sure, when he's on a label the labels can sometimes secure him reasonable coverage. i'm just saying it doesn't surprise me when ew slams prince. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

I agree with that. I don't see how anyone can say this is the album they have been "waiting for" MPLSSOUND just sounds like Prince trying too hard to be Prince

Thanks to everyone for chiming in on this. Remember, it was only about credibility and the bogus Pfunk reference. Still, as an EW suscriber, I feel prompted to send the following to them:
EW review How sad is it that a magazine like Entertainment Weekly gives Prince’s “LotusFlow3r” a C-? Well, I would accept it as “just an opinion” (even if I disagree), except for the fact that the person doing the reviewing is obviously unqualified. Why do I say that, you ask? Because she compares the track "4ever" to the music of Pfunk... Get a FUNKin’ clue! Note to the reviewer; you can't make a bogus reference in a comparison and expect to maintain credibility. Did you actually listen to the CDs? Do you know what Pfunk even sounds like? Do your job or stop wasting my time. I mean, this is a top entertainment magazine. You MUST do better than that if you want to be taken seriously. In the previous issue, the "Bullseye" section claimed that the 3 CD set didn't contain enough good songs for even one disc. Who is writing this stuff? Is it meant to be taken seriously, or just as mere drivel? Also, there is a consensus that believes EW will only do a positive piece on Prince if he is tied to a major label, and that his propensity for going against the grain of conventional marketing for his works draws skewed criticism. For the record, I'm not claiming this set to be brilliant. I do think that there is some really, quality music here; more than enough to make a very, very solid single disc. Of course, fans will make the level of quality presented seem inconsistent, because it is, and will always be so subjective to personal taste. Still, this note is about objectivity in a review. The reviewer doesn’t have to like the CD, but to take cheap shots, or even to lump Bria's set in with Prince's is just an easy excuse to diminish his work. And to have the audacity to put JT's name in the same review is juvenile... Remember the Super Bowl? P. already handled that guy… literally; and in front of the whole, wide world. Finally, I didn't write this note because your magazine posted a negative review about Prince. If someone has a case, and makes it, then fine. I often look forward to critical, thought-provoking commentary. However, if you’re going to give an artist (who is the caliber of Prince) a C-, then give me something intelligent to read, by someone who knows what they are talking about and can get their facts straight. Period.
