Sting Like A Life 21.It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night [Edited 4/28/09 7:13am] I just recently saw the boot of this show on dvd and it was amazing. I always loved the Sign O' The Times film, but this was more real and raw. Like an aftershow. Very relaxed and you could tell he was having a blast, him and Cat dancing their asses off. His mom was in the front row and Miko bends down to hug her while waiting for Prince to come back on stage. It's too bad the first few songs are missing, but I am definitely not complaining...and Prince was looking sexy as hell, especially in the 1/2 hour encore bit. TRUE BLUE

TLM: Which are the most memorable tunes that you recorded with Prince and were released?
EL: Some of my favourite Prince songs are the songs that I had nothing to do with. There's no one Prince album that I'm going to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks. One remarkable thing about Prince is that he's probably one of the most eclectic artists in all of pop music. The songs that I find myself going back to more often are what Alan and I refer to as his "boutique songs." The greatest example to me is the "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" [on the Sign 'O' The Times album] - that's just one of my favourite Prince songs. Interestingly enough that's the song where he gave me the opportunity to go in and do a complete horn arrangement on, which he didn't use anything from. That song was just so perfect without anything else. I happen to love "Anotherloverholenyohead" from the Parade album. I love Wendy and Lisa's song, "Mountains." [also on Parade] There's a song which I don't know has ever been released. It was a song of Wendy and Lisa's and it's known by various titles [including] "Welcome To The Rat Race," but was actually called "Life Is Like Looking For A Penny In A Large Room With No Light," It was Sheila, Wendy, Lisa, Prince, myself and a couple of horns and that was one my favourite songs. I liked "Girls & Boys." [Parade]. "Strange Relationship" [Sign 'O' The Times] I absolutely love. [Edited 5/21/09 12:26pm]

Hey hey, when I was your man If I was your best friend, would U let me Take care of U and do all the things that only a best friend can? Oh, only best friends can If I was your girlfriend If I was your girlfriend If I was your girlfriend, would U let me dress U I mean, help U pick out your clothes before we go out? Not that U're helpless But sometime, sometime those are the things that bein' in love's about If I was your one and only friend Would U run 2 me if somebody hurt U even if that somebody was me? Yeah (Even if that somebody was me?) Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be ... please! If I was your girlfriend If I was your girlfriend Would U let me wash your hair? Could I make U breakfast sometime? Well then, could we just hang out I mean, could we go 2 a movie and cry 2gether? Cuz 2 me baby, that would be so fine (That would be so fine) (If I was your girlfriend) {repeat in BG} Baby, can I dress U I mean, help U pick out your clothes before we go out? Listen girl, I ain't sayin U're helpless But sometime, sometime those are the things that bein' in love's about (Shoo-do-do) {repeat in BG} Sugar, do U know what I'm saying 2 U this evening? Maybe U think I'm being a little self-centered But I, I said I wanna be all of the things U are 2 me Surely, surely U can see (If I was your girlfriend) {repeat in BG} Is it really necessary 4 me 2 go out of the room Just because U wanna undress? We don't have 2 make children 2 make love And we don't have 2 make love 2 have an orgasm Your body's what I'm all about Can I see it? I'll show U Why not? U can do it because I'm your friend I'd do it 4 U Of course I'd undress in front of U And when I'm naked, what shall I do? How can I make U see that it's cool? Can't U just trust me? If I was your girlfriend, U could Oh yeah, I think so Listen, 4 U naked I would dance a ballet Would that get U off? Tell me what will If I was your girlfriend, would U tell me? Would U let me see U naked then? Would U let me give U a bath? Would U let me tickle U so hard U'd laugh and laugh And would U, would U let me kiss U there U know, down there where it counts I'll do it so good, I swear I'll drink every ounce And then I'll hold U tight and hold U long And 2gether we'll stare into silence And we'll try 2 imagine what it looks like Yeah, we'll try 2 imagine what, what silence looks like Yeah, we'll.. we'll try 2 imagine what silence looks like Yeah, we'll try [img][/img]

Very nice thread. I remember clearly when Signs album came out. I liked the single and it got pretty good airplay out here in So. Cali. I remember when I went to buy the album the day it came out, I loved the album cover. Next to the 1999 album cover, Signs is my all time fave album cover of P's. It's a good album, very diversified. I think he wanted it to be like The Beatles "White Album" in it's versatility and different styles and moods spread across the double albums. "U Got The Look" and "Housequake" was Godzilla HUGE out here in Hollywood's dance clubs. Whenever the dj would play the 12' of these two songs, people fucking knocked chairs and tables over to get to the dancefloor. It would be so crowded u could barely move, let alone dance! This album always reminds me of when I first met Rain Pryor, (Richard's daughter and who I dated on and off for awhile when she was still into guys)."Adore" to me, is not only one of the best songs P has EVER recorded but it's one of the greatest ballads easily in the past 30 years.

[Edited 5/29/09 22:03pm] I always wished P had toured the states with this album. i think that would have sent him all the way back to the status that he had with Purple Rain. It would have shut up all of the critics that destroyed the UTCM film and it would have given him back his street cred that he had lost some from when he was doing ATWIAD. His b-sides as usual in the 80's rivaled his material that were on his albums. "Shockadelica" is in my Favorite Top 10 songs of All Time by Prince. I loved that band line-up. The Signs film was huge, at least out here in So.Cali. When it opened, the first weekend, all of the shows from the afternoon to midnight shows were sold out. The film is great because of P's performances. As many times that I had actually seen P live in concert, I was STILL blown away from some of the things he did while on stage. The man is one of the best stage performers to EVER live. Period. Personally, I was happy as a muthafucka that he was wearing his hair long again. Cat and Sheila, the new Lisa and Wendy, were fine as well. LOVED Sheila's half body suit. DAMN! she looked good in that shit. P during this period as well as Lovesexy looked happy as hell to be doing what he was doing. That he was STILL able to crank out The Black Album is a true testament to the man's talent and will. P looked cool as hell in that hat. Out here in L.A., that became the thing for all of the hardcore P fans. I and all the rude boys and rude girls all started wearing jean jackets with the collar flipped up and we all had a variation of designs on the jacket. Be it a leopard skin back, like I wore, or a black heart sewed in the front, or peach and black ribbon stitched in, we were wearing it. Oh yeah and the peace sign earrings. For me, it was the black spanish wide brim hat that P started with during Parade. Then I had to get a white one like Sheila was wearing. So then of course, I tied it so it could hang behind on my neck and back. We wore all of this going to the dance clubs. P was still VERY popular in 87.
