A lyric quote would have helped.

But I assume you're talking about:

RADIO USED 2 B LOCAL UNTOUCHED BY THE MAN
SONGS WE USED 2 SING USED 2 MEAN SOMETHING
NOW THEY JUST BLAND LIKE THE DRUMMER
WHERE’S THE REAL DRUMMER? MICHAEL B.

MINT CONDITION, MORRIS DAY
JELLYBEAN WISHIN’ SHEILA E AND BROTHER JOHN, SOMETIMES ME
‘TIL DAWN

Why does it have to be about Z? What about Blackwell who constantly started songs off wrong, missed his cues, and couldn't operate a drum pad to save his life?

It's no diss. Bland worked with him a lot on LotusFlower as a drummer, (as did Sonny Thompson). That's probably why he got a nod in the song.

lol Yeah Bobby is so successful in his solo drumming career Prince felt threatened and decided to diss Booby indirectly by not even mentioning him in Ol Skool Company but mentioning Sheila Michael and even himself.

He's not dissin' Bobby Z in that song. If he is at all, it's just by NOT mentioning him. But he can't sit there and name EVERY drummer. Well, he could, but that would take too long...

If anything I thought it was slightly fucked up to say "Bland" as in the word definition meaning "lame or boring".

Of course he didn't mean it about Michael B. He was just rhymin.

But...

What I'm trying to say is... umm... he's kinda assigning a meaning to Michael Bland's family name...

Like if my last name was Dick.

And the lyric was:

"You can suck my Dick. Just like Bernie."

Naw mean?

If by not mentioning Bobby Z is a diss at the man then he is dissing Cora as well.
He could make it up with a new song,Eh!"My Drummers","Give Us A Beat,Man(& Girl)" either way Bobby should sue, like everything in America if you notice a slip the the court is the only answer.
But may-be, just may-be, Bobby and Cora just didn't fit THIS TIME

No diss to Bobby, but why is Jellybean wishin'? Is Jellybean wishin' he a real drummer?

And about Blackwell. Did he really make much mistakes with songs? I haven't heard any. I saw him at an aftershow where he did a solo in which he played the drumparts to a lot of old Prince songs. He had P crackin' up! I never heard him miss a beat.

no evidence, but I suspect prince and morris were the only drummers on the Time albums (jellybean was the live drummer), so he was "wishin'" to play on the studio tracks. ???

Didn't Bobby Z play mainly drum machine patterns???

it's a diss by admission.

Bland (drummers on the radio) leads into Michael Bland via Prince's witty wordplay. neutral

More to the point when was radio "untouched by the man"? He doesn't half harp on about some golden era that never existed.

bobby z didnt play drum machine patterns
from 1979 untill 1982(starting with 1999 tour) bobby z played live drums.

he played live drums on parade tour with addition of electronic
percussions.
if you listen to atlanta 1980 boot you gonna hear
that bobby was great in the pocket drummer.
he didnt have a flashy style but for what prince was doing at the time bobby z was great.
and while his drumming style was simple it had something "princley" in it.
if you wanna judge bobby z listen to atlanta 1980 boot and we can talk
lol

No Bobby played both, Prince brought in the drum machine patterns to the live shows around 1999 (Sheila played the drum machine patterns too and because Sheila would be upfront with Prince (playing the percussion) sometimes they just rocked to a programmed drum pattern (like they did during Strange Relationships)

OK let's clear the air, it is a diss 2 some degree. Bobby Z. went 2 Paisley Park sometime between 2000-02 & when he finally saw Prince face to face him & Larry Graham were bashing Lisa & Wendy's supposedly homosexuality. This started after there was some talk of a Revolution reunion-tour during the encounter between the three. Prince supposedly said that there would be no reunion as he did not approve of they're lifestyle & they would have to hold a press conference apologizng for they supposedly gay lifestyle. Bobby Z. sat pissed-off & left Paisley Park & allegedly stated he didn't care if he never saw Prince again. CHECK Per Neilson's book "Possesed The Rise & Fall of Prince" it's in there. So yes he was most likely not mentioned because of that encounter & his later quote in the book.

Just to be clear. The diss is his absence from the list of "real" drummers (which includes Michael B.(land).

Mint Condition????? WTF?

I thought Brother John is John Blackwell. Maybe not.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
