in a long long time.

Yes. It's over rated. It's the same gentle hysteria that people feel when a new album comes out, but in a year's time, there'll barely be 25% of the worshipers still groovin' to it.

You've made a nearly identical post to this before:

http://prince.org/msg/7/302711?&pg=1

We get it. You don't like Mplsound, and you're just pompus enough to think that your opinions matter more than others, that you alone understand what it's like to be a true Prince fan, that anyone who likes Mplsound doesn't "get Prince".

Pathetic.

I don't mean to cross post, but I think my response in the positive MPLSound thread is better placed here. Here is my view on the album....

In February, every bone of my body said that Lotusflow3r would be the "proper" new album, and MPLSound would be a throwaway nostalgic trip.

Much as I became a fan in the 80’s, and that I think it was P’s creative peak, I have no desire for him to go backwards in his sound. I always want him to invent, not reinvent.

Couple that with the fact that I have always preferred Prince’s "rockier" side, in theory, for me anyway; it should be a one horse race. Lotusflow3r should have been my album of the year.

But.....

I have found Lotusflow3r to be nothing more than an unfocused homage to Hendrix, Santana and Led Zeppelin. It has some good tracks, but its Prince’s least focused album to date. It sounds thrown together, and uninspiring.

MPLSound however has really surprised me. Instead of it sounding like a retro homage to himself, it feels like Prince has embraced what made him, and ran with it. Yes it retro, but it doesn’t sound old. Yes its old school, but its fresh.

If I could sum it up best, it would be on one point. The guitar solos in MPLSound are fresh and exciting. Yet the solo’s on the "rock" album of lotusflow3r do nothing more than continue the NPGMC 70’s vibe.

Prince has clearly borrowed from both the 70’s and 80’s here, but it’s his reinterpretation of the MPLsound that keeps spinning in the car, and revealing new things every day. A real surprise, but a great little gem of an album.

I'd say that about sums it up. I seem to recall the advance buzz on this album was that it was a "gift" to fans that recalled the classic days, but linn-drum aside, these plodding, largely tuneless synth grooves sound like stale hip-hop leftovers from at least a decade after his early classic years.
I hate this one as much as I love LotusFlow3r, which I'm grateful for.

The one caveat to the above is "No Candy 4 U", which is so good it merits a star on its own. I've swapped it with "Feel Good Feel Better Feel Wonderful" from Lotusflow3r, which should have been on MPLSound, as it too is perfectly awful.

I don't see the big deal. People get over albums, they will play them less etc, if Prince releases something new, they will think the new stuff is so much better, nothing wrong with that.

Would it be better if most members here would be whining that MPLSoUND is his worst ever and he should retire? I'd rather have fans caught up in the "new album hysteria"...

Nope. Don't think it is over-rated at all. Been listening to Prince for longer than I can remember and love 'MPLSound'. For me, it does recall his eighties work, albeit with a slightly contemporary twist.

Black Eyed Peas? I cannot see the comparison. Neptunes? Their production aped Prince's in the first place. They've even copied drum patterns from him (i.e 'Slave 4 U' Britney Spears).

Also, yours, like mine, is also just an opinion, not a final conclusive judgment.
