TheEnglishGent said: Who was hyping it as Jimi like? Was it Prince? I don't remember reading anything where he promised us a rock album. If you built your expectations based on reviews and the early leaked tracks, then you should really know better after all these years! There was no way that the entire album was going to be slamming guitar. It's a shame but not a surprise.
I built my expectations on Prince's own words. There was a two-part article in the LA Times, I believe, where Prince, and the reporter, talked about how this album was an homage to the guitar, and he wanted to go back to the guitar, and how his rock side was exposed and celebrated on the album. It was "the guitar album" everyone wanted from him. So yes, HE promoted it that way. The same way he promoted MPLSound as being "his old self". Prince took the reporter on a ride in his car, played music. Took her in the house, and played music. Took her elsewhere and played music, all the while talking about how one album was THIS and one album was THAT, etc. Prince words bite him in the ass once again. Although I can't really call it a lie, because Prince BELIEVES what he says about the albums, whereas a broken promise or a lie is more like any of his past aborted projects (Sampler series, giving music away for free, CB 2, etc etc etc).

the quote i remember is that "prince has found the purple rain sound again." it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die
