The Top 10 That Shoulda Been. Girls & Boys.
I know that Prince's choices for singles get criticized all the time, but in my opinion the failure to release "Girls & Boys" as the follow-up to "Kiss" was a huge miscalculation. "Kiss" was a gigantic smash, and he could have maintained the momentum for the "Parade" album with this amazingly commercial, funky track. I remember clearly listening to "Parade" for the first time, hearing "Girls & Boys," and thinking... wow... this is a smash. And then being shocked when "Mountains" was chosen. It's a great track, but just didn't cut it as the 2nd single. Could the "cutest ass" line have been the reason it wasn't chosen? Thoughts on this? And what other Prince tunes do you think could have been major hits had they been released as singles? Obviously another big one for me is "If I Was Your Girlfriend" as the 2nd single from SOTT... huge mistake. Brilliant song, but totally over the heads of your average Top 40 pop fan, and that choice nearly sunk the album and I think its failure was a big reason why Prince seemed to give up on promoting the record. * * *

I do believe that "Mountains," was the best choice, for a single from "Parade," following, "KISS."
With "Sign 'o' the Times," "Play in the Sunshine," and "Strange Relationship," would have been singles I think Shoulda been. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I never thought glam slam should've been released as a single from lovesexy, Ilove the song but it ain't exactly single material, but then again what songs from that album could be single material? It may be a classic in my eyes but apart from alphabet street I can't see what else could be in the charts. I wanted what was yours, now I just want u 2 care

yeah, I agree the Lovesexy (and maybe Parade) singles after the 1st ones were contractual rather than designed/destined to be singles. Warner wanted more singles from albums to extend their lifespan in the charts, but that's all changed now eh?!!! you get one 'non physical' single then the album drops like a stone and it's on to the next big thing.

IMO Mountains is a far superior song to Girls and Boys.
I'm pretty sure think this song was the follow up single to Kiss in the UK, can anyone confirm this?

Completely agree about "Girls & Boys", so ridiculous that Parade yielded only 1 Top 10 hit...

Girls and Boys was the follow up single in the UK and peaked at No. 11.

When I first heard this single on the radio I became converted so it worked for me even though it only got to No. 20 in the UK.
